For many years, I kept saltwater, brackish, and freshwater aquariums on a pretty large scale. I took a break from the hobby, and recently found myself ready to get back in the saddle, though on a smaller scale. I chose this aquarium for the Fluval name-- I had great prior experiences with Fluval filtration (loved my Fx4!!) This aquarium reignited my love for Fluval. Super quick and easy set-up, attractive, so quiet that you can't hear it running, and the lighting is really sophisticated-- fun to personalize the light settings!! I was pleasantly surprised by the technological advances (and reduced costs) offered by this aquarium, since I was last active in the hobby. Overall, I give this 5+ stars. I plan on buying this set-up again for my parents (and setting up another one for myself!). I do, though, have some suggestions to Fluval, as an experienced aquarist, as to improving this already great aquarium-- 1. The food slot in the front of the tank lid would benefit from having a sliding or hinged door. My cats sit on top of the tank and were easily able to get their paws in, until I installed a mesh cover. 2. It would be nice to have the top hinged, so it would be supported whenever doing water changes. 3. Even though this is a relatively small aquarium, I can see that there might be times that you might want to use additional equipment with it, such as a chiller, sump, or UV sterilizer. However, the current lid design, head space, and design of the partitions between the back chambers doesn't support this. It would be great if those areas could be re-designed to provide flexibility to use additional equipment, as needed. Overall, though, I adore this aquarium!! Already planning my next Fluval Fex 15 gallon tank. Stay tuned! ... show more

I have two of these. I liked the 1st one so much, that I added another within the month. I have currently have four Tanks in my Living Room. The built in filters on these are okay, (but) you need to make sure to pull the pumps each time you clean them and remove the pump filter and clean it as well. (Easy to do.) If you do not do this, the water flow will go down considerably reducing thecoverall Filters systems effectiveness. I really like the design of the tank. The included hood and lighting system are nice and you get tons of different lighting options. It is quite easy to add supplemental filters to this set up. Great starter fish tank. Sleek design. I decided to upgrade the filtration and return pump. I'm amazed by the build quality for the price. I bought this tank for my daughter and I to have as a hobby together. Overall, I'm quite happy. It's a really nice looking tank and the overall impression is of premium quality. The included pump is powerful and quiet. The LED lighting is nice, powerful enough to see the fish and with the remote you can do all sorts of color combinations and effects. It claims to be capable of providing light for plant growth - after nearly 3 weeks, our java ferns seem happy, and appear to be getting taller. The convex front panel definitely gives it a striking, premium look. Overall I would likely buy the same tank if I had it to do all over again. We have 6 zebra danios and 4 panda cories, they seem very happy. I'm grateful the tank arrived very well packaged, intact and in perfect shape. Would have been an uber-pain in the neck to send back, especially after water and fish were put in. A couple of small nitpicks. There is a couple of millimeters between the upper and lower intake chambers, and the edge of the tank. Twice a danio got caught in between, once on the upper and one on the lower. in both cases I was able to reach in and move it just enough for the fish to wriggle free. So no harm done but it was nerve wracking. I don't love the grid pattern on top of the tank. If you leave the water level short of it you're essentially needlessly making your tank smaller. If you fill it up higher it's hard to watch the fish feeding. It solves a problem that doesn't actually exist, in my opinion. Who cares if there's a visible little ring around the edge? Also I would have loved if the lid was actually hinged and attached to the tank. When performing a water change I leaned the lid up against the wall. It stayed there but the instant I turned my back, it scraped down the wall and toppled to the floor. Didn't break thankfully, but the lid is now all scraped up with blue wall paint embedded into it. I learned my lesson to just remove the lid and put it on the floor but a hinge would have been nice. Also, though it is a quality unit, and I'm definitely happy to pay a little more for quality, given the price I wouldn't necessarily call it a tremendous value, though I wouldn't say it's overpriced either. If they threw in a heater it would be a complete starter kit. With all of that said, the pros far outweigh the minor cons and we were able to set up a nice looking tank without a hitch. If you want a little bit of a step up from the standard tank, this is great option. Bottom line, it is a nice looking piece in my den, fish are happy, I'm happy. ... show more
