Ordered this as a replacement for an older Sony unit. The old Sony remote looks exactly like the new one and works fine with the new player - that was a nice bonus [two remotes - now I can lose one without crying LOL]. Two critiques: With the older player, I could press play or eject and the machine would turn itself on and perform the function. This player takes longer to wake up and requires you to use the power button, wait for it to wake up and then you can press play or eject - that's a little annoying. The second nit-picky comment - the front of this player is equipped with hard to push buttons across the top of a beveled front section of the player. Yep - it's pretty, but when you push the button hard enough to make it actually depress, the player has a tendency to kick up in the back and kiss the shelf in the front - not the best product design on the planet. Would've been better if the buttons had been on the front of the unit instead of on the top for that reason. I like the overall look - just button placement could've been a little more thought out. These two things are not deal breakers, just a little annoying, and overall, this is a great player. I'm very happy. ... show more

This is just a perfect basic DVD player for someone on a budget! My family's old Sony finally needed to be replaced and, since it had been so reliable for years, I knew that I wanted to get another Sony. This one was in "Like New" condition and it's even better than that. I like that it's compact, sleek, smooth functioning and incredibly simple for even me, Grandma, to set up in no more than 5 minutes. The remote that comes with it works for the TV as well. I'm absolutely thrilled with it! I will say, however, that if you need RCA cords longer than 2' you should order those separately, as I did. Otherwise, this DVD player is ready to give you many great movie nights. Highly recommend! ... show more

This player major features are: - small footprint - progressive scan rendering - support for component video and audio - support for MP3 and JPEG - Energy Star compliant It would have been a sensational product back in say... 1998. In 2012 it's still a good buy due to its low price. Surely, its lack of support for HDMI, DVI and optical or multi-channel sound don't make it a good candidate for the living room entertainment center. On the other hand, a small, inexpensive, simple, easy to operate DVD player was exactly what someone in our household needed to play workout videos on an old CRT TV, down in the basement. This unit proved itself to be perfect for the task. While we aren't likely to use it for anything other that straight playback, it's worth noting that the player comes with some surprising capabilities including: - parental controls - multiple languates - control of TV via its remote - screen setup (16:9, 4:3, 4:3 pan scan) - screen saver - multi-disc resume - auto play - subtitles - support for .mpg, .mpeg, .jpg, .mp3, .wma, .w4a and .wav file formats There is a Sony-backed 1 year warranty on parts an labor and my experience with Sony honoring their warranty promises has been very good. I would buy this as a no-frills unit meant to perform some very specific job. ... show more

I am downgrading this from the original five stars (see review below) to one (zero) stars. After three months (almost to the day) of very occasional use, it went belly up. It just died. It stopped playing in mid dvd (and it had previously stopped many times but then righted itself after turning it on/off) and wouldn't even let me eject the disc. I'm going to check the warranty but considering it was only $30 I have to ask whether it's even worth returning it. If I decide not to return it, I'll have to take a screwdriver to it to get my dvd back (and it was brand new). I am about to buy a blu-ray player, but you can be assured it will *not* be a Sony. My recommendation: don't even think of buying this piece of Sony crap. I've learned my lesson: stay away from Sony. The original review: When you consider that it's easy to run out for a pizza and drop $30 these days, this dvd player is a bargain. I've had it about a month now and it operates perfectly. The remote control seems to have a lot of functions that I'm not sure have anything to do with the player, but that's OK, it also works just fine. I bought this just to use as a bedroom dvd player. I had a great Magnavox, also a cheapie, but the remote died and I couldn't find a universal that operated all of the features, so I just dropped $29 (the price when I bought this) and got a new player. My only complaint is that the controls on the player itself are very tiny and hard to see (there is no illuminated display window showing you functions, etc--you have to get a bigger player for that option I guess), but most people use the remote, so no big deal. The player works great and, again, for $30, what a bargain. ... show more
