Description

Steelcase Gesture Office Chair - The first chair designed to support our interactions with today’s technologies. It was inspired by the movement of the human body and created for the way we work today. We didn't start with a chair design. We started by looking at the unique movements and gestures of the body. Like the human body, Gesture is designed as a system of synchronized interfaces that together provide customized support for any posture. A new sitting experience designed with a back and seat that move as a synchronized system moving with each user to provide continuous and persistent support. Arms move like a human arm which allows users to be supported in any position. Seat has comfort all the way to the edge with a flexible perimeter to allow users to sit in a range of positions. Arms and shoulders remain supported regardless of device being used. Designed to be quickly adjustable and takes into account various body types and sitting preferences.

  • Comfy but lacks lumbar
Color: Bluejay Fabric
Lacks lumbar adjustment support. Crazy on a thousand dollar chair. Otherwise controls are good and comfy for a long sit.

  • Design and ergonomic settings great but with major deficiencies
Color: Tangerine Fabric
Here is my take on this chair as a software developer spending long hours in it and owner of both Steelcase Leap and Humanscale Freedom chairs in the past. Pros: - The ergonomic settings are flexible and if you take the time to fine tune your sitting position, this chair does a great job holding your body in a comfortable position but letting you adjust the way you are sitting in small ways throughout the day. - It looks modern and nice. Cons: - The pressure relief on the seat cushion for a 200lb 6'1" person is defficient. It was fine for the first month or so, but once I broke in the cushion it feels like I bottom out just slightly and it creates pressure points. It's not as comfortable as a chair of this class should be for someone of my size (large but within the normal range for an adult male). I think if you are sub 180lbs, this would not be an issue. - I was really hoping the creaky noises that some people reported wouldn't be an issue. There is no problem or damage to the chair - the parts where the load from the back of the chair are transferred to the base just rub and creak. This is very annoying and I find myself not shifting my wait around as much as I should for comfort since if I stay still it doesn't creak. IMO I would never buy this chair again simply on this. So my take it that this is really close to being a great design, but to keep costs down they skimped on the materials design causing the comfort and noise issues. I would rather have spent $300-400 more and had a higher quality chair. I'm going to give this one to my wife who's Leap chair cushions are very compressed and get a new Freedom chair again since that has been my favorite chair over the years. ... show more

  • Get one
Color: Coconut Fabric
This arrived unannounced and thank God the fantastic deliveryman carried it up two flights of stairs for me - there are angels in this world. Once I removed the wrapping, I became uncertain, it looks so ... nothing. However, once I watched a video to figure out how to adjust it (no papers accompanied it), I settled in. It is elegant, unobtrusive, and comfortable, I love the fact that you can adjust the arm rests - very important for me because I'd experienced tennis elbow for months (it has gone since i got this chair and can now properly support my elbows). My partner sneered, you should have got a headrest, and at first I thought he was right - he wasn't. This supports you so well: lower back, arms, upperback, that a headrest is not necessary, if the spine is supported, comfort follows and pain disappears - or rather, that is my experience. I also go the coconut shade and had buyers remorse when unpacking it, thinking, I am sure it will get dirty: so far, so good, no problems. I am very happy with this chair. I should have got one months ago to deal with a life of endless Zoom meetings. ... show more

  • Terrible packaging damages fine product
Color: Nickel Fabric
Yesterday this much-awaited, much-needed chair (Steelcase Gesture in light color) was delivered promptly, first thing in the morning. I love everything about it: (1) it came fully-assembled, (2) the minimal knobs were easy to adjust (note: the tiny back stop lever attached to the rear back tension knob is vital for choosing 1 of 4 recline settings), (3) my back w/ its issues feels comfortingly and warmly nestled by the lumbar support, and (4) the 2nd recline setting allows me to sit back from computer work, leisure read (w/ legs up under desk), or think deep thoughts. HOWEVER, on unpacking the chair from the giant box, we discovered a deep compression mark across the right armrest (see photos). This seems to have been caused by pressure from the packing material--just a large empty cardboard box which evidently dug into the plastic armrest. This does not necessarily affect function, but for nearly $1,000, one would expect a pristine, unmarked product! Better packaging, perhaps molded styrofoam or the like, should have left no such damage. The box exterior also has no upright arrow indicators, and was delivered upside down. Who knows if it had been stored upside down, or what had been placed atop it along the way. I hope this packing concern is addressed. It marred an otherwise gorgeous, well-designed, and useful product. ... show more
