The Steelcase Series 1 chair has a LiveBack™ flexor system in the backrest which conforms to your body and moves with you to support the spine as you change postures. The tilt mechanism is synchronized; the seat and back work in harmony with each other, keeping the body securely supported in the chair and feet firmly planted on the floor so you can recline without leaving your optimal zone for seeing and reaching your work. This model includes an adjustable seat depth, height adjustable ONLY arms, pneumatic seat height adjustment, recline tension adjustment (weight activated with adjustment and lock), flexing back with mesh upholstery, upholstered seat and wheels for carpet flooring.The seat features strong yet pliable foam which conforms to the body and creates pressure-free comfort. Flexible seat edge offers a bit of bend, right where you need it – relieving pressure points under your thighs. First of all, I'm 5'4" with short legs and a long torso, so finding the perfect chair has always been a frustrating process. Buying a chair is a tricky process; one size does not fit all. But this one delivered both in aesthetics and functionality. Arms adjust up/down, chair seat can slide forward and back and locks into your preferred position. The seat height also adjusts for my shorter legs. I love the adjustable lumbar support as well as the reclining feature, which you can lock into place if you don't want the recline. My office is carpeted and the wheels glide easily over carpet without the endless scootching around and getting stuck like some chairs. My only complaint (and really it's not a complaint ... more of a non-feature) is the plastic arm rests, nothing that a pair of $15 arm cushions can't fix. It's a beautiful chair with a firm seat (I bought the avocado color). Love it! ... show more

The chair is comfortable, very easy to assemble and stylish. However, the left armrest is defective- does not hold a position and sinks all the way down. Since I am only 5 feet tall the chair is usable, though I will be contacting Steelcase to arrange for a replacement. But for such a well known brand and highly rated chair, one would expect quality control to be better. Another reviewer had the same issue, so it is clearly not unique. I did not want to spend any more than I did, but my HON Ignition 2 office chair at work is a better fit and Amazon has a very good price on it. ... show more

The video accompanying the chair suggests the armrests swivel and widen. They do not. I would have bought a different chair.

    • Defective, very difficult to return.

My wife bought this chair, the parts did not seem to fit together perfectly. The armrest adjustment switch does not work on one side, but it’s impossible to have known this until the chair is completely put together. When we tried to return it, they said it can’t be returned to Kohl’s, where we usually do our returns, it has to be disassembled and shipped back via UPS. Since the parts all snap into place, it is going to be complicated to take apart without special tools or breaking something. My wife says the chair seems like it would comfortable if she could adjust the armrest to the correct height. At this price, they should at least make sure everything works, and it should be easier to return. We will have to return it when we have time to take it apart, get it to fit in the box, drive all the way to UPS and then stand in line to return it. Fun. ... show more
