  • Fantastic chair for all-day comfort and support Fantastic chair for all-day comfort and support
Color: Graphite Gray Fabric
It's not easy to get excited about a desk chair. After all, the last place most of us want to be for hours on end is tied to our desks, building spreadsheets and presentations. After over twenty years of that, I, for one, would certainly rather do something else with my time. If you do have to spend a significant amount of time at your desk, however, it's awfully nice, even imperative, to be comfortable. The Steelcase Gesture chair has made me more comfortable at my desk than I have ever been, and I only wish that I had bought it sooner. A little background - about a year and a half ago, I was at a movie/TV set surplus sale and picked up two gently used Steelcase Amia chairs for $50 each, which was a tremendous bargain. I figured I could use a good quality desk chair at home for the rare day that I didn't go to the office, and my wife took the second one to the school where she teaches, and it served as a huge upgrade over the ridiculously unsupportive chair that her district provides to all teachers. Fast-forward 9 months, and we both start working from home, due to the pandemic. She brought her chair home from school, and we both worked pretty comfortably in these Amia chairs for 9 months. In-person learning eventually resumed, and so she took her chair back to school, leaving us with one at home. Recently, however, she's been doing more and more work from home, and it didn't seem right to have her use a dining chair, so I figured it was time for a new chair for myself, as I am still working from home all the time, with my Amia chair going to her for the few hours per week that she might need it. While I have always found the Amia pretty comfortable, she's liked it even more than I have; though it's better than the chair I have at my office, I've always felt that it could catch me a bit better, particularly in the lumbar area. It does have an adjustable lumbar support, but that honestly doesn't do a whole lot, and it tends to slide down from whatever position I set it in pretty quickly. So, I decided that if I was going to get a new chair, I'd truly try a different model, and given my prior good experience with Steelcase and excellent online reviews both here and elsewhere, I'd give the Gesture a try. The Gesture is, for me, so much more comfortable than the Amia, and I am exceptionally glad to have bought it. I have always preferred seating with pretty aggressive, or firm, lumbar support, so I was initially a bit concerned about the Gesture's lack of an adjustable lumbar support (available as an option from Steelcase, but not on the chair that Amazon stocks), but now that I have the chair, I'm convinced that it is not necessary. The chair catches my entire back just right, with ample firm lumbar support which moves with me throughout the day. I love that I can recline just a few degrees from vertical and the chair holds me there, without my needing to exert continuous pressure or tense my core muscles. Basically, the chair virtually senses where you want to be, and it stays in that position. Deeper reclines are also quite comfortable and stable. The analog seat-depth adjustment (rather than just four or five fixed settings) is a really nice touch, particularly since it can be changed while you're sitting. And the adjustability of the armrests is second-to-none; the Amia already does this pretty well, but the Gesture does it quite a bit better. For years, I have had issues with pain in my left shoulder and lower neck that I know come from putting too much weight on my elbows, forearms and wrists while sitting at my desk. Those issues have disappeared almost entirely since I got the Gesture, which tells me that I have managed to dial in just the right armrest position, which, for me, means that they're pulled in pretty close to my body and as far away from the edge of the desk as possible, allowing me to tuck my legs deep under the desk and not reach very far for the keyboard, keeping my arms level with the desk, lightly supported by the armrests. The whole setup is just extremely comfortable. Some people have noted that the armrests slope to the outside to such a degree that their arms sometimes slide off, but I have not experienced that at all, nor have I found the armrest material is at all rough, which is another complaint I have seen. Perhaps Steelcase has changed the armrests slightly since those reviews were written. I've noticed that some people have complained that the cushioning is insufficient, but I have not found that to be the case. It's firm, but for me, at least, is in no way inadequate; quite the opposite, really, as it's very supportive, which is essential for good ergonomics. I wouldn't want living-room couch-style cushioning in a desk chair. Build quality is exceptional, and the chair weighs a ton. I have little doubt that it will last me for many years. The Graphite color is a bit lighter than it appears in Amazon's pictures, at least on my screen. When the chair arrived, I discovered that it's exactly the same fabric and color that we already have on our Amia chairs. Prior to ordering, I thought that Nickel might be the better match, but Graphite was a bit less expensive and could be delivered more quickly, so it was a pleasant surprise to discover that Graphite is indeed what we already had. At this point, the only outstanding question is what I will do if I eventually have to return to the office. I hope to continue working from home indefinitely, but if they call me back full-time, I will likely take this chair in with me, as it's much better than what have there. If I end up working a hybrid schedule, with a few days at home and a few at the office, I might even have to invest in another Gesture so I have one in both locations. It really is that good! ... show more

  • 8 month review: I use the Gesture at home and the Aeron on my office days. I prefer the Gesture.
