  • Perfect! Perfect!
I’ve been out of the aquarium game for years due to nursing school, work, and health issues but now I can finally breathe again and I decided to jump back in!! This was the absolute perfect tank to start back up with. It’s pretty quiet (you hear it but it’s not obnoxious!) and it’s simply beautiful. The design is clean and I love the curved design with the lid. The lights are super customizable and dimmable. Everything works well together and it is a thoughtful design. While I don’t love losing space to the back (filter and pump), I can hide the heater in the back of the tank so that is a bonus. Assembly is easy and very straight forward. The water flow doesn’t seem too much to stress the fish out either. Overall a really solid design and a beautiful tank especially for those just starting out. ... show more

  • Nice quality tank! Nice quality tank!
Color: Black Size: 15 Gal.
I really like this tank! I was looking for a nice small tank for a planted aquarium. The bow on the front really makes the tank unique and adds a sharp expensive look to the tank. The quality of the glass is nice and the black beading on the back wall and the top rim of the tank really helps clean things up. It nicely hides all the equipment and pumps in the bank and give a nice look to the waterline. The light fixture came DOA, but the seller quickly replaced it and it is now working great. The light is bright and provides a lot of custom options. It may not be the strongest light for a planted tank, but sure looks like it will be more than enough for the plants I am growing. The real compartments are large enough for your own mix of equipment and filter media. The grates on the intakes are a nice touch and will keep small fry or shrimp out of the rear compartments. I added some small filter material inside these grates to further decrease the chance of fry or shrimp entering. The pump is quite strong and is completely silent. I cannot hear it run at all. The tank sits next to my bed and you wouldn't think it was even running. The tank also came with a nice mat for the bottom glass. Overall I am extremely happy with the tank. Ignore the bad or misleading reviews. Perfect planted tank. Great quality and a great price point. Thanks! ... show more

  • Large volume for the apparent size. Large volume for the apparent size.
This replaced an Aqueon 5 gal mini bow tank that sat on my kitchen counter. Even though it holds 80% more water, it's footprint and apparent size is only a little bigger (I have them side-by-side in the picture for comparison). The filtration system is great. I always had an issue with a film on the water's surface before but now the water stays crystal clear and there is no film since the design draws water from near the bottom and an overflow at the top. The issue with animals getting into the filter, that prior purchasers mentioned, has been solved as the current model has guards with smaller holes over the filter inlets. I fill the leftmost chamber at the back of the tank with filter floss which provides great mechanical filtration and increases the size of the biological filter. The lights are very bright at full intensity but can be dimmed. For me, the colored lights and lightning storm settings are really just a novelty but it does have the capability to have white light and a color on at the same time which does make the white lite softer. Because the lid is so close to the water's surface, there is a lot of splashing onto the light but the lights seem to be very well sealed and there have been no issues. I am using the Pm0606 Brand Micro Oxygen Bubble Diffuser Air Stone and the Tetra Whisper Air Pump 20 and the hole in the lid for feeding allows tiny splashes of water to come out (like a full glass of a carbonated beverage). I am using the Fish Mate F14 feeder, which I modified with a plastic tube to serve the same purpose as a feeding ring, over the feeding hole. Laying a small piece of silicon rubber over the remaining feeding hole opening or turning down the airflow solved the slashing problem. I have had the tank for about 2 weeks now and contrary to what I have read on forums, a small tank can cycle. I have been testing the water daily with the API Freshwater Master Test Kit and ammonia and nitrite have remained zero while nitrate is now detectable at about 5 ppm. The fact that this small a tank is cycling may be due to my use of CaribSea Eco-Complete substrate and the floss in the first filter chamber which makes for a larger biological filter. I will update my review in a few months. ... show more

