Yes, this is a genuine Sony Blu-ray/DVD player. However, to disarm those silly regional restrictions, an outside lab has had to open the case and make a small adjustment or two. This violation of the factory sealed case, unfortunately, renders any manufacturer's warranty moot. But since Sony make fine products, it's unlikely you'll ever need warranty service. When I travel abroad, I like to look for Blu-rays and DVDs I can't get here in the U.S. With this tweaked Sony player, I can watch them from the comfort of my couch on my NTSC format TV. (That's the image format on all North American, Japanese, and other countries' TVs. Europe and elsewhere use PAL.) A handy, simple-to-read, one-page (one-sided) instruction sheet tells you how to set the player in case it doesn't automatically adjust for the zone, which it does most of the time. I keep the instructions in the same decorative box in which I keep my remotes, so it's always available in case I need it. I have been using region-free DVD and Blu-ray/DVD players for more than 20 years and love being able to view films and TV shows I can't always find at home. Shipping is good. Packaging of the DVD via shipping is also good, no damage. This DVD is a little smaller than I thought (size wise) but that;s not an issue. Setting up and start playing Blue ray DVD is relatively easy, I did mine within 5 mins. In my case, I do not need to make any setting change . . plug in DVD from Europe n Asia it plays right away. Then switch to play US DVD, it works right away no setting required. This DVD comes with a couple of apps like Netflix, Amazon, ... so if you have accounts with them it is an alternative box to play those medias. In my case, it is great because that save me one me more HDMI on my receiver and I get all audio via home theater systems. The only cons, in my view, is the remote control. It is a little small . . more like a design for 6 yrs old kids. But after a bit of getting use to, there is no problem. So far this is a great buy for multi region DVD with Blue Ray NOTE: I would be great if the have more apps. Like AMAZON MUSIC - so I can play music via my home theater audio system. I hope this can be added soon. August 10 2017: All works fine. I wish Sony provides some capability to make You TUBE search in different language (like Chinese, Thai, ...) ... show more

It works smoothly and for all regions. With BluRay DVDs the quality is superb, with regular DVDs from the 1990s or so, the image quality isn't great. Works well with music CDs

This DVD player is awesome! It was easy to set up, quick to start and the remote is easy to use. The picture is crystal clear. I am very happy with this purchase. Update: I still love the player but it is not region free. I cannot play my dvd from the UK on it.

Another reviewer has posted a pretty exhaustive and comprehensive description of the "why's and wherefore's" of DVD regions and Blu Ray zones, so I'm not going to comment on DVD and Blu Ray regions / zones. You should find the other reviewer and read his excellent tutorial. I will just emphasize that this product is as described, a new Sony Blu Ray player. The player has been modified by a third party to play all regions DVDs so you will receive the player in its shipping box that has been opened and re-sealed. I have not tried any European zoned Blu Ray disks, but I have played some non USA region DVDs and they play just fine on this player. No settings necessary; just load your DVD and press Play. The company that modifies the player provides a short instruction sheet for getting started and it is important that you read this and follow the instructions - don't lose this sheet! A couple of notes: the Sony BDP S1700 model is not wi-fi equipped. For internet connectivity, you will need to run an Ethernet cable from your router. However, the only reason that you would need internet connectivity is if you plan to stream Netflix or any other streaming service through this player. If you already stream through your Roku, Firestick or other device, you don't need the internet connection on this player, so don't worry about hooking it up. Not having the internet connection does not affect the functionality of the player. Also, the modifier company warrants only the modification, not the player. The player warranty remains with Sony. And I'm not sure of how Sony would honor a warranty request on a modified player. But I have not had any issues with this player. A note about the remote - it is terrible! And this is not a reflection on the modifier company because they simply pass on the Sony package - remote and all. So a big raspberry to Sony for this awful remote. The unlighted buttons are small and difficult to see in a darkened room. My biggest gripe is the large "Netflix" button located right next to the "Play" button. It is quite easy to press this Netflix button by mistake which will immediately switch you over to Netflix. You then have to back out of Netflix, restart the DVD and then find the place where you left off (and turn on a room light so you can see what you are doing). Simple solution: search on Amazon for part # RMT-B116A. This is another Sony remote that is slightly larger, has much more functionality and doesn't have the huge Netflix button. You can also set this one up to control your TV. It has the colored Blu Ray zone buttons and it works fine with this modified DVD player. I bingought this in March of 2026. From the beginning I could not depend on whether it would play or not. It was very undependable. And it was very frustrating. Finally I got the good idea to send it back (DUH). Amazon was great with this. They refunded my money and did not require that I return it. I bought another one from a different dealer. Wouldn't you know it? This one would not play the sound. ARGH!! I have sent this one back, too. I thought Sony was a dependable brand. ... show more