Color: Graphite Gray Fabric
**PROS AND CONS** **PROS** -Unmatched adjustability in high end office chairs -Very solid arm rests no matter how you adjust them -Can tilt back VERY far compared to most office chairs -Super flexible seat and back lets you maneuver freely without feeling inhibited by your chair. Being able to sit however you want and still feel comfortable after a long day is BIG. -Very helpful customer support. They DO in fact honor their 12 yr warranty and WILL take care of your investment if you have a problem (can personally vouch). -Feels brand new after 8 months of heavy use, no sign of the foam cushions collapsing. They use a very durable dense foam and not cheap memory foam. Cloth looks mint and no signs of wear or loose threads. -Aesthetically pleasing **CONS** -Foam/cushioning on the thinner side, but not necessarily uncomfortable since your weight is very evenly distributed across the chair. -Will need to put down some lithium grease where the seat pan meets the back structure; otherwise it will squeak after ~3 months. -No aftermarket headrest options since the non-headrest version doesn’t have mounting points for it. -Cloth seats. Not a big deal for me but I have seen complaints of people getting hot in their chair. -Very heavy. 80lb chair is not easy carry up the stairs if you plan on moving soon. ========== Both are very good chairs. Biggest difference is that the Gesture is more flexible in seat pan and the back support. Makes it a lot easier to move around, reach for things, lean in and out however I want in and in any direction. I can sit any way want; legs crossed, legs on desk, leg up on chair, slouched or sit upright and maintain a good posture if I'm trying to get work done. My movement or how I sit doesn't ever feel inhibited by the Gesture. The adjustable arms are amazing and very adjustable. Super easy to adjust however you want and usually I find myself adjusting them when I'm wanting sit back in my chair to watch a video or when I need to spend the day typing things out. On the other hand, the Aeron is more of a "rigid" chair. It forces you to more or less sit upright and maintain a better posture because the frame hugs you more compared to the Gesture. It's not easy to sit in any other posture besides the *ideal* one. Seat pan and backframe feel more conforming to the body and I'd have no problem having a productive day in this chair. The adjustable arms are good, but come nowhere near the adjustability of the Gesture. Good office chair if the only thing you're doing is churning out emails in a cubicle. Can’t go wrong if you decide to pick either one. Personally I went with Gesture because I value the additional flexibility it provides and honestly it’s lot more aesthetically appeasing than the Aeron. Also worth mentioning their customer support and warranty programs are AMAZING. I had a problem with the chair being unbalanced and within 2 weeks I had a full replacement delivered to my doorstep at $0 cost. Only regret I have is not getting the headrest version—which I’ve heard is pretty good. ... show more

  • Stop and behold - the chair of all chairs! Step right up and claim your comfort!