  • Fantastic!! I Love This Aquarium! Fantastic!! I Love This Aquarium!
Color: Black Size: 15 Gal.
For many years, I kept saltwater, brackish, and freshwater aquariums on a pretty large scale. I took a break from the hobby, and recently found myself ready to get back in the saddle, though on a smaller scale. I chose this aquarium for the Fluval name-- I had great prior experiences with Fluval filtration (loved my Fx4!!) This aquarium reignited my love for Fluval. Super quick and easy set-up, attractive, so quiet that you can't hear it running, and the lighting is really sophisticated-- fun to personalize the light settings!! I was pleasantly surprised by the technological advances (and reduced costs) offered by this aquarium, since I was last active in the hobby. Overall, I give this 5+ stars. I plan on buying this set-up again for my parents (and setting up another one for myself!). I do, though, have some suggestions to Fluval, as an experienced aquarist, as to improving this already great aquarium-- 1. The food slot in the front of the tank lid would benefit from having a sliding or hinged door. My cats sit on top of the tank and were easily able to get their paws in, until I installed a mesh cover. 2. It would be nice to have the top hinged, so it would be supported whenever doing water changes. 3. Even though this is a relatively small aquarium, I can see that there might be times that you might want to use additional equipment with it, such as a chiller, sump, or UV sterilizer. However, the current lid design, head space, and design of the partitions between the back chambers doesn't support this. It would be great if those areas could be re-designed to provide flexibility to use additional equipment, as needed. Overall, though, I adore this aquarium!! Already planning my next Fluval Fex 15 gallon tank. Stay tuned! ... show more

  • Excellent, with a few small caveats
Color: Black Size: 15 Gal.
I bought this tank for my daughter and I to have as a hobby together. Overall, I'm quite happy. It's a really nice looking tank and the overall impression is of premium quality. The included pump is powerful and quiet. The LED lighting is nice, powerful enough to see the fish and with the remote you can do all sorts of color combinations and effects. It claims to be capable of providing light for plant growth - after nearly 3 weeks, our java ferns seem happy, and appear to be getting taller. The convex front panel definitely gives it a striking, premium look. Overall I would likely buy the same tank if I had it to do all over again. We have 6 zebra danios and 4 panda cories, they seem very happy. I'm grateful the tank arrived very well packaged, intact and in perfect shape. Would have been an uber-pain in the neck to send back, especially after water and fish were put in. A couple of small nitpicks. There is a couple of millimeters between the upper and lower intake chambers, and the edge of the tank. Twice a danio got caught in between, once on the upper and one on the lower. in both cases I was able to reach in and move it just enough for the fish to wriggle free. So no harm done but it was nerve wracking. I don't love the grid pattern on top of the tank. If you leave the water level short of it you're essentially needlessly making your tank smaller. If you fill it up higher it's hard to watch the fish feeding. It solves a problem that doesn't actually exist, in my opinion. Who cares if there's a visible little ring around the edge? Also I would have loved if the lid was actually hinged and attached to the tank. When performing a water change I leaned the lid up against the wall. It stayed there but the instant I turned my back, it scraped down the wall and toppled to the floor. Didn't break thankfully, but the lid is now all scraped up with blue wall paint embedded into it. I learned my lesson to just remove the lid and put it on the floor but a hinge would have been nice. Also, though it is a quality unit, and I'm definitely happy to pay a little more for quality, given the price I wouldn't necessarily call it a tremendous value, though I wouldn't say it's overpriced either. If they threw in a heater it would be a complete starter kit. With all of that said, the pros far outweigh the minor cons and we were able to set up a nice looking tank without a hitch. If you want a little bit of a step up from the standard tank, this is great option. Bottom line, it is a nice looking piece in my den, fish are happy, I'm happy. ... show more

This tank is pretty sweet. It is durable and has great power in the pump as well as multiple outlets for water flow as well as excellent lighting. It even has an option to mimic a thunder shower pretty sweet!

