I smoke cigars, and travel almost every week for work. As you might know, TSA doesn’t allow torch lighters. Sure, I come across cigar lounges at the places I visit, but some places does not. This lighter can be taken apart and can follow you. The lighter inside is a regular “bic” style lighter. The outside pieces actually transform the bic lighter into a torch. I just put the bic lighter in my pocket (which is TSA approved), and the other pieces in my checked luggage. TSA did an inspection on one flight. They did not confiscate the pieces of the lighter. It does have its quirks. Sometimes it doesn’t light on the first try. I had to turn down the adjustment knob on the lighter itself (it wouldn’t light). Some regular lighters can fit, but the round bic lighters does not. The lighters are refillable, and lasts me ~2/3 days. I have been on several trips, and this works great. I’m sure that something will break. If/when that happens, I will purchase it again.

Got tired of replacing expensive torch lighters that would have issues after a few months. I always bled the lighters before each refill and they still had sparking or flow issues. Some random YouTube video recommended this one and I grabbed one. Been using it for a few years now and now I'm the one recommending it to people. I bought a 50 pack of jewel lighters to go with it so I have plenty of refills. The lighter eventually stops working when the fuel gets low, but you can remove the lighter and still use it as a soft flame lighter until it's finished.

I used to have a torch like this years ago that was yellow. It worked great and lasted forever until the inside got wore out and I had to put a piece of a cigarette box inside so the scripto lighter would make contact with the trigger that pushed the gas button down. Thought I'd get this newer model and try it out and it cost $10 more than the old version and you have to click it about 10 times before it will light. never lights on the first try. but after it does finally light it keeps burning for about 10 seconds after you let go of the the button. doesn't matter if you have the scripto lighter inside turned all the way down or all the way up and that's the only setting for the flame. this is definitely not worth $27 and I would never buy another one or recommend anyone else puchase one either. can't believe I paid almost $30 for this junk.

VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE TOP. I HAD TO PRY IT OFF WITH A FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER AND SHAVE DOWN THE TWO 1" STRIPS OF PLASTIC ON THE BASE. VERY DIFFICULT TO PRESS ACTUATOR SLIDE BUTTON. I REMOVED THE TWO SCREWS, LIFTED OFF THE CAP, DROPPED OUT THE BUTTON, 90 DEG. ANGLED METAL ACTUATOR AND IN THE COIL SPRING BELOW IT. I PUT A DROP OF OIL IN THE LITTLE RECTANGULAR TRIGGER UNIT, REASSEMBLED WITHOUT THE SMALL SPRING AT THE BOTTOM. WITH THESE MODS IT IS MUCH EASIER TO REMOVE THE BASE THAT HOLDS THE LIGHTER AS WELL AS PRESS THE ACTUATOR BUTTON. WORKS VERY GOOD NOW. I ALSO CUT A SMALL PIECE OF STIFF FOAM, GLUED IT ONTO THE BUTTON FOR COMFORT.

A bit tight out of box but became much smoother after a few pulls. Very smart and versatile design which makes ordinary disposable lighters jet torches. The refillable lighter come with it can also take butane gas directly from a long gas canister, or from the mountain gas canister via a converter. However maybe due to my human error, I found the gas spilled to my hand was as much as, if not even more, than the gas filled into the lighter when I was using a long gas canister to refill it. The torch works well as described and the flame is blue and hot. My palm can feel the heat from about 5 inches (12cms) away which tells. The plastic shell seems thick which hopefully is durable. Cons? A bit large and not cheap. If you just want to have a refillable jet torch, there are brands like Clipper, which makes metal ones at cheaper price, and of much smaller size. Or if you want to have a jet torch that is refillable and extendable, then Soto's Pocket Torch XT would be good for you, at pretty much the same price. Unless you have many disposable lighters at home that are in the right diameter, and you want to turn them into jet torches, which I don't know why, this thing is a nice toy to have and certainly has its use but would not be my first choice if what I need is a tool, which is not to say it can't do the job, just not the more straightforward option for the purpose.

I love these things. Handy, I tell you what. Received one as a gift a few years ago. Thought I had lost it. In a panic, I ordered another. Then I found the original. All the better though. I want to keep one in all my vehicles. If you need fire quick. Indispensable. I use them for heat shrink tubing a lot. Or melting ends on rope/cord. I reach for one at least once a week.

Update 2: I informed SOTO of the issue below and they sent me a new lighter no cost. This one is holding up better, no issues so far. Back to 5 stars! ……. Update: 5 to 2 stars. there is a small rubber piece that seals connection between the torch and lighter gas tube. Once that falls out and gets lost, the torch is useless. Faulty design. Great while it lasts. ……. Not convinced about long term durability, just because butane torches in general have a short lifespan in my experience. But for now while it's working it is perfect for the cigar-smoking traveler. Common lighter goes in carry-on (allowed, but torches are not allowed) and the torch part gets packed in a checked bag (allowed because now it's not functional, and lighters are not allowed). Possibly you could get away with everything on a carry on, if the parts are separated into different compartments, but I wouldn't push my luck with TSA.
