  • A good entry-level thermal camera dongle
Style: P1
This is my first thermal camera so comparisons are few. What I can say is that it does the job as promised. My biggest problem concerns the companion app it needs: the slow way of changing the temperature unit to be displayed. Still that’s a minor issue in comparison of the overall picture. The X3 technology is by default on and I do not recommend otherwise. For the image quality would go from great to mediocre. Ease of use? You just plug it in and go to the app. Or just wait a few seconds for the phone to ask if you want to go to the app. A good and inexpensive item for just playing around with thermal imaging. ... show more

  • Great Inexpensive thermal imager
Style: P1
Works great. Still figuring it out but I can't imagine I would need anything more than this for general consumer household use. Will now have to figure out how to get insulation into the walls of a house from 1918.

  • Perfect Toy, Terrible Instrument: Buy This for Fun, Not for Measurement
Style: P1
I was genuinely excited to try the Thermal Master IR camera. It’s compact—about an inch tall and roughly the width of a smartphone—and plugs directly into a USB-C port. Power comes straight from the phone battery, and the included app instantly displays a live thermal view. I tested it on Android, though it apparently supports iPhones too. For such a small and inexpensive device, it’s a technological marvel. Having previously worked with high-end security IR cameras that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and had lower resolution, and didn't fit entirely in my hand, I have to admit: the progress in thermal imaging tech is jaw-dropping. This little camera delivers an image resolution of about 240×192, which is fantastic for its price point. Thermal sensitivity is excellent—it easily shows temperature differences under a degree. You can literally see the footprints you leave on the floor. The app is stable, intuitive, and even lets you tag temperature readings on multiple points in real time. You can record both images and videos, and everything just… works. Now for the catch—and it’s a big one. The automatic gain control (AGC) can’t be turned off. This means every time you shift your view, the overall brightness and color scale adjust automatically. The result: the camera always produces visually striking images but makes any sort of rigorous or repeatable measurement nearly impossible. Try following subtle gradients—like tracing hot-water pipes under a floor—and the color scale shifts the moment your hand or leg drifts into frame. What looked “hot” a moment ago suddenly cools down, purely because the camera re-normalized its gain. To be fair, most consumer-grade IR devices struggle with accuracy because of emissivity differences (how various materials emit infrared radiation). Wood, paint, concrete, glass, and metal all radiate heat differently, so the same apparent color might correspond to very different actual temperatures. This camera is no exception—great for telling things apart, terrible for measuring true values. Add to that the near-total lack of documentation (especially on the app or its calibration features), and it’s clear that precision work wasn’t the design goal here. That said, for general use it’s fantastic. It’s perfectly acceptable for finding thin spots in your home’s insulation, spotting drafts, or even locating warm-blooded visitors—like pets (or bears) in the dark. For quick diagnostics and casual exploration, it performs beautifully. Bottom line: This device is an impressive, easy-to-use, and genuinely fun piece of tech that lets you explore the invisible world of heat. But without a way to disable the AGC, it’s virtually useless for scientific or engineering applications. Still, if your goal is curiosity and play—not calibration and accuracy—it’s an amazing little gadget for the price. ... show more

  • Good choice!
Style: P1
I bought this as a gift for my fiance who is an electrician. He was really amazed by it, and said it’s much better than he thought, and the quality is really good. Very clear imaging. He messed with it for hours! Checked out everything in the house, and eventually went outside to look for coyote's lol. Was a good buy, really glad I chose to get him this. ... show more

  • Great on paper
Style: P1
I really wanted to like the Thermal Master P1. On paper, the specs look incredible; almost too good for the price. Unfortunately, after using it, I can confidently say: they are too good for the price. The build quality is the first red flag. The device feels like a toy; light, flimsy, and cheap. Even the connector feels loose every time I attach it to my phone, which doesn’t inspire confidence for something that’s supposed to be used in real-world environments. Then there’s the app. Glitchy is an understatement. It froze repeatedly, crashed twice, and half the time wouldn’t even recognize the camera was plugged in. When it did work, buttons lagged, menus stuttered, and basic settings felt half-finished. And finally, performance. This is the make-or-break moment for any thermal camera, and the P1 just doesn’t deliver. The imagery was muddy, the frame rate felt choppy, and the temperature readings were all over the place, sometimes off by as much as 10–15 degrees. For a tool that’s supposed to help diagnose issues, that’s a dealbreaker. Bottom line: The P1 promises pro-level specs at a bargain price, but in reality, it performs like a budget gadget pretending to be something more. Save your money and look for a device that’s actually built well and backed by a stable app. ... show more

  • Well... it works great, but...
Style: P1
It does everything it advertisez, has a great temp range, super sensitive to thermal changes in the view. It's easy to use, and of good quality. HOWEVER. It does lock you into accepting all terms and data collection practices, or else it's bricked. Use an old phone or tablet.