  • Beautiful! Beautiful!
Color: Black Size: 15 Gal.
Nice sleek design. Lots of room in the back for a heater, bubbler, etc. (I even managed to fit a sponge filter seeded with bacteria from a well established older aquarium in the back to speed up the cycling process (from Angels Plus) The lights are nice. 15 different colors plus a white light with a dimmer switch for all lights. The night time setting is pretty and will make glofish products glow nicely. The lightning setting is novel but I can't see leaving that on much. It just flashes white light like lightning. Kids may like it though. My favorite is the button that cycles through all the colors slowly. I recommend getting a 3D background for this tank before you set it up. The background is black and not all fish look that good against a plain black background. Especially dark colored fish. We got The Underwater Treasures 3D vine background and I could not be happier with it. (Easy to cut to fit this tank and looks fantastic) Only problem we had was that some of our tetras fit through the slits in the intake vents and ended up in the back filter part of the tank. It was pretty hard to get those buggers out of there. Once they were out I put some sponge material over the vents and that seems to have solved the problem. (The sponge fits into the square for the vent that we cut through the background and the background keeps the sponge in place over the vent. I'm not sure how you would solve this issue without a 3D background.) Overall I love this tank and couldn't be happier with it Update 2/23/18 Ive had this tank for almost a year now and I still love it. The only problem I had was about 2 months ago the pump got really slow so the water was barely moving through the filter. I took the pump out, took it apart and cleaned the small sponge around the intake inside the pump (not the big square filter sponge in the back but the tiny one inside the pump itself) and it fixed the problem. (Is it in the directions somewhere to periodically clean the pump itself out? because I completely missed that) anyway...everything is back to normal now. I still highly recommend this tank...Just remember to clean the little tiny sponge inside the pump from time to time. ... show more

  • Worst Customer Service EVER
Color: Black Size: 15 Gal.
I've always heard great things about Fluval and when I saw this tank, I really wanted it. Aesthetically, the tank is beautiful. The lighting is great, However I ran into a few issues with it. 1. The biggest issue I have with it is my particular tank is running hot. Running on the base equipment, i.e. the lights and filter and nothing else... My tank has reached 84 degrees and was still climbing before I manually cooled it down by floating multiple bags of ice in it. I have a fan sitting on top of it right now, blowing into the tank to cool it down, with the hood cracked open to let the heat out, and my ceiling fan is on full blast, with my AC down to 76-77, and it sits at 79 (which is a temperature that I wouldn't mind, if I wasn't taking all of these extra measures to keep it cool). There's no heater in it, and I have an air pump in there - Which I've disconnected and watched to see if that was the issue. -I've contacted the manufacturer about it and they're blaming it on something on my end, claiming that my thermostat is probably wrong and it's probably hotter in the room that the tank is in (even though I have thermometers that say otherwise), and they keep ignoring my questions about the LED possibly malfunctioning or what not... as if the LED wiring can't possibly have a wire messed up (Like my local fish store actually suggested when I explained it all to them, which makes sense when you feel the hood where the light bar is... It's rather hot...) 2. The thing that I could deal with but the above situation has just really put a bad taste in my mouth for this tank - The overhead water flow from the filter is very strong. My fish go up to the water surface over by where the feeding space is and get tossed against the glass from the water coming in so harshly. The filter is non-adjustable so there's no fixing it from that end. 3. The slots for the water intake are HUGE. Any small fish that you would keep in this aquarium can fit right through. I've added a filter sponge cut out for that section to block it all off to take care of that. All in all, the tank is beautiful. The lighting is great and grows plants pretty well. However the overheating is very frustrating and the customer service leaves a lot to be desired, as the latest thing is "Well what type of fish are you keeping anyway" - like that should really matter. My 5 Guppies might not mind it, but the Rasboras that I have ordered might be a little toasty in a tank that's above 80. EDIT: I'll just flat out say it, After all of the email correspondences that I've had with Hagen "Service" representatives, they are absolutely the WORST customer service representatives that I have ever had the displeasure of conversing with. Lord help whoever has an issue with their tank, because they surely won't assist you in any ways. I'll be making a HUGE note of this for future purchases. ... show more