Color: Tangerine Fabric
The moment my butt touched the Gesture I was in love. If you sit in a chair for as long as I do, it's an investment in yourself and health. Don't put a price tag on that. If your back is hurting or you're uncomfortable for 70% of the day don't hesitate because of sticker shock, just buy it. If you hate it, send it back. If the thing comes broken, send it back. If the arms are wack, send it back. Just to cover some common questions I had during my search for a new chair before jumping into the whole review. - I am roughly 6'2 & 180 lbs. - The back went up to the middle of my neck. - Seat is very adjustable and my legs were comfy. No weird pressure points whatsoever in the seat. - Chair arms ensure there are virtually no issues for arm height or width. I have lanky arms so this was super nice. - I sit all kinds of weird throughout the day and it adjusted to allllllllll of the positions. - It has several tilt settings and boy are they perfect. Freakin' unmatched in my opinion. - Has a great range of height. I haven't been short in a while but my partner is roughly 5'8 and had no issues getting comfortable/sitting properly. - The orange color is top-notch. Very unique and I had plenty of compliments within days of owning it. - I'm using 3 computers throughout my day, sometimes 4, and there's no issues moving between them as needed. The arms really do help in more ways than you think. - I have an L-shaped desk. - You can't beat a 12-year warranty. - Something noteworthy: thousands of people & how they sit were studied to design this chair, it's comfort is unmatched. - I purchased this model: ASIN: B016OIEXE0. The pros: Hands down one of the absolute best chairs my as..s. has ever sat on. I was extremely skeptical about spending $1k on a chair. But. I spend nearly 12 hours a day on my bum and I started having significant pain in my lower back, shoulders, and leg numbness. I get up plenty during those hours to stretch and walk around - at least 1 to 2 times an hour but that simply isn't enough with the amount of time I spend at my desk. Since a good bit of my desk-time is also spent on Amazon.com I was able to use their "5-monthly payments" (no credit check/approval needed, no fees, etc.) to split up the payments. That pretty much made it to where I could not pass this chair up. Within one day of using the chairI was -!-sleeping-!- better! I found myself sitting properly, comfortably and not forced. From my experience, depending on your preferred lumbar support, you may need to opt for the model that has the adjustable lumbar support (ASIN: B08KL9JMVB). For me, that's not an issue and the model without the lumbar adjustability has plenty of support as-is since you can move the seat forward and back. Now.. After all of my praise lets get to the expectations of what comes with a $1k chair. 1. I noticed the right side of the seat "wiggled" and kind of made a clanking noise within the first few days. Not a squeaking like some comments have mentioned coming from the backrest when leaning back. It became more and more noticeable as I used it. Eventually, when I went to move the seat forward with the adjustment knob the right side of the chair didn't move the same as the left. There was a slight delay and then a 'catch' - I equated it to an issue with either the track or what's holding the seat to the track was loose or jarred out of place. Eventually I reached out to Steelcase for help - not the best support experience - they suggested to throw some wd-40 on it but after clarifying the issue there were at least honest with me. They told me it would most likely be a better option to return the chair to Amazon because a warranty claim would take at minimum 3 weeks vs a quick return to Amazon for a replacement. 2. I thought I was just a bit off with my arm adjustments or it was potentially the leveling of my desk being off but the right arm also was slightly lower than the left. I had a couple of people try it out and even took some measurements - sure enough, it was lower, even when adjusted to the highest and lowest setting. It wasn't drastic but just enough to grab my attention after a few weeks of use. 3. It comes fully assembled. Steelcase... Why? Just why... I understand it is a unique build and sure, the arms might throw a few people off if it was assembled at home, but there's no need for it to come fully assembled. It's heavy asf. From my impression - that contributes to about 90% of the problems reported about this chair. I really believe that my issues may have even been caused by shipping mishandling - and not necessarily at the fault of the delivery drivers but because it's 75 pounds and fully assembled. The packaging wasn't all that great either, not what I expected for a fully assembled product at least. So now where am I now with my Steelcase Gesture? I returned it three days ago. Rolled it into a UPS store and paid them $50 so they would deal with the packaging and getting it back to Amazon because that massive box had long since left my