The quality of this #5 plane is surprisingly good. I took it out of the box, ran the blade forward, and was able to take shavings right away. Then I flattened the back of the blade (it wasn't bad), sharpened the edge, and put it back in. It cut really well. The tote and knob screws were slightly loose, as were the frog hold-down screws. The sole was as near to perfectly flat as I could measure. I will probably lap it later, but it doesn't cut like there is a significant curve to the sole. This plane has the frog adjustment screw. The lateral adjustment is an actual bearing. Screw-down blade cap, not a lever cap, but it's fine. The adjustment wheel is slightly small, at 1-1/8 inches, and has less than a turn of backlash.. Blade is 1/8 inch thick. This is an outstanding bargain. It took a long time to arrive; I assume the vendor reshipped it from China. Still, it was worth the wait. If all the Jorgensen planes are this good, you can't go wrong.

You can't beat the price for what you get if you know and understand how to tune a plane. You don't need a Veritas or an expensive Lie- Nielsen planes. Jorgensen is a great product. I have the #4 smoother plane, the 60-1/2 low angle block plane, plus I just bought the Jorgensen #5 Jack plane. I have another manufacturers chisel plane which rounds out all that you need. These are the 4 planes that can do everything. Jorgensen has 3mm thick premium blades that take me about 15 minutes with 2500 wet and dry sandpaper and nothing else with a strop to insanely sharpen. First I always start off sanding the base and sides using a permanent marker and the 2500 grit sandpaper with the plane assembled with everything. Jorgensen sent my plane with the blade recessed and ready to check the base and sides. that took about 4 minutes and then I went to the blades which they sent me a spare on Amazon. I lapped the blades, used the 2500 sandaper at the 25 degree bevel and then honed the edge at 30 degrees and then stropped the blades like always. It took me about 3 minutes to adjust the frog for the mouth and the planer blades adjustment for shaving. I adjust the chip breaker about a 32 secondth of an inch back from the blade and I also adjust the mouth with the frog adjustments to approximatelt 1/32. This frog is different. It has to set screws on the left and right at the rear of the frog and after loosening the set adjustment screws you just use the center frog screw to set the mouth of the planer blade. I have 4 great planes at $300. My chisel plane is a RocklerBench Dog chisel plane at $85 so $215 for the other three great essential planes. This plane is very well-made for the price, with a dead-flat sole and solid design, but the design of the frog and cap-iron (aka chip-breaker) are such that you have to set the cap-iron several mm back from the edge to advance the blade enough to cut. That's not good for a plane that might be used for smoothing or jointing. When I bought this I already had the Jorgensen 4 and love it. It's a terrific budget plane, capable of first-rate results with a little tuning. The big difference between the 4 and this plane is that they've redesigned the sole and frog to use a "Bed Rock" configuration, meaning that the frog can be adjusted with the blade installed. That's a great thing, but in so doing they seem to have increased the distance between the sole and the depth-adjuster tab (the thing that engages the slot in the cap-iron) without making a corresponding change to the cap-iron. The result is that the cap-iron has to be set back several mm from the blade edge in order for the blade to protrude far enough to cut. I want my jack planes to function as long smoothers, and to do that I need to be able to set the cap-iron within ~0.2 mm of the cutting edge. That's impossible with this plane. Jorgensen also had problems with the initial run of the 4, so I suggest waiting and seeing with this plane. It should be easy enough for them to change the cap-iron to move the adjuster slot back, and that would fix the issue (though it would make the cap-iron incompatible with the 4, so they might want to change the frog or the adjuster yolk instead).

This plane sat on the shelf for a bit, and when I took it out and tuned it up, I noticed that one of the frog set screws and one of the pins had a machining defect - the set screw wouldn’t sit cleanly in the seat on the peg, so that side would loosen up and chatter in use. I filed the screw down a bit, messed with it, to no avail. Naturally, I was five days outside of Amazon’s return window. I reached out to Pony Jorgensen support on Friday night and a new, stable and tight #5 jack plane was left on my doorstep this afternoon. Excellent product support. New one has been sharpened up and mostly tuned, no chatter or slipping to observe. Very happy with their willingness to stand by their products, and all of my other PJ products (a #4 smoothing plane, several crosscut and joinery saws) are holding up just fine against daily hobby use.

Came well packaged, very clean and well put together. Sharp and flat. This is my 3rd plane from Jorgensen and I'm not disappointed. I performed the necessary tuning and put up some fantastic shavings. Even came with a second blade (they are thick 01). I even love the orange 🧡

Excellent! This plane cut smooth and clean with minimal tuning and everything can be adjusted without disassembly. Everything about it seems a little sturdier than normal. I have probably found the last no. 5 plane I will ever need to buy.

Defective device. Arrived clearly used and not in working order. The lever cap adjustment was stripped and unable to stabilize blade and chip breaker assembly. This made the planer useless. Had to return.
