I work in an office where we have literally thousands of Steelcase Leap chairs. I've seen people abuse there's by spilling coffee, green smoothies, and yogurt on them. I've seen them used as step stools and used in 'chair races'. I've personally been using the same one for going on 4 years and I have *never* seen one break to the point of being unusable or beyond the point of repair. I also have an Interior Design degree specializing in Commercial office design and have a lot of respect for the Steelcase brand. That being said, I'm not prepared to spend $950 on a Leap chair...eek. While totally worth it, in my opinion, I wanted something a little cheaper for my home office. About 3 months ago I started having problems with my left hip. Like a lot of people, I was using a desk chair I had purchased at Office Depot...my 3rd in 5 years...and the seat was aggravating my hip. I knew I needed a good quality chair and I had noticed my hip NEVER hurt while at work using my Leap chair. I wanted to give Steelcase a shot. After looking at several Steelcase options, I came across the Series 1 and thought it hit all my high points - lower lumbar support, adjustments for seat depth and seat height, and adjustable arms. And best of all the price wasn't super ridiculous. I had been paying around $150 per chair I bought at Office Depot - 3 chairs totaling $450 - the $430 for the Series 1 didn't look so bad. So I took a chance on a $430 chair that had zero reviews. :) It came fully put together in a large box. It was secured well enough and there was no damage in shipping to the chair. The chair is also super light weight so it was no problem hauling it upstairs fully assembled. It has a nice firm seat that is comfortable and has helped immensely with my hip pain. And while the lumbar support isn't quite as strong as I like, it does give support and I really like the shape of the back of the chair. It feels molded to my back and the mesh is very breathable. The only negative I can give this chair is the arms feel a little flimsy. I feel like I need to be careful with how much pressure I put on the arms getting up and down for fear they might weaken over time. No issues as of yet though. TLDR? I sincerely wish I could give this a 4.5! I feel that would be perfect and very fair. I can't in good conscious give it a full 5 stars because of the arms, but I feel this is a great chair and worth the higher price tag. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone that wants a good quality chair by a respected name that will last for several years.

I couldn't find this chair in a store to test out before buying (they had Leaps but not this model). But considering Steelcase makes good chairs in general and the high reviews here, I decided to order it without having tried it in person. Now I very much regret it. THE GOOD (let's start here) -4D Arms: You get 4D arms, which you normally won't find on cheaper chairs. Not much more to say here. -Comes Assembled: This came in a huge box, preassembled, which was great. Note however that the box was so big I didn't have the space to keep it around in my apartment (in case I wanted to return the chair) and had to toss it right after taking out the chair and confirming all the levers worked and nothing was broken. THE SO-SO: -The Armrests: They are 4D so that is good, but other than that there isn't much going for them. They are thin and hard plastic so they're not that comfortable, especially when using them for a long time. Aside from the height (which locks in), the 4D armrests aren't good at holding their position. If you adjust your sitting position while resting on the armrests, chances are the armrest will shift out of position or rotate, and I am not a heavy guy by any means. Because of this, I find myself readjusting the armrests pretty frequently since they shift out of position a lot. -Lumbar Support: The lumbar support is a horizontal bar that you can adjust up and down. You do this by pushing/pulling the left and right sides of the bar up and down. However, they don't move smoothly and it requires applying a lot of force so it's hard to make small adjustments and it's hard to tell if you have the left/right sides lined up at the same height. Overall though, I find it doesn't provide that much support. It's not contoured support from the backrest and is just a bar that moves up and down. THE BAD -Build Quality: When I first got the chair, the build quality seemed pretty good. The armrests didn't rattle and the casters rolled across the floor really smoothly. But once I sat down, that's when I noticed the first big problem. There seems to be looseness between the base of the seat and the gas cylinder, so when I move in the chair, it makes a loud creaking noise. It makes a noise whenever I sit down or get up. It also makes a noise when I shift my position in the seat as well. This brings some concerns on how long this chair will last. -The seat is not flat: This is my biggest gripe about this chair. The sides of the seat curve upward. I find this to be uncomfortable in long sitting sessions. I bought this chair for home use so I don't have shoes on and sometimes cross my legs in the chair. But over long periods of sitting, this causes my hip joints to hurt because of the curvature of the seat. -Backrest tension not very adjustable: This is also pretty frustrating. The backrest tension isn't fully adjustable but instead comes with 3 preset levels. The knob for it is very cool though since it's adjustable from the side of the chair and solidly clicks into the 3 levels. But not being able to adjust the tension is pretty terrible for a $400 chair. The three settings are unlocked, unlocked with tension boost, and fully locked. Fully locked is as you'd expect and like sitting in a wooden dining room chair. Unlocked will lean all the way back with very little weight. Therefore tension boost (the middle setting) is probably the only setting you'll use, so I hope you like the preset tension. For me, the preset tension level isn't quite right. In a cheap chair, this is easily fixed by adjusting the tension. In this $400 chair, I'm stuck with it and can't adjust. Go figure. Bottom Line: I regret spending $400 on this chair. I find it hurts to sit in this for long periods of time because of the seat shape. The creaking noises are also concerning. If it's possible to return this, I definitely would... though I also don't have the original box anymore since it was too gigantic to keep in the apartment.

When I first got this chair I loved it. I am 6'-0" tall and it is impossible to find a comfortable task chair for a tall person that won't break the bank. I really thought this was it. Now that I've had it and have used it for a few months, every day the chair slowly lowers the seat. It is totally unnoticeable until a few hours have gone by and I readjust the seat height to lift it back up several inches. I have to do this multiple times a day. I wish there was a way to contact the manufacturer to troubleshoot the problem.

I looked for chairs specifically for gaming, and got alot of results for racing chairs converted for desk use. After some research, turns out that the best gaming chairs are just high profile office chairs. It's almost like they designed it for someone sitting down for long periods of time. Weird. Anyways, the chair is awesome. You can adjust the lumbar support, arm height, and pad position. Adjusting the chair height is super easy, as is locking it in place. It's ridiculously ergonomic, your back never leaves contact with the chair. The bottom pad lifts as you lean back and it's comfy af. Came fully put together, well packaged, no damage 3 days before it was supposed to. Money well spent.