apartment. I had full intentions of going home and ordering another Gesture (with a headrest this time). However, I'm giving the Steelcase Amia a try - it'll be delivered in two days. It was a toss up between the Gesture and the Amia to begin with so I felt it was only right to try it as well. It also had similar reviews. It's also roughly about $500 cheaper and if it keeps my tushy comfy, my back from dying, and legs feeling like legs, I may just stick with it. BUT if the Amia does not live up to the Gesture experience - it'll be carried down three flights of stairs and rolled into UPS as well. Then I'll have a nice Amazon delivery driver carry a new Gesture chair up a few days after. The next Gesture will be the model with a neck rest though, I enjoyed sitting in it so much that I was watching movies and would 'kick back' so a neck rest would be nice - like mentioned, the back of the chair only came up to my middle/lower neck so I expect the neck rest to be exactly where I'd like it to be. With all of that out of the way, pay attention to this statement . . . that process with UPS and new Gestures will repeat until I get a chair that has no issues - or until @Amazon tells me to cut it out. The chair has a 12 year warranty so I'm less concerned about the long-haul (or a three week process for warranty claim, when have warranty claims ever been fast??), but the first 30 days are crucial for any new purchase. The only reason an Amia is on the way vs a new Gesture is essentially simple curiosity and giving my dollar a run for its money (ha). Low-key, I'm kinda hoping the experience doesn't match up to the Gesture ;) I also have seen more issues in reviews of particular colors (lines in the arm rests - both versions of gray) - so choose wisely, it may also save you a good bit of $ to pick another. Some colors were over a $150 difference which is part of why I went with the orange + it looks pretty awesome, especially in person! Additionally, @Amazon has a 30-day return window for a reason, please use it vs throwing a tantrum in the comments. I understand $1k is a lot to throw around and certain expectations come with that price tag but there's a whole lot that happens between the factory and your doorstep, especially when the product is fully assembled. Again @Steelcase, figure out a way to ship this thing NOT fully assembled, might help tick some of these ratings up a bit, for real. Like.... start opening the boxes now and figure it out. Funny enough, I actually would not order one of these directly from Steelcase because I'm sure their returns process would most likely be a pain. @Amazon is doing you a solid - now do your customers one @Steelcase. ... show more

  • Pretty good chair
Color: Graphite Gray Fabric
The chair is OK. It’s not the most comfortable. It’s well made. I’ve had it for a few weeks and the seat may be getting a little softer but it’s pretty stiff. The arms move enough to sort of get them out of the way if you don’t want to rest your elbows on them. It would be nice if they could move more out of the way. ... show more

  • Genuine, new & built like a tank!
Color: Bluejay Fabric
Given the low price (compared to buying it directly from Steelcase), I was concerned that the chair might not be genuine, or might be a returned item/factory second. But, it is clearly genuine, brand new and built like a tank! It arrived ahead of schedule by 4 days and was VERY well packaged (I don't see how the item could be damaged in shipping unless the shipper damaged it on purpose, and even then it would be difficult...really almost OVER protective packaging). It is a VERY attractive chair (beyond nice looking...really a beautiful chair) and pretty comfortable...though it wasn't the "magic" comfort like someone might imagine with a chair this expensive. ** Note: my original impression was based on how it felt with my initial adjustments. Once I learned how to better fine tune it for me (and my body settled into it), I found the chair VERY comfortable. ** I am 5' 11", 210 pounds and 31" inseam. I've seen a lot of praise for the seat forward/rearward adjustment, but I found I have to adjust mine as far forward as possible...and still there is about 2-1/2" between the inside of my knee and the forward edge of the seat. I don't believe I have abnormally long thighs so it might be a problem with someone with really long legs (to be clear, not saying it's a problem for me, but I do have the adjustment maxed). The armrest adjustments are pretty amazing, however I wish they moved another inch or more forward. The entire chair is VERY well built with all quality materials, including the cloth covering which I expect to hold up well even after a lot of use. Rollers work really smoothly on my carpeted floor. Bottom line...is this chair worth $1100+? I think it is. This chair should last me 12-25 years so if you spread the cost across that time span, it's actually less expensive than the cheap $250 chairs that are shot after about 3 years. * Bottom line though: if I had it to do again, I think I would purchase a Haworth Soji to save several hundred dollars (while still getting a 12 year warranty chair). ... show more

