  • Well-Supported, Dual-Lens Dash Cam with Excellent Video Quality
Size: High Grade 128GB MicroSD Card
I received and installed this camera last week and have tested it in various lighting and driving conditions. I can't think of a single bad thing to say about it. The image quality is outstanding compared to most other dual-lens cameras, and the installation was as simple as can be expected for any camera that requires running cables through the car. The firmware upgrade was also a no-brainer when I followed the simple instructions. I'd love to post some video, but Amazon over-compresses videos and they wind up looking horrible and not reflecting the true quality of the camera. I used to have some demo videos posted on my Vimeo account, on which I used the same user name as I use here; but the RIAA filed a complaint because I had the car radio on in the background. So Vimeo deleted the videos, and I in turn deleted my Vimeo account. My apologies. I'm sure the videos were helpful to many people. But alas, they are no more. In dual-camera mode, the camera records in 1920 x 1080 at 30 FPS both front and rear. That's as much as the chipset can handle and should be adequate for recording any driving situation short of maybe driving in the Grand Prix. Both the front and rear cameras perform admirably and deliver crisp video when in the high-quality mode. I didn't test the camera in the low- or medium-quality modes. I used the included Samsung EVO Select Micro-SD card Samsung 128GB 100MB/s (U3) MicroSD EVO Select Memory Card with Adapter (MB-ME128GA/AM) and experienced no problems with it. It's too soon for me to say how long it will last -- flash memory does wear out -- but it's the card that the manufacturer includes and seems to work fine. I also have a second card of the same model that works fine, as does a SanDisk Extreme Pro card that I purchased elsewhere. I urge readers to avoid el-cheapo cards in this or any other video surveillance device. Dash cams put SD cards through a lot of abuse. They need good, high-quality cards. Use at least the quality of card that the manufacturer provides, never lower. This is one case in which you really don't want to pinch pennies. You should also reformat the card in the camera after removing it and using it in any other device, such as a computer. It only takes a second or two. One thing I should mention is that even a slight fingerprint on the lenses or on the polarizing filter for the front camera will make a big difference in picture quality. If you find the image fuzzy or otherwise under par, check for fingerprints and clean the lenses with a microfiber cloth made for that purpose. It makes a big difference. Also make sure that the windshield is clean, obviously. Another thing I should mention is that this is quite possibly the best-supported electronic device I've ever purchased. Both the manufacturer and the U.S. distributor spend a lot of time on the Dash Cam Talk forum, and most questions are answered within minutes of being posted. The manufacturer is also very transparent about bug fixes and new features that are implemented and enabled in every firmware update; so if you're a geeky sort like I am, you'll find yourself in the company of kindred spirits. But if not, you can simply install the thing and forget about it. It worked quite well out of the box even before I updated the firmware. Another example of the company's support may seem like an odd one to point out: It's the delay in the release of the hardwire cable. Apparently they had some trouble with the test batch, so they're reworking them before releasing them to market. It may seem odd to consider a delay a positive thing, but it's much better than selling a sub-par product. It demonstrates a sense of responsibility and commitment to quality on the manufacturer's part. About the only suggestion I can make to improve this product would be to include a short cable for individuals who want to mount the rear camera forward and pointing back into the vehicle cabin to monitor the passengers. I had no need for that sort of installation, but some users might. Other than that, I can't think of a single improvement. The camera and the company's support of it have far exceeded my expectations. Richard ... show more

  • Chose this cam after lots of research
Size: High Grade 64GB MicroSD Card
I originally went to Best Buy to get a dash cam, and they did not have a lot of options. I had done just enough research to know that I needed a camera that was tested (and passed) in hot temperatures. I also wanted a front and rear camera. I ended up buying something that didn't quite match what I wanted, but I got it because it was on sale for about 60 dollars. It was by Thinkware, and most reviews I came across for that brand were pretty good. Well, that dash cam only worked for 4 days. It just quit turning on for absolutely no reason. I tried all kinds of troubleshooting techniques and nothing worked, so I went to Best Buy and returned it. Disappointed, I went home and began researching again for the "best" dash cam. I read an endless number of the "Top (fill in the #) List of Best Dash Cams", and every list was different from the others. There were so many different brands on every list, and none of the information was consistent. I was getting cross-eyed and dizzy from looking at the computer so long and reading all of these articles and reviews. Finally, I went to Amazon and started searching the highest rated cameras by the consumers. To wrap this up, Street Guardian won my purchase due to the consistently high reviews and repeated mentions of excellent customer service. The only negative thing I experienced was that the instructions were incredibly vague. I had to figure a lot of it out by myself. The camera has been working great. I wish the picture could be a little bit sharper, but I think we are just spoiled these days by such high quality TV's, etc. After all, this is a very small camera that looks through a windshield, so considering that, it is great. I love the rear camera too. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but I tried to save money with the first one and it was a dud. To me, spending more money on a quality product is worth it. ... show more

  • Compact camera with great video - installed in Prado
Size: High Grade 128GB MicroSD Card
Video quality looks great. The cameras are much smaller than I expected. Installation of the front camera and GPS was fine in a Toyota Prado TX-L (2015, 7 seater, RHD) but the read camera was a more challenge - my fault for blanking that the rear door opens on the right side. The 6m cable for the rear camera was a bit short if threaded along the floor but had 20cm to spare when threaded through the roof on the drivers' (= right) side, behind the airbags in the pillars. The challenges came when passing it down to the rubber conduit between the body and the rear door, through a hole in the conduit on the body end (taped tightly where the cables for the read lights and wipers entered the conduit) and out the door end, then back up to the top of the window. An opened wire coat hanger helped pass it up inside the door to the top of the window. I wish I had known that the plastic interior panel in the center above the window needs to be pried off first - I started with the side interior panel and lost one of the clips, because in fact the center panel covers up the ends of each side panel. The extras (extra mounting tape, cable holders, polarizing filter, 3m and 6m options for rear cable, etc) are extremely helpful. Searched and searched for installation of the rear camera in a Prado - surprised to find nothing, despite all the Prados sold in Australia. Update after 2 months and one accident: both cameras are working well and video footage is quite clear for both, tho have only looked at daytime video. Had an accident last weekend that pointed out a slight challenge with the cameras - actually viewing videos. The screen is nice but oriented as it is (essentially one needs to look up to see the screen) in the daytime it is hard to make anything out without pulling the camera off the mount, and even then it is hard to make anything out. Moving videos to another device is a bit awkward. Naturally one needs to pull out the SD card and, using an adapter, slide it into a laptop. Both software programs recommended - Dashcam Viewer and Registrator Viewer - are not so easy to use. Dashcam Viewer seems to have issues with recognizing and playing the rear camera video on some travel segments (why?) and Registrator Viewer is no longer maintained (sadly, the developer died in a motorcycle accident ...). In the end it iTunes or any other standard video viewer might be as good as the 2 viewers - the bells and whistles of maps, etc fade if one can't view a needed video. Ironically the best way to get screen shots seems to be through a print screen of video on iTunes, cropped in Photoshop elements. That way the date and time stamp is clear, not so with trying to pull a frameshot from Registrator (since the key accident video was a rear camera clip that Dashcam Viewer wouldn't recognize, I haven't tried it with that program). Since when dealing with police or others on the street, using a computer is not so easy or efficient, it would also help to have an easy way to get video segments on one's smartphone. The SanDisk iXpand saves the day in transferring video and frameshots from my laptop to my iPhone (it may be only a simple setting, but the cable connect seems to be read-only for the phone). Street guardian should try to beef up wifi links and improving software for phone or computer. ... show more
