  • Great device for OTA recording!
I've had my Tablo QUAD and 4TB WD external hard drive connected for several days and so far they're absolutely doing the job for which I bought them (pausing and rewinding live TV and recording my favorite programs). I had recently added the same indoor digital over-the-air (OTA) antenna to both my den and bedroom TVs with the hope of dropping YouTube TV because the price keeps increasing and I don't watch most of the channels. (I dropped Hulu Live TV because of their price increases.) The channels I do watch and record are either picked up by my new OTA antenna or available as inexpensive streaming services through my Roku devices on both TVs. (YouTube TV also claims to include my all local network channels but some are missing or coming from the wrong city even though they have my correct city and ZIP code.) My bedroom OTA antenna picks up more channels and gets better reception than the antenna in my den because it faces a different direction, so I connected the Tablo to my small Samsung TV there. The great news about the Tablo QUAD model is that I can access it over my home wifi network using the Tablo app on my Roku device attached to my large den TV, and control it just as if it was directly attached to the den TV, while getting the benefits of more channels and better reception from my bedroom OTA antenna. I have successfully recorded several programs, all of which have been clear and complete. (Of course, with any OTA antenna, occasional signal interruption and/or loss is to be expected but so far, none of my recordings have been affected thanks to my antenna's capabilities.) YouTube TV recordings often stop a minute or so before the end of the program, which is so frustrating and there isn't a setting to adjust that. (I have other issues with YouTube TV's DVR features that I won't go into here.) With the Tablo, I can set recordings to start early and end late, with several options similar to the Motorola DVR I had with my former cable provider. Tablo's optional TV Guide Data Service is excellent, allowing me to see information about future programs up to 14 days ahead and set them up for recording. (After the 30-day free trial period that comes with the device, there's a small cost of $4.99 monthly or $49.99 annually to continue with the guide, which I am willing to pay for this well-designed service. If you don't want to pay for Tablo's built-in guide, you can use a web browser to access a free online TV guide separately and then set up a manual recording in the Tablo.) The Tablo's interface for finding and playing existing recordings is wonderful, with both text and recognizable thumbnails. The Scheduled section, with its two different ways to view the schedule of future recordings, allows me to view and adjust my recording options, either for an entire series or for each individual episode in a series. All in all, I think the Tablo is a pretty sophisticated little device. The only thing I find mildly frustrating is the 8-second delay before a selected live channel begins playing, but I'm sure there's a logical technical explanation for that, and the fact that I can pause and rewind live TV makes up for it. (Recordings have no playback delay.) ... show more

  • Old Model, but would Avoid All of Them
Has a decent guide, if you can ever find it. Horrible software and user interface. Complex, slow and convoluted to operate. Worthless for someone who just wants to watch and save some TV programs. Never before have I seen such a stupid remote. Well, maybe a Fire TV.

  • Overall Great but Some Glitches
So if you contact Tablo you get to talk to a North American based tech support. Awesome! They now claim they aren’t supporting tv brands like LG or Samsung. I have an LG and for the most part it works fine. Find I need to go a bit slow when using fast forward/rewind or moving through menus. Going to fast it can lock up requiring a reboot. They recommended Roku. Got a Roku and can’t play most of my recordings as they were recorded in surround sound mode. But it’s pretty cheap and beats paying cable. ... show more

  • Easy to use OTA DVR
I originally wanted the streaming version of this device. But my TV was not smart enough to use it. I returned it and got the HDMI version. As it turns out the Turners in the HDMI version are a little more sensitive than in the streaming version of the DVR. Also I did not buy this to be a court cutter. I purchased this DVR to reduce the record conflicts on the cable DVR. Six channels of simultaneous recording may sound like a lot but when you have six channels and 5 people in the household you gonna need some extra Recording capabilities.. I set this up using the marathon antenna on top of my second-story roof which easily picked up the UHF stations to the southeast. Amazingly it also picked up the VHF stations to the West. The West is somewhat blocked by a hillside and in the analog days it required a 30 to 40 foot mast on top of the second-story to receive the VHS on the West Coast. The device is easy to set up it's basically like a TV you just do the channel selection after putting in your ZIP Code and it knows what channels to look for. Which is good because where I live I also picked up a lot of channels out of Mexico. The guide service is also very easy to use and the lifetime subscription is reasonably priced. When you hook up a USB drive to it it needs to be self powered. Sadly that's my only complaint about this device compared to the streamer you can't just put a drive in it. The guide is easy to use and the commercial skip works pretty good on most programs some programs that have segues that go in and out with additional programming don't work too well. I found more trouble trying to record 60 minutes than other programs. But for those programs you can just use the fast forward or fast rewind skip to go past the commercials. One more point about this being a court cutter for cable. Most of the extra programming you're going to get will be older than the viewers. ... show more
