  • Very happy with this blu ray player
Just just want I wanted it to do; play DVD discs with up-scaling and blu ray discs reliably and with great quality. Provides a noticeable and welcome improvement in video and sound quality compared to my old DVD player. I don't need streaming since I already use Roku but the streaming features were a bonus. Didn't need wifi since I already had ethernet nearby so I got this model. Obviously the BDPS3700 miodel would have been the choice if I wanted wifi. So far have experienced none of the issues others have elaborated on. This unit is totally silent and loads fast, at least from my perspective. I am blown away by how small and compact it is. It was extremely easy to setup and did it's own software update over the internet automatically on first startup. So far don't see any grounds for criticism. Does what I want it to do and at a very good price. ... show more

  • GOOD DEVICE, REASONABLE PRICE
I figured it was time for me to start streaming shows, but I knew I didn't want to be streaming them onto either my computer or tiny little screens that would give me eyestrain and neckaches. So I gambled on Sony. And it paid off. This is an attractive device that sits unobtrusively under the TV. It hooks by Ethernet directly into your cable modem. Since I've got it on the main TV and in that little nest of electronic cord knots, that was no issue at all. It's fast loading and the picture is flawless once it gets all buffered. I've never had it stutter or lose its place, never had a lag. It's like watching HD TV and I can't tell the difference. It runs all my existing DVDs -- my gamble on Sony paid off. ... show more

  • Excellent Blu-Ray disc player
This Sony BDPS1700 player is excellent for the price. I'm using it to play both regular and Blu-Ray discs viewed on a Panasonic plasma. I have not tried streaming with it. Pros: Plays all my discs with no problems. All digital content has been rendered superbly. Very fast start-up. Resumes stopped movies. Very good value. Con: Remote is slightly small - but not enough to stop me from ordering a 2nd player for another room. If you just need a basic player which performs flawlessly and produces great video, get this Sony. ... show more

  • Mostly good
I was looking for a simple, inexpensive Blu-ray player, and a quick startup time was an important factor. This product has an optional quick-start feature that works fairly well, but it still starts up on a dashboard rather than directly to the disc, adding a step that can take time if you're not paying attention. With the quick-start feature disabled, the player starts up on a dashboard and you have to wait for it to register that there's a disc inserted. I've been using the player for about a month. I've used 8 Blu-ray discs (all from a TV series) and 1 DVD. On the first Blu-ray, there was a delay (1 or 2 seconds) before the beginning of each chapter. I initially thought it was the player, but I experienced it with only that one disc. Also, the Blu-ray discs would not remember the location when the player was stopped or powered down, so I would have to go through the previews and menu every time I powered it on. The DVD, however, did remember the location. Physically, the player is fairly small and quite lightweight. It looks simple and clean, which I like. The remote is on the small side, and it includes buttons to change the TV volume. Those buttons worked on a Sony TV but did not work on a Samsung TV, so it may only work for Sony's. Lastly, I had read in another review that there was a whole process for updating the firmware for the player. However, when I went through the process I found that firmware was already up to date. ... show more

  • Works like a charm.
I could gush about this--it's cute and little, and so is the remote. Not to mention that the remote can be tuned in to work with your tv, so it removes the need to have more than one remote around. You can add and subtract apps to the box, and best of all, it streams Amazon Prime and Netflix, all the while allowing you to choose which Netflix person's profile that you want. This is not wireless. I picked a non-wireless to provide an added measure of security. If you want a wireless--there is a Sony version of this that doesn't have wireless, but this is a really nice alternative if you don't mind wires. ... show more

  • Sony product, debunked
Ok First of all, so that we are all on the same page here, this blu ray player is NOT wifi. It must be hooked up to your modem via an Ethernet cable if you wish to enjoy the streaming products available. Also, it must be hooked up to the internet via your modem to facilitate updates, including firmware unless you do not have internet. In this case, you will need to download the firmware update onto a USB stick and than uploaded to this device via the USB located on the front panel. Instructions for both scenarios are located at the manufacturers website. Information is found in the owner's manual. That all said and understood, we move on. I hooked mine up to the internet via an Ethernet cable to my modem. I actually connect all my audio/video components up to the internet in this manner to alleviate the excess usage on my wifi. On screen instructions showed me the firmware currently on the machine and also an updated version of firmware I can load onto my machine. Following the prompts, the download started and was finished within 20 minutes. The info on screen showed that the newest firmware was installed. Everything worked as I hoped it would. From that point on, I inserted a movie, watched it, removed the DVD and put it all to sleep. It all worked exactly as it was supposed to. And based on the price I paid for it here at Amazon, it was a pretty good bargain. I will return after a period of time for an update, but don't expect much, the last Sony blu ray player I owned, I used for about 5 years and now it is the backup in my bedroom. ... show more
