I have a Penn Plax 1200 filter on my 55 gallon tank. This tank has a substantial bio-load with a RES turtle, 7 Giant Danio fish, and 2 plecos (ugh). But this isn't a filter review, this is a hood/light review! Because I have an above-tank basking dock for my RES, I only needed this hood for one side. It fit one half of my 55 gallon PERFECTLY (purchased the 24x12)! No gaps, no issues. Assembly was so simple (you have to clip the LED lights on, cut out/bend off whatever back opening you want, and clip the hooks to it and the tank, but that's it). The hooks for the back were an added bonus. It came with 8 hooks, but I only needed the 2. There were 4 of each size hooks, so I assume it was for one set of hooks (2) for whatever size tank you have, plus one back up set. I also love that you can customize the back opening for filter components, since I keep the water level pretty high and my turtle would just LOVE to crawl out of the tank. The two filter components had no issues fitting through just one half of the possible opening, while the cord for the heater and light easily fit through the provided opening for the light cord. Very happy with this hood. It's nice and flush, has a small and efficient opening for feeding, and works perfectly. Hopefully it holds up. I wish you could buy the string of LED lights this came with so I could finagle it to the bottom of my DIY dock on the other side, but oh well. Great product, so pleased! ... show more

    • I mean, it's a fish tank lid.
Fit my 20 Long perfectly. Was out of stock whenever I placed my order but these style lids are uncommon in my area so I was willing to wait. I was afraid it might not come back into stock, but it did, and it didn't even take very long. Two weeks to a month maybe? The only thing I would say you should know about this tank lid is that the lights that come with it by default are very bright white lights. If that's what you're looking for, then great, you're all set. But personally that didn't work for the deep sea theme I wanted, so I just got some cheap color light bars of my own to attach to it and give it that nice deep blue color. Overall, it's exactly what you'd expect. A bit pricey and hard to get ahold of, but if you've got the time to wait, even if this lid is listed on Amazon as out of stock, go ahead and put your order in.     • Good light and cover for aquarium
This was a little hard to put together - read the instructions , it helps. It is a little flimsy, but it has a good light an easy to use on off switch. It fit my aquarium well and looks good. It has an opening for easy feeding of fish and openings in the rear for filter and heater. It fits snugly and it can be lifted to open for cleaning or netting fish. The price is low for an aquarium light. LED's don't heat the water or use much electricity. ... show more

    • Good but too strong for red eye tetras in a 20 Gallon aquarium

This is a great product. My plants love it. However our red eye tetras hide away when the lights are on - we don't see them all day long. Only when we switch the lights off, they come out. Cory cats also hide from this light but less, they are too busy sniffing around to be bothered by any light for too long. They tolerate it better. Black Mollies were absolutely OK with this light. Depends on your fish. It could be nice to have a dimmer, but otherwise, nice hood. Edit: we have this hood for over two years now. Some of LEDs don't work well any longer, probably due to a corrosion by water vapors. The photo of decaying LEDs on our hood are attached. The disabled LEDs created sort of a gradient light effect, which I actually like, and my fish enjoys, but my plants in the darker part don't. So we asked if the manufacturer had a replacement for the LEDs, for which they answered that "No, but the customers could buy other LED lights of their choice on the market". Indeed there are many LEDs on the market, but I bought this product because I liked these LEDs. Instead of seeing a business opportunity in purchase of consumables, the manufacturer sends their customers to look somewhere else. Weird. I wish there was a replacement for these specific LEDs! ... show more

Seems like a durable material and has the design to let you take out spots of the top to fit things like a filter, heater, etc. You have to put the LED lights on the top, however it was super easy for me. I heard that sometimes these lights might go out, but I received a paper with item ID numbers for the LED lights, so I recommend keeping that just incase!     • Cheap quality compared to the tank
As other reviewer have said, it does fit my tetra tank perfectly size wise, so it felt like my only choice from the same manufacturer as the tank. The material of the hood is very cheaply built. It's flimsy, and the tank cover was already warped so it doesn't sit flat on the tank. I was disappointed that the hood costs half again as much as the tank -- I would have been okay with this if the material quality matched my expectations, or maybe okay if the hood was priced about half what it is here. While the tank seems like it has good quality materials, this hood feels like very cheap, thin materials, so as a consumer I get the feeling like maybe Tetra was using a pricing strategy rather than trying to give me the best quality. The cutouts only have a few choices, so in order to get the filter in the right spat, I had to cut out the larger cutout than I wanted, then I taped part of it back on to increase the coverage, which means you can see tape on my tank hood -- not a good look. I also found the wire length to the light switch seems very short. My only option is for the light switch to be behind the tank, which is far from convenient and requires me bending down and under the table to switch it on or off. This also felt cheap to me, especially considering that the rest of the power cable is much longer. I plan to eventually buy another hood from another manufacturer instead. ... show more

    • LED lights are great, but life of bulbs are disappointing.

I guess the title says it all. I bought this back in October 2020 for our 10 gallon aquariums. My wife and I enjoyed the brightness of the LED lights. I was not impressed with the design of the system though. Basicially, you have a string of small LED lights strung out on the wire that have to be individually attached to the hood. There is no protection of the system from water that might be splashed - no guard. Attaching the lights to the hood is a simple, if sometimes frustrating process. The hood is rather thin and feels flimsy; the opening in back for filter and heater is small. I actually had to widen it to fit our 10-20 gallon (the size of the tank this cover is supposed to be designed for) power filter. But once that's done, no problem - until the LED lights (the reason we bought this lid) went out. Now, we ordered the hood(s) (we bought two of them) in October, as I recall we didn't receive them until November when we set them up. So they lasted seven months. If we burned them constantly I'd say, "Okay," but we rarely turn the lights on as the room our tanks are in are well lit and rarely really needed during the day. So, needless to say I am disappointed. ... show more
