We have 2007 Honda Pilot with over 140K miles on it and the check engine light comes on once in a while. We took it to the shop in panic and they told us that it needs to replace one of the catalytic converters, which will cost $2K including labor. I really didn't want to spend that much money because we won't even get $2K trade in value for that car. The mechanic was nice and honest enough to let me know that I can still drive it indefinitely without any issue so he reset the check engine light for me and I took the car back without replacing the catalytic converter. Now, my only dilemma was what to do if the check engine light comes on again? How would I know if it's the same catalytic converter warning or something new and more serious since the car is old and is reaching the limit. After researching, I learned about the OBD2 scanner for the first time last year and purchased a cheap one but now I'm buying this one, which has a lot more feature and better screen and buttons, for my wife's new car. This is so easy and simple to use that any one who knows how to plug in USB port can use it. In face, the most difficult part is locating the ODB2 connector port in your car, which has nothing to do with this scanner. I had to get close to the floor to see it just above the accelerator pad but it has a matching groove on one side so there's only one way to plug it in. This OBD2 scanner is more advanced that the one I bought last year and has on-board monitor test, I/M readiness, EVAP tests, and even O2 sensor test. It's great to have this in your car in case you see the check engine light so you know what the problem is before taking it to the shop and pay hourly rate, not to mention you would know if the mechanic is telling the truth or not (potentially not get ripped off for $$$). Highly recommend this to all car owners! Please note that while the scan will work even if the engine is on, it won't clear the code and the check engine light while the engine is on. Therefore, it's better to use the scanner while the car's ignition is ON (two key turns) WITHOUT running the engine. Hope this was useful... and if it was, please click on the helpful button below. I like ThinkCar products. They are generally well made and offer a lot of features for the price. This S99 scan tool is a bit different than most others. These tools all offer standard OBD11 diagnostics across all brands, but to scan brand specific systems, the S99 will only do one manufacturer, which you select from the 38 available. Now, if you are a Toyota or Ford family, for example, that works out well...why pay for functionality you don't need.? Just realize for other manufacturers, this will operate as a basic OBDII scan tool. Now, for the manufacturer you select, you can full system scan, live data and limited reset functionality. The SP99 connects to the car easily, communicates with it quickly and I find the menu system intuitive and easy to navigate. The 3.5" display is easy to read. Auto VIN detection works well. One year warranty, lifetime free updates. Updates require you to remove the SD card from the device and update it in a computer. My initial inclination was to give this 3 stars based on the single manufacturer expanded functionality. Thinkcar, however, clearly discloses that and does pretend it does more. Since I own multiple brands of cars and like to help friends, this would not be my first choice. Single brand families might find this entirely adequate. ... show more

I am normally very weary of inexpensive (cheap) scan tools, as I have used everything from the ELM327 to the handheld Autel scanners, to the Maxisys Tablet scanners, and the cheap ones usually lack access to most multiplexed or independent systems such as the ABS or the TCM. I needed a scan tool to access transmission codes which my current scanner did not have access to. Immediately upon hooking this scan tool to the OBDII connector, it turned on and displayed a very simple to use interface. It even gives step by step instructions in case you haven't used a scan tool before. I was able to use it to get my transmission DTCs and perform the repairs and erase the codes promptly. I am very pleased with this purchase, and will be carrying this lightweight but robust scan tool with me daily from this point. I'm a Service Manager and I bought one of these to have on the Service Drive to quickly scan cars to get an idea of what kind of Diag is going to be needed. It helps set better expectations for customer wait times and gives my advisors a way to decide which level of technician the vehicle may need to get to. The scanner itself has some pretty good features. It's a Chinese generic scanner. So the menus are super basic and the manual doesn't offer much help there... If you have experience with OBD you can navigate pretty easily and understand what you're looking at. If you're not, you might want to get a more basic scanner. A plus for this scanner is it can get real-time feedback as well. For the price, a lot of functionality - As long as you're experienced enough to use it. ... show more

    • Easy to use. But..........
The OBD scanner is easy to use & the length of the cable is very ample. I used the scanner in my 2014 corvette that was indicating a Check Engine Light (CEL). It ID'd the issue but would not clear it. I attempted to clear it on 3 separate attempts and it just would't clear the CEL, even though it was a minor emission issue. I also scanned a 2013 Jaguar that was indicating a CEL; it ID'd the issue & allowed me to clear it on the first attempt. Overall it's a good product and gives me peace of mind knowing why the Check Engine Light came on. No need to rely on a service technician to troubleshoot for you.