  • Leap chair compared to Gesture - owners perspective
Color: Graphite Gray Fabric
I had a Leap chair V2 for 10 years and gave it to my wife to use at her office. The Gesture was expected to be an upgrade as I bought it, I spend very long hours sitting at work and at the PC at home. Reviews of the Gesture are outstanding for diverse sitting positions. In any case both my wife and I are getting older and have a few back issues, and we both need good quality/supportive chairs. She loves the Leap so it's hers now. If I had not already enjoyed the great support and comfort of the Leap chair for years, I think I would be much more impressed with the Gesture. The Leap chair is that good even after all these years. The Gesture looks more high tech and modern while the Leap is more of a boring generic look, but I think in some ways the Leap chair is more comfortable for normal sitting. The Gesture is comfortable and supportive and as advertised it shines when you want to lean back in the chair (very smooth and supportive when doing this, one thing I think it is better at than the leap). Also the Gesture arm adjustability is superior. I think it's a great chair... but two things, I think the padding is a tad more comfortable in the Leap chair in the back and seat. Not to say the Gesture is not comfortable, it is. Also sometimes I almost feel like the Gesture seat bottom feels like it is tilted forward like I am sliding out of it. Just slightly. But this may simply be that after ten years in the Leap chair I have bonded with it - and after more time in the Gesture I will not even remember a difference. The arms on the Gesture are a stiffer surface and they tilt outward just a little and can make my arms almost slip off, which sometimes annoys me - as I was used to the solidly level feel of the arms on the Leap. Probably they are designed that way for a reason that I have not discovered yet. But I will say this, when I don't really focus on the differences and just use the Gesture chair, it just WORKS. It is intuitive and very easy to sit in different ways. I had to work 20 hours straight earlier this week, spent it all in the Gesture chair, and not a single complaint on how my back felt afterward or anything else. Including the fact that I never felt overheated in the chair (cloth version). Which ultimately I think is a pretty good test. And having done the same in the Leap many times it also passes that test. Which would I say is "better"? It's hard to say, the Gesture wins in the highly and easily adjustable arms, and smooth and supportive leaning back. The Leap feel just a tiny bit more padded in the back and seat. If forced I would say the Gesture is an improvement but not in every aspect. ... show more

Color: Coconut Fabric
I love this chair firm, keeps you upright and very comfortable. Note: it’s super heavy so when you receive it be careful and get some help moving it to the location. Good news is it’s constructed solidly. I brought the whole fabric so need to be careful not to spill anything.

  • OMG it squeaks OMG it squeaks
Color: Licorice Fabric
I usually don't try to leave bad reviews and is the product is meh, I let it be. However I pay upwards of $1K so I have to be honest and make sure other people know what they are getting into. I was debating against a Herman Miller vs Steelcase do to the cost. I thought that a few hundred dollars saving was going to pay off but I should have spent more and go for the Herman Miller. I bough this chair on April 2021 and is now September 2021. I use it at the office everyday. I wanted something nice because of chronic back pain and prolonged seating. I'm 6'0" and 240 lbs. Because of my height there is usually not good enough support since chairs are made for shorter people and creates bad posture for me. I bought the rest of the staff in the office Herman Millers that were a little more economic but they are elated. So the first thing it squeaks, OMG it squeaks. It annoys me that such an expensive chair at the 5 months mark squeaks like a 2 year old chair. Because I can't find comfort on it, I have to shift weight and people knows when I'm moving because IT SQUEAKS. So annoying. Next comfort: It is pretty adjustable, but the lumbar support is free floating. For another $200-300 dollars they have and added lumbar support but I initially thought it would be fine. Well, no, it's not good enough so I had to add a stick (see photo) to lock the lumbar support in place. Also, when I said that it is pretty adjustable is everything but the seat cushion. The seat adjust back and forward but it does not adjust the angle of the cushion so when you lean back, the butt slides off the chair or it becomes painful because the weight is distributed in the wrong vector. I would recommend that if you can afford it spend a little more and get a trusted brand. Did I mentioned that it squeaks? ... show more
