Description

Weller transforms hand soldering The art of hand soldering has been around for a very, very long time, thousands of years in fact. But it was only until 1941 that a transformer based instant heating soldering method was developed by an impatient American radio repairman who was tired of sitting around waiting for his soldering gun to heat up. Carl E. Weller had to wait until after WWII ended in 1945 to get his Weller Manufacturing Company going. In 1960, the Weller Manufacturing Co. in the US patented the “Magnastat” soldering iron which used a magnetic component to regulate the temperature at the iron’s tip. In an expansion overseas beginning in 1959, the Weller GmbH plant in Besigheim, Germany, along with new plants in other countries, was organized to manufacture temperature controlled irons and soldering guns for primarily industrial markets throughout Europe and the Near East. Keeping pace with the increasing complexity of our customers’ needs, Weller Germany became the market leader for developing and manufacturing hand soldering products worldwide. Our products were proudly emblazoned with “Made in Germany”, signifying innovation and reliability. • Great product.
Style: 6-piece kit
Works great. Heats very fast. The only negative I see is that I wish the butane capacity was higher.

  • A high quality portable soldering iron.
Style: 6-piece kit
I have purchased several low cost butane irons and all of them were made cheaply. While nearly everything at low cost today seems to be made in China, some China production is truly worthless junk that will fail shortly & you with no replacement parts to be had from anywhere. My last $30 iron was one of these & it looked wonderful but the metal was so soft it deformed when hot and low pressure applied to the tip. I am a Ham Radio operator 300 feet from the ocean and have migrated from lead based solder to the lead free versions which will not oxidise as readily near salt water. This requires a higher heat as some of the wires are 14 gauge and the connectors are substantial. Being far from electricity the only way I could get the power to solder was to use a 1,200 watt inverter and power it from a motorcycle battery and then use my Weller electric iron to do the job. A lot of work and the battery did not last long. To carry a deep cycle battery out to the different antennas is not realistic. This weller Iron does three particular things for me; It melts the plumbing solder quickly. It has a very effective adjustment valve for the gas (heat) flow and it is solid as a rock. More, it starts easily and the controls are effective. I rate this 5 stars because it does what I bought it to do and it does it well. It is NOT a 250 watt equivalent iron and I don't know if there is one for butane that gets that hot. I would like one assuming it also went down to as low a temperature as this one but I don't need it Cons: The product itself is just fine. You do need to remember to shut off the gas by using the on/off "switch" as at the lowest valve setting there is still a miniscule flame that endures and will remain lit while you put the iron away. I would like to see a metal sheath for the tip to fit into that will snuff out any flame when putting the iron away in its case, one affixed to the case that requires the iron to seat into it to close the case. In case of user stupidity it would not stop the butane from running out but it would stop the heat. ... show more

  • Good iron. Good torch.

A great soldering iron. Great torch too.

  • Good iron, crap case
Style: 6-piece kit
This works great, even for larger wire or splices with 3-4 wires. The case is crap, so only 4 stars.

  • Great product at a reasonable price
Style: 6-piece kit
Works well. Great quality and great product. Came with multiple attachments. I’ve been using it for over 5 months and no leaks or issues at all. I work for a high end electric vehicle company and this thing has been used and abused

  • Replacement unit.
Style: 6-piece kit
After 2 years of hard soldering work in various capacities, the torch valve failed to ignite. This is the third replacement unit. This kit either works or it fails completely, no matter what you do to revive it by disassembling it all the way down to the valve. Parts are not available, so buy a replacement unit. ... show more

  • Weller PSI100K Butane Soldering Tool
Style: 6-piece kit
There were many reasons why I purchased this item, so I will do my best to give a quick, condensed version. As a radio control plane, helicopter and car enthusiast, a soldering iron is one of those must-have items, in your toolbox. I use Deans connectors every chance I get, and quite frankly, I was always having issues with my 2 "Instant-Hot" soldering guns. Just seemed like they did not heat fast, or very hot, and as a result, I damaged many a connector beyond repair. This particular soldering tool is a stellar example of versatility. To start with, it is powered by butane, so no electricity needed. The kit itself comes with 3 of the most common tips, and the paperwork that comes with it shows many more tips that can be ordered separately. This tool is very simple to use: simply slide the gas switch to "on" and use the other slide switch to activate the igniter. Within a minute or two, the tip is at operating temperature, and you can then adjust the temperature up or down, at the butt end of the tool. This is one of those tools which I wish I would have found years ago. Between my pencil soldering iron, and my 2 "Instant-Hot" soldering guns, I could have bought almost two of these tools. I absolutely love this thing, and it comes in a nice, compact box with storage space for additional tips. Now that I have this, in my toolbox, it eliminates 3, corded tools, that were bulky and heavy. ... show more
