Description

The Steelcase Series 1 chair has a LiveBack™ flexor system in the backrest which conforms to your body and moves with you to support the spine as you change postures. The tilt mechanism is synchronized; the seat and back work in harmony with each other, keeping the body securely supported in the chair and feet firmly planted on the floor so you can recline without leaving your optimal zone for seeing and reaching your work. This model includes an adjustable seat depth, fully adjustable arms (raise up and down, pivot in and out, shift forward and back and side to side), adjustable lumbar, pneumatic seat height adjustment, recline tension adjustment (weight activated with adjustment and lock), flexing back with mesh upholstery, upholstered seat and wheels for carpet flooring. The seat features strong yet pliable foam which conforms to the body and creates pressure-free comfort. Flexible seat edge offers a bit of bend, right where you need it – relieving pressure points under your thighs. This chair will arrive unassembled and require some assembly; covered by Steelcase warranty.

The assembly was not the easiest thing I have ever done, but the end result was well worth the effort. The instructions were clear, but I don't see as well and am not as dexterous as I was 50 years ago. I am very happy with the support, especially the lumbar support, and I can sit much longer without any discomfort. The seat depth lever took me longer to find than it should have, the documentation seemed to show it more in the center than it was, but all the other adjustments were fine as in the docs. The swivel on the armrests is a little looser than I would like, but as I sit in it more the armrests seem to stay more in the same position than they did so it may be just a matter of me finding the position I prefer by letting the rest find its natural landing spot. Unlike my older office chairs, reclining never feels like I might go too far back, and the upright position where the chair normally is for working is as close to ideal as I have ever had. I would say it is well worth the money. It seems well engineered and well built. The fabric seat and mesh back seem as if they would be very durable, but time will tell. The seat is very comfortable and the range of adjustments should be adequate for almost everyone. I have been retired for about 20 years, and this chair is far better than any I had when I was working. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone. ... show more

This is a fantastic value, and feels great on my back. I decided to buy it after reading a review on Consumer Reports. "If you’re looking for great value, it’s hard to top this chair. In addition to scoring well for ergonomics, it happens to be the most comfortable model on this list. Our panel particularly admired the seat cushion and lumbar support. The armrests can be adjusted across a range of heights and, though attached to the backrest, tilting back as you recline, they still comfortably support your arms. However, the clearance between them is fixed and may be too narrow for some. For those who want more control, the manufacturer also offers this model with four-way adjustable armrests. The Series 1 does not have variable tilt locks or tilt stops for those who like to recline, but does offer three settings: fully upright, fully reclined, and a weight-activated option in between. You can also adjust the seat pan depth and the height of the lumbar support. The model requires some assembly, but it’s easy to do with the instructions included in the box. The controls are not labeled. They are, however, easy to use. Other notable features include an optional headrest and caster selection specific to your flooring." I was in the market for a new chair for some time before settling on this one. If you're looking at this, I'm guessing that, like me, you want a chair that's not cheaply made, but not top-of-the-line priced. I think this is a solid pick for that objective. The chair is incredibly easy to assemble, the seat is firm (but not hard), and it provides solid back support. The chair sits a bit lower than others I've had in the past, but as a 6'0 guy, I've had no issues—I can easily adjust to where my knees are level and still have plenty of space where the arms aren't bumping into the desk. The adjustable armrests are nice and comfortable enough, but the 4-d movement is a little annoying in my opinion (they don't lock into place—other than for height adjustments—so they have a tendency to slide around when you're working). I personally find the lumbar support comfortable and easy to adjust. But I've only had the chair for a month, so it might be too early to speak to whether it falls out like other reviewers have noted. I think the reclining settings are fine, but not great. You have the choice to be locked upright, resisted recline, or completely unrestricted. I would guess most people choose the middle option, and it's fine for what it is, but—unlike other chairs—you don't have the ability to customize how much resistance you want. You either like their settings, or you're out of luck. I'm personally satisfied with the amount of resistance it provides, but it's definitely something to be aware of if you're picky about that sort of thing. All in all, I'm happy with the chair. It might be a bit overpriced for what you're getting, but it's a safe pick for a solid office chair that (so far) feels built to last. ... show more

I have one of their Gesture Office chairs as my primary chair, and while excellent, I wanted another less expensive option for a nearby work room, rather than replacing an aging, much cheaper office chair with yet another cheap office chair that would give out after two or three years. So far I've been very impressed with this one, it is lighter yet still very solid, I especially like the adjustable arm rests, and it seems to have plenty of support. It's no Gesture, of course, but it's much better than any other chair I've had experience with over the last several decades, including some so-called 'gaming' chairs that retailed for nearly as much but didn't hold up at all.
