  • Excellent budget friendly for the weekend warrior
Size: Single Flaring & Swaging Tool
I think it’s important to realize that this is $40 and not $150+. I have used a flaring tool exactly twice now and I will be surprised if I use it more than two more times in my lifetime. It’s very infrequent so I didn’t mind getting a cheaper tool. The reason I bought it instead of bumming one off of someone I know is because the cutter still works on copper water lines too so I’m sure to find more use out of it. The reason I got this is I did my own mini split install in my shop. The line set it came with was 15’ and I only needed about 6’. So I cut the two lines and flared them with this tool. The thing I thought was awesome was the attachment I’m holding in the picturing. If you are too aggressive with your cutter you can accidentally fold in the edge of the line making it hard to do a clean flare. This is used first to spread the opening back out to normal diameter so when you use the actual flaring end it will come out smooth and seat nicely on its mating surface. It’s a compact lit that does something like 1/8” - 5/8” lines and it worked out perfectly for my needs and if you just wanna have your own and know you’ll only use it a handful of times then I’d definitely recommend trying this set out. ... show more

  • Workable for small flares of thin wall SS tubing
Size: Single Flaring & Swaging Tool
This is a pretty good kit for doing basic single 45 degree flares on metal tubing. The one downside I note is that it comes with no instructions whatsoever. Not every buyer will know how to use the tool. The seller could at least attempt to provide some instructions in approximately the English language. If nothing else, they would be entertaining. I bought this to do small flares on stainless steel tubing. I know, the web page says it's only good for soft tubing such as copper or aluminum. I needed it to do some small flares on 3/8" od x 0.028" wall 304 SS tubing. Just small ones, not a full 45 degree trumpet, for the purpose of securing rubber tubing to the stainless with hose clamps. The small flares shown in the pics are sufficient to prevent the hose-clamped rubber tubing separating from the SS tubing. The tool set up well. The clamp fixture bit well onto the tube wall so it did not slip in the clamp when turning the flaring screw. A couple of turns was all that was needed for the small flares I wanted. I wouldn't count on it doing full 45 degree trumpet flares on SS tubing, but at least in this one case it worked for what I need. ... show more

  • Works great. Well worth the cost.
Size: Double & Single Flaring
Works great on the soft steel aftermarket lines. It was difficult to use on the factory steel lines as they were much harder steel. You really have to crank down the tightening screws and I had to go back and rework the flare. Also my factory lines were coated so you have to get that coating stuff off before you can patch into them. I managed to use a hand crimping tool for coax cable and I used the stripping function to pull the coating off. Overall the tool works well and it saved me a big repair bill. ... show more

  • Do not buy this tool if you are flaring NiCopp tubing
Size: Double & Single Flaring
I bought this tool based on the 62% of reviewers considered it a decent tool and gave it a 5 star rating. It might be fine for copper or aluminum but it is not capable of making double flares on 5/16 NiCopp tubing. To be honest, I don't think any of the Chinese made, clamping bar type flaring tools sold on Amazon are worth your money. Here are my complaints; 1. Wing nuts suck. I suppose they use them so folks won't over-tighten the bar clamp. I used a wrench to get the wing nuts a little tighter but not too tight. The bar clamp holds the tubing securely. It did not slip through the clamp while I was performing the first step of a double flare. 2. There are no sizes stamped on the bar clamp but I suppose you'd have to be an idiot not to use the right holes. 3. When the bar clamp is tightened the two halves do not meet squarely. The gap between the two halves was greater at the bottom and this produces a crooked flare. 4. I put a drop of oil on the tip of the anvil but the tubing scratched it. You would think this would be a hardened part. The Ares flaring tool I bought at the same time did not show any gouges or scratches. 5. I didn't use the tubing cutter because it is probably junk too. 6. I didn't use their 5/16 double flare button because some of the reviews said they were cheaply made. I used the button from my 1970s Craftsman flaring tool which has always given me good service. If you insist on buying this tool, make sure you use oil on the threads and tip of the anvil tool. Use just a touch of grease on the double flaring button. File the end of your tubing square and chamfer the inside and outside diameter. This tool will still make a crappy flare though. ... show more

  • Broke after 4 flares
Size: Double & Single Flaring
One of the lockdown bolts on the die stripped on the fourth flare. The tightening bar is small diameter & short, impossible to over tighten. I was able to find a bolt in my shop that matched the threads and allow me to finish the flare I was making. But I ordered a higher quality tool to finish the job. I don’t flare a lot of fittings, was hoping that I could get by with this tool. Maybe the threads in the tool I got were just a quality control failure, the rest of the tool seems OK. But it still cost me in the end. ... show more
