I bought this to replace a much smaller plastic ball winder, and I'm in love. I took a chance since it was cheaper than other listings and had no reviews yet, but I'm very impressed. It has metal gears, which are quite loud, but the yarn guide attaches securely so it doesn't rattle or fall. It works great, very smooth action and very stable. Putting a piece of felt between the base and my table did reduce the noise somewhat. But you can't beat the value of a large yarn winder at this price. ... show more

    • Pro: weight and size.
I like that this is larger and can handle a whole skein of yarn unlike the smaller ones. It’s very heavy. Good metal gears. BUT, it is moody as hell. I had to oil everything to get it to turn. I had to tape down the yarn guide because it bounces everywhere. I can’t have the SLIGHTEST bit of tension on the yarn. And worst of all, I have to hold the yarn at a specific angle while simultaneously winding or the yarn guide and flyer get tangled up. I wonder if the flyer is just a bit too long or maybe the angle of the bobbin is just a bit off. ... show more
