  • You can tie down two kayaks with just the included hardware/straps!! Great Product!
Have only Used it once but it performed very well. we used it to haul two 10' sit in kayaks about 115 miles in extremely windy conditions driving at 70 mph speeds and they didn't budge an inch. One thing to note is that as others have mentioned, getting it rigged the first time takes a bit of trial and error, but once you get a process down it can be done in 10 min (we practiced). I am very pleased with this product so far but the real test will be our vacation this summer. we will need to travel about 1000 miles with both kayaks on our roof. I will try to remember to update this after that trip. Our process for securing two kayaks with only the included hardware was as follows (two people): 1. Attached the Stacker to the roof rack of the car (we have a dodge caliber) 2. Lift up the first kayak and set in place with the hull against the Stacker and have one person hold. 3. The second person threads the first tie-down strap over the first kayak, through the top opening of the Stacker, and then lay the extra back over the first kayak. 4. Repeat for the second strap. 5. The Second person the lifts the second kayak up and places the hull against the Stacker. 6. The first person then throws the first strap over to the second person. 7. The second person then passes the strap under both kayaks and the roof rack back to the first person. 8. The first person the cinches down that strap snugly 9. Repeat steps 6-8 for the second strap. 10. find a secure place under the front of the vehicle to hook the bow line and hook it on. NOTE: since our vehicle is smaller we were able to tie down the front and rear of the kayak using only the included blue bow/stern ropes. 11. Run the other end of the rope through the handle of the first kayak, and then the second, 12. tie a butterfly knot about a foot down from the first kayak handle. 13. run the loose end of the rope through the carabiner/tightening wheel 14. hook the carabiner to the loop of the butterfly knot -> http://www.netknots.com/rope_knots/butterfly-knot/ 15. tighten the rope until there is no slack but do not over tighten. 16. repeat steps 10-15 for the rear tie-down. 17. tighten bow & stern ropes all the way down evenly. 18. tie off the loose ends of the ropes to a point so there is no slack to flap in the breeze and fray the line. 19. fold up the extra length from the tie-down straps in the middle and slide under the taught section to hold it secure. 20. drive for about 30 min, and then stop and double check everything is still tight. I did notice a bit of loosening after the first 30min, but once i tightened them down they were tight all the way home in the high winds. hope this info helps, ... show more

  • Works great
This stacker works great for carrying our 2 kayaks around. I use it with INNO Stops to make it more effective/ easier to load. When you’re not using them they fold out of the way. I use a Master Cable Lock to secure them on my car.

  • It’s just ok
I was really excited to upgrade to a better kayak roof rack. I have other Thule products and they are great but I wasn't very impressed by this stacker system. Its extremely difficult to get the kayaks up on there because there’s nothing that keeps them from falling off.. you gotta strap it down right away. Tough to do especially by yourself. Also I guess I didnt read the fine print… but there is only enough straps to get one kayak up there. That was disappointing because I only found this out right as I was trying to use this for the first time. It made it so I couldnt use the stacker at all because we have 2 kayaks. It also felt like Thule was trying to squeeze more money out of me. Ways to make this product better.. 1. Really hard to attach the straps.. I had a really difficult time. They need a system where the straps are built in. 2. Make it come with enough straps for 2 kayaks.. this seems like a no brainer.. whose out there kayaking by themselves?? 3. It needs a lock.. perhaps something that could be added with built in straps? You can do better Thule!! please make a better version of this! ... show more

  • Pretty fair carrier
This is my first Thule product after having used Yakima racks for bikes, kayaks, and a canoe for over twenty years. Yakima makes fine stuff, but as you would expect from a system based on round bars there is sometimes a rotational component when various forces act on the load. This can be overcome, but sometimes requires tightening the hardware to a point you worry about stress damage. From a hardware standpoint, the thule square bars make a lot more sense. I purchased the stacker 830 for various reasons, but it supposedly worked well with Yakima bars as well as factory racks. It attached to Yakima without a problem. In the world of guys trying to tie things onto the car top, I would say I'm about average. I have never (yet) had anything come flying off but its been close. The thule is probably fine for smaller kayaks, but one of mine is an old Torrent(a large, wide boat-- great for kids) and I had trouble keeping it from leaning. I tried several configurations before I found one seemed to work and eventually it leaned also. I finally just accepted it and stopped worrying. Failure to tighten the straps enough was not the problem. I found myself at a gas station standing on the roof on my SUV pulling with both hands. I don't think it could have been tighter. The front and back tie downs are great and the system works reasonably well, but if I had to do it again I would probably go with two J-Shaped rigs. ... show more

  • This product does what I want it to. I'm happy with it.
I researched several methods to carry my kayaks (on top of a Nissan Frontier) and this one seemed the best choice for the money. It comes with two tie down straps which are plenty long & would probably go around two slim boats but I ended up buying two more straps for about $25 additional, and use two straps per boat. I like these straps much better than the ratchet types. They have a rubber buckle protector which is handy if you're tossing the end over a kayak, and the buckles hold tight. They also come with fore and aft lines and a pair of handy loop straps. The Stacker units mount in minutes and fold down flat when not in use. I have Thule roof racks so they're designed for the Stackers but they come with mounting adapters for other types of racks, too. I think they're most reasonably used for two kayaks. I guess you could put 4 together but it would take a few extra helping hands. Thule makes quality products and I'm happy & satified with the purchase.. ... show more
