  • Jorgensen's planes are values above their price!
After having already purchased Jorgensen's block and trim plane. I really like the build and and operation of those two. When I saw the offering of the four planes at a good price I decided to get the 4 plane set that included the larger #5 jack plane, #4 smooth plane, block plane and trim plane. I now have a nicer extra set of the two smaller planes in my installation set of tools. They needed just a bit of clean up on my Arkansas stone and they all cut cleanly with a minimum of effort. I like the knurled knobs and the smooth machining is a pleasure. ... show more

  • A good plane especially for the price
Overall this is a very good plane. I bought it because it is a bit heavier than my Millers Falls #5 and I planned to use it mostly with my shooting board, but (see the picture) as I've been building a table using only hand tools, I find myself reaching for the Jorgensen instead of the Millers Falls. If you are unfamiliar, Millers Falls was a competitor of Stanley and made planes of equal quality. Out of the box this plane is ok to use; mostly flat sole and pretty sharp iron. For a casual user or rough carpentry, it would be ok. It took me about 3 minutes to get the sole flat. The left side (viewed from the rear/tote end of the plane) was square to the sole and flat. The right side was not square and that's the side you need to use in a shooting board if you are right handed. It took almost ten minutes to get the right side square to the sole and flat. A bit of a hassle, but no worse than several vintage Stanleys I restored. The blade back was flat and the 25 degree bevel was decently sharp. I was able to go straight to a 1000 grit stone, then 3000, and then honing strop; no need to flatten the back or grind the bevel to start. Total setup time was under 30 minutes and it performed as well as my Millers Falls #5 and Stanley #4. You can see the picture where I was working on a table leg and comparing the two #5s with a Stanley #4 in the background. I don't know how it would compare to a Lie Nelson or similar high end plane, but for less than $100 including tax and shipping it's an excellent alternative to finding, buying, and restoring a vintage hand plane. ... show more

  • Flat sole, sharp iron, usable right out of box.
Almost flat sole. Razor sharp iron. Took amazing shavings straight out of the box, only adjustment required was to close up the mouth a little but it’s bedrock style so that was as simple as turning the adjustment screw. Cannot recommend enough.

  • These are from all 3 Jorgensen planes after tuning.
You can't beat the price for what you get if you know and understand how to tune a plane. You don't need a Veritas or an expensive Lie- Nielsen planes. Jorgensen is a great product. I have the #4 smoother plane, the 60-1/2 low angle block plane, plus I just bought the Jorgensen #5 Jack plane. I have another manufacturers chisel plane which rounds out all that you need. These are the 4 planes that can do everything. Jorgensen has 3mm thick premium blades that take me about 15 minutes with 2500 wet and dry sandpaper and nothing else with a strop to insanely sharpen. First I always start off sanding the base and sides using a permanent marker and the 2500 grit sandpaper with the plane assembled with everything. Jorgensen sent my plane with the blade recessed and ready to check the base and sides. that took about 4 minutes and then I went to the blades which they sent me a spare on Amazon. I lapped the blades, used the 2500 sandaper at the 25 degree bevel and then honed the edge at 30 degrees and then stropped the blades like always. It took me about 3 minutes to adjust the frog for the mouth and the planer blades adjustment for shaving. I adjust the chip breaker about a 32 secondth of an inch back from the blade and I also adjust the mouth with the frog adjustments to approximatelt 1/32. This frog is different. It has to set screws on the left and right at the rear of the frog and after loosening the set adjustment screws you just use the center frog screw to set the mouth of the planer blade. I have 4 great planes at $300. My chisel plane is a RocklerBench Dog chisel plane at $85 so $215 for the other three great essential planes. Learn how to sharpen the blades and adjust a plane and Jorgensens ar a jewel. ... show more

  • Good value for price
Acceptable build quality for the price. Needs to be tuned before of course but this is true for most new planes.

  • Excellent value planes from Jorgensen
I ordered this in “Like New” condition. In truth, the packaging was damaged and a small area of paint was chipped off. But I had a hunch that nothing was wrong with it and it made beautiful shavings without me so much as checking that it was actually tight. These Jorgensen planes and pull saws are such a great value that I am basically collecting them all. I’m glad I didn’t have to take a chance on the old planes the scalpers are all selling on eBay for hundreds of dollars. ... show more

  • Surprisingly good
The quality of this #5 plane is surprisingly good. I took it out of the box, ran the blade forward, and was able to take shavings right away. Then I flattened the back of the blade (it wasn't bad), sharpened the edge, and put it back in. It cut really well. The tote and knob screws were slightly loose, as were the frog hold-down screws. The sole was as near to perfectly flat as I could measure. I will probably lap it later, but it doesn't cut like there is a significant curve to the sole. This plane has the frog adjustment screw. The lateral adjustment is an actual bearing. Screw-down blade cap, not a lever cap, but it's fine. The adjustment wheel is slightly small, at 1-1/8 inches, and has less than a turn of backlash.. Blade is 1/8 inch thick. This is an outstanding bargain. It took a long time to arrive; I assume the vendor reshipped it from China. Still, it was worth the wait. If all the Jorgensen planes are this good, you can't go wrong. ... show more

  • Great plane
After reading other reviews I decided to try this plane. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. It was ready right out of the box and worked wonders for flatting my workbench top. I'm not a plane expert but for my needs it beat paying hundreds more for a good plane.
