The V165 165W LED Aquarium Light was updated to the new version from March 13, 2024. The intensity interval of the new version is 1%, while the old version is 10%. Great No-Frills Light
Size: 1 Pack 165W LED Aquarium Light
I purchased two of these lights to put over my 65g reef. Following advice online I cracked the units open and 'hacked' them to remove all of the lenses except around the outer perimeter to give better spread. (The lenses on the inner side of both fixtures, where they're next to each other, were also removed.) I was impressed to see that there're some decent measures taken to prevent salt creep from invading through the plexi window at the bottom of the light from splashes -- there's both a bead of silicone and a gasket. However, you'll still be out of luck if you drop the thing in the tank. With the bottom of the fixtures about 10" above the surface of the water and the light set at 75/30 I was getting PAR of about 275 mmol about 8 inches down, and about 125-185 on the sand (with the highest levels at the bottom in the middle of the tank where both fixture's coverage overlapped.) With the lenses removed discoballing is reduced and more light reflects back off the sides of the tank internally, giving better light to otherwise shadowed areas. However, the top of my tank is fully enclosed by a hood; keeping the lights this high with no lenses might be intolerable otherwise, if I didn't have something to block the light-spill. The lights are easy to program using the included remote, but a bit of a pain if you want to turn them on during a time when they're set to be off. It would also be nice to have a soft-start that ramps the lights up from 0 over a period of a few seconds, if only to not startle the fish -- but I now have a screen on the top of my tank, so it's not an issue. The whites at 1% are very bright and may provide a tank that's too white for some users even at this level -- however, personally, I found the whites provided at 70/30 to be pleasing. These lights are extremely bright in terms of PAR when put on full, particularly if you keep all the lenses on. The use of a PAR meter to map out the light coverage of your tank is highly recommended when adding these lights to a tank, particularly if your previous lights were on the dimmer side. I have been acclimating my tank to the new light over the past two weeks and am most of the way to where I want to be; coral growth has already taken off compared to my previous, underpowered light. With the way that I mounted my lights, I was easily able to adjust both of them at the same time using a single remote, if some care was taken with the angles. While the onboard clocks can indeed drift apart, it's very simple to adjust the time on the light to get them back into synch. I'm also impressed by their customer service. Through my own ignorance I screwed up one of the hangers; they responded to my inquiry promptly and went above and beyond helping me out. Ultimately, you get what you pay for, but I consider these to be a fantastic value. These are no-frills lights, but they seem to be built decently well and with quality LEDs, and are more than sufficient to grow corals well, and -- though this is completely subjective -- I find their spectrum pleasing. Viparspectra put their money and effort on the things that really count, and pretty much on nothing else. I will likely pull out the LED drivers and replace them with 0-10v versions so that I can use my Apex to dim them, but that's a low priority upgrade. However, given the light's construction, it should be relatively simple to do so. ... show more

so far they are amazing. Had to edit after losing corals, and speaking with the manufacturer for a work around. So this is my new revision. My t5 dont have the options this dose but they don't burn my corals white. Old style you could do 1% tuning to light. 40 blue and 2% white is a common setting for 100g tanks ...... at 12" above the tank water level 30 blue and 10% white I bleached 3 acro in 2 days after adding this light. I did blue 10% to 30% over the 3 days. And left the white at 10% as that is lowest setting. Friend runs his older lights at 40% blue and 2% white and they are grate. No idea why they would change to 10% jumps other then pushing cost down. Definitely would not risk my corals with this now. Not worth it. There are similar lights with more bells out now for the same price. I have 2 lights barley used roughly $320 setting on a shelf I guess I'll use for a fish only tank if I set one up. As I tried to find a way to make them work instead of just returning them like I knew I should. My fault for wanting them to work. I had ran across a post on R2R that said they would send you a old style timer for the whites if you asked for it. That was the last thing I tried and they told me no more timers. This is disappointing but not unexpected. I think the lights are solid just to much white for tanks unless they are 16" or higher and that puts the lights right in your eyes. People are removing the lenses and building shades to get them to work. I'm not going to do that. It should work when I buy it. Don't risk it. Better options out there that do work. OK so update. The customer service is worth 2 more stars. After they had said they ran out of the timers forn1% adjustment, I got a email 2 days ago telling my they had found 2 more in the warehouse. And are sending them to me free of charge. I do wish the lights came that way from the start but the customer service is leaps and bounds better then anyone I have dealt with in the last 4 years. I can't say I know anyone who notnonly keeps looking but then ships it out free. This was the email I got. "Luckily we have just been informed by the aftermarket centre that they have found the last two old timers still available and have sent them to you. Here is the courier information:" I want to to buy this customer service representative a drink. My hats off to them. ... show more

Great light for the money! New version good as old.

I've had two of the older version of this light over my 120g 48x24x25 tank for several years and I couldn't be happier with them. On one of them the blue lights stopped working recently, so I bought a new one to replace it. At first, when I realized the the incremental brightness control on the new one was now in increments of 10 to 100, rather than 1 to 100 on the older version, I was concerned that the ten setting would be too bright for my corals, since I kept the older version set at two. Some reviews and other third party blogs also expressed concern that a ten setting would blanch or scorch their corals, so I was also concerned. However, I installed the new replacement light on the right side of my tank and set it for 10/10 brightness. I don't have any special equipment like PAR meters or whatever, but just based on my mark one eyeball, it looks like the 10/10 setting on the new light on the right is pretty darn close to the 2/2 setting on my old light on the left. I haven't made any comparisons at the higher settings; I'll leave that to someone else. I just wanted to let those who keep the old version to lower settings know that they don't necessarily need to worry about the change from increments of 1 to increments of 10 in the new version. Excellent bang for the buck.

I have had these for 3 weeks so far and prior reviews seem spot on. The lights are VERY bright, I have my blues on 10/100 and whites at 1/100 until my corals can get used to them. Even at those low levels some corals closed up for about a week. Now that they're acclimated everything is open and seems to be doing great. I have no doubt these would work well for SPS corals. The lights are pretty quiet. The higher you turn the brightness, the faster the fan will go, so it may produce a little noise at higher levels. I like that the bulbs have their own individual lenses and are recessed slightly inside them. This seems to keep the light slightly focused downward and cuts down a little on light bleed outside the tank. The controls are slightly clunky, but easy to figure out. It helps to use the remote instead of the dial on the light. Overall I don't think you could find a better light for the money. ... show more

NOT BAD AT ALL!!

Very nice!! Especially after dropping my ocean revive t247 led into the tank🤣🤣 Currently 17 inches above tanks water and only powered to 10 percent blues and 1 percent on white channel. Please break in any led or take advantage of acclimation features on primes or radion leds! I'm started off at 10 percent for atleast 10 to 15 days before adding 5 percent. Already the corals are opening after 1 day. Just remember start off 5 to 10 percent and increase after at least two weeks or if you notice corals are opening up. I will repost after one month with before and after pictures, but not bad at 125 to 150 dollars. Currently tank is forty gallon breeder saltwater tank. ... show more

We bought these for a 40g salt water aquarium. New to the hobby and thought that this light would give us good lighting to help grow corals and things. I would say overall we did see a difference in how the few corals we had reacted to the lighting. They seemed “happier”. The light is simple and user friendly but the downside I would say is the range and customization of the lighting and schedule is very limited. The blues are very bright and the white are very subtle so it doesn’t give you many options. We run two on our 140g now. ... show more
