  • Pretty impressive performance
This is nicely packaged set of router bits. You get 3 types: 2 upcut, 2 downcut and 1 compression neatly protected in their own sleeves and all 5 can be stored in the stiff plastic container they come in. The photo on the container looks nothing like the contents(see photo), only the middle bit resemble what you get. Regardless, no loose bits floating around the drawer. All of them are 1/4" shanks with 1" of cutting edge. As always, I put a caliper on them and they are spot on with no deviations in the shanks roundness or diameter (no caliper photos). The edges are very sharp and the whole bit is milled from a carbide blank. When used with an edge guide or installed in a router table router, these can serve as edge trimmers in a pinch when you haven't got a flush trim bit. I'll use the downcut in a router with the good face of the material up or the upcut when the good face is below. In a router table it's the opposite. The compression bit is used when shearing across both faces. These spiral cut have a tip that you can plunge which sets them apart in my arsenal of 1/4" router bits. I tried these on both, quality Baltic Birch and less expensive construction grade, plywood. I used the upcut bit in my router table to shear off 1/16" to see the effects. In both case, I got nice clean cuts; see the annotated photos. No need to lay down painter's tape or pre-score to get this result. Just awesome! I have to admit, they did better than any double-fluted straight bit. I didn't bother to do the downcut in a handheld router. The last 2 photos is the effect of the compression cutter plunged in for a slot in a 1/4" thick piece of hardboard; a little sanding will eliminate the "fuzzies" but not as impressive as the up/down spiral cut bits. These will be well used for a variety of operations in my woodworking shop. Having 1 extra of each of the higher use ones (up/down cut) is a plus. I will see how long they retain their edge; for my trials they did a great job and at the price point they are certainly a bargain. ... show more

  • Superb quality
The media could not be loaded. This set is called 'Spiral Router Bits' and each of the bits is designed to act in a certain way. Two of them are designed for down cuts, which means that the bit leaves a clean top edge but a rough bottom edge. Two others of them are up cut bits, which means that the bit leaves a smooth bottom edge but a rough top edge. The fifth and last bit is a compression bit, which is supposed to leave both top and bottom edges clean and neatly cut. The correct action as described depends on the bit being used in a steady manner with no variation or shaking during the cut. So while these *could* be used in a hand-held router, the results would not be as neat as could be. The proper use of these bits is either in a table top, securely mounted router, or in a CNC router. A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) router is a computer-controlled cutting machine which typically mounts a hand-held router as a spindle which is used for cutting various materials, such as wood, composites, metals, plastics, glass, and foams. The advertising says that these are 'Solid carbide' spiral router bits. Solid carbide bits are made from tungsten carbide, a compound of carbon and tungsten. This material provides faster cutting speed, more durability, and longevity. Uncoated solid carbide bits, like these appear to be, are intended for the highest accuracy and longest tool life. They are harder, stronger, and more wear resistant than high-speed steel, cobalt steel, and carbide-tipped bits. Carbide bits retain a sharp, hard edge at high temperatures for the best performance on hard and abrasive material. These bits require rigid tool-holding to prevent breakage and should not be used in hand-held drilling applications. The price for this set may seem high, but anyone familiar with high-quality, solid carbide bits will recognize the outstanding value offered here. The approximate price for one 1/4" uncoated carbide bit from various well-known tool companies is around $30. ... show more

  • Impressive cuts on my CNC
Just recently completed a 3-D carve project on my Genmitsu and was very pleased with the results of these bits. After dialing in the feed and plunge rates, the cuts were smooth and bits are still sharp after massive area depth cuts. These will definitely be my goto bits for my future projects. I downloaded the feed & speed chart from SpeTool's website and imported it into my Carveco Maker software making it super simple to use them. ... show more

  • Sharp, clean-cutting plunge bits
Although these will probably find their primary audience among CNC users, I’ve been testing them as plunge bits on my Makita trim router. I can’t yet speak to their longevity but in my testing, they plunge easily, cut quickly and leave very clean surfaces in their wake. I’ve used them on multiple woods including some very old driftwood cedar which, when routed with a bit of insufficient sharpness tends to look and feel like ragged polar fleece. Again, edges were smooth and clean, requiring very little finish work after. I don’t do production work, just a DIY woodworking hobbyist. If they fail prematurely or don’t give adequate performance over time, I will come back and update this review. Full Disclosure: I acquired this as a Vine user.
