  • Great Product
Size: 9500 lb. Load Capacity Style: Single
Package arrived quickly. Box looked like it had been run over. The winch was undamaged. Installation was easy enough. It works well so far

  • Great bang for the buck and much better than the typical Chinese winches I have seen.
Update on 2/8/16: I have used this winch a lot on the back of my tractor to help with large, leaning tree removal while clearing my property for our new home. It has worked in a stellar manner each time used. One of the last times used was to "try" and keep a ~70' tall oak tree with very large limbs located more on one side than any other, from falling onto/being supported by other trees and creating a very dangerous situation. This did not work as I could not get the winch wire rope extension high enough to provide enough leverage on this very large tree, along with not being able to anchor the tractor to a tree in the now open, cleared field. In the end the tree went in the direction I was trying to keep it from going as the leaning tree pressure on the winch caused the tractor to eventually crush four large, rubber wheel chocks behind the tractor's tires and started dragging the 7500# tractor with its brakes locked as the tree was very slowly falling away from us. The winch operator did not notice the tractor was being dragged over the winch control cable and it was ripped from the winch. The situation then went unrecoverable, quickly. I have no idea how much weight the winch was supporting as it and the tractor were being drug with what was left of the wheel chocks and with brakes engaged, but am sure at some points it was FAR more than the rated 12,000 pounds before the dragging began. I have used smaller chocks on the wheels of my Jeep GC with no chock damage with its 9,000 pound winch at maximum pull. In the end the synthetic winch rope was embedded on the winch drum between various layers of rope and sections appeared to be melted/fused together somewhat from all of the heat generated in this greatly overloaded condition. However the winch nor the rope failed and are still functional. I need to replace the existing damaged 7/16" synthetic rope with new 1/2" I have waiting and am planning on purchasing an identical Smittybilt winch to replace the 9k unit on my Jeep GC. Original review: By the time one purchases a less expensive Chinese winch and adds synthetic rope to it, the price is close to this Smittybilt and nowhere near the quality, performance and warranty. I have not used it yet but will update in the future after I have hauled some cut oak trees up a hill with it. I have just installed this on a portable 2" receiver cradle to use on my tractor's 3PH. The synthetic rope is 7/16" diameter, which is pretty hefty and all of the components and construction seem to be high quality. At today's winch prices, I see no reason to purchase anything less than a 10k# class winch for automotive recovery purposes and a 12k# for just a little bit more money is the way to go as a starting point. I have a 9k winch on my Jeep GC that is ~ 8 years old and feel it is borderline in capacity. I am not an expert, but the general standard is one needs a winch capacity that is 1.0 - 1.5 times the maximum expected rolling weight capacity of the winched vehicle. And the greater the winch capacity the better the performance. I like a minimum of 1.5 times the weight, but all circumstances are different. Pros: - Very good quality - 7/16" synthetic rope. I will not use wire rope for safety and weight reasons. Possible abrasion of the synthetic rope is not an issue for me. - Waterproof - Reasonably priced - Efficient 6.6 HP motor with 193:1 gear ratio for relatively quick recovery speeds - Excellent limited lifetime mechanical warranty with a 3 year electrical warranty - Excellent remote control with a magnetic portion to latch onto anything ferrous metal. This will be really handy when using the winch and not having to look for a clean place to lay the remote while using it- just "stick" it on the vehicle. Cons: - There are no instructions on how to install the rope, which is no big deal for one experienced in doing this, but would be helpful for a newcomer. Search the Internet for instructions if you are new to this sort of thing. - The hook on the rope is permanently attached and rated at 3.1T. It is a stout looking hook but I would not intentionally purchase a 3.1T hook for a 12k# winch. There is no easy way to remove this hook and replace with a different one. I will use it and see how it goes. The professional looking hook on my other winch's synthetic rope has no rating on it at all. I assume Smittybilt knows what they are doing. - This is a nit really and not a con, but I was expecting this winch to have a waterproof solenoid box, which it is not. However, the solenoid is an all-in-one unit that is sealed. ... show more

  • Great but...
Size: 9500 lb. Load Capacity Style: Single
Way too heavy! Got nervous of cable after watching videos. If you want a cable this is the best out there for the price. Just not for me when I actually felt how heavy for a Tacoma.

Size: 15500 lb. Load Capacity Style: Single
I am rating this Winch a 5 Star because it is a BEAST, and Does a WONDERFUL job. However there are several things that were not good and had to be overcome to get it to that point. This of course was annoying. The first issue was I got the Winch in and Mounted it to my 2500 Chevy Silverado Diesel. The Winch was SO big I had to make some modifications to the Winch Cradle I got from Tuff Stuff to make it fit the Curt 31042 Front trailer hitch. 2nd after I did 5 pulls with the Winch it just completely quit and would never work again. Now I did do four of those five pulls back to back. However that should NOT have been enough to kill it, but it did. So I told Amazon and they promptly sent me a new one that arrived within 2 days, which was nice. No questions were asked. I have used the new one for 10 pulls and it is VERY strong and works Amazing!! 3rd Alot of the fastener hardware is cheap Chinese screws that have the head strip out easily if you don't press it hard as an 800 lb. Gorilla can. I recommend replacing ALL fasteners with American made Stainless Steel equivalents. 4th they sent the Wrong Mounting bracket so I could not Mount the Module on the left side of the unit like I had preferred to do. Going to call SmittyBilt and see if they will send me the correct bracket. 5th So since the side mount Bracket did not have the correct fitment I had to use the center mount method. Well once installed the module, it would slide from side to side on the cross members. So I had to take it off and bend the Bracket so when mounted it would be tight and could not move. A hassle for sure but not that big of a deal. 6th the second winch that came in had a remote that would randomly bump the line back out into Spool out mode. So While I would try to wind it up the line would just start coming back out. I corrected this by taking the first Winch'es Remote and sending back the second Winch'es remote with the defective Winch. The Winch has Not had that problem at all since trading out remotes. 7th on both Units You have to bump the Remote in or out sometimes to get the clutch to engage or disengage. (Not to big of a deal just a little Quirky) 8th Finally the Free Spool is a little difficult. I am 6'-4" and a pretty strong guy, However I have to really put the Muscle into it and really lean all my weight into pulling the line to get it off the drum. I know that was alot, but if you can get past these quirks as I did the Winch is actually quite Outstanding. The main thing is I think SmittyBilt REALLY needs to up their game on the Quality control department, as well as upgrading ALL fastener hardware. I have loaded vehicles onto trailers, pulled up stumps and destroyed a mobile home with this Winch. it is Very Stout. I will come back and give it a 6 month review when that time comes. IF this unit ends up dying in that time.... I will get it fixed, sell it, and buy the Most expensive Warn I can find. I hope it Will not come to that though..... and by all the other reviews I have seen.... I dont think it will. I say Give this Winch a try You Might end up liking it. ... show more

  • Change out the 3 amp fuse
Size: 9500 lb. Load Capacity Style: Single
I have 2 of these. One on my 4 runner and one on Tacoma. Had to pull a dude out in a fifth wheel 20 miles back on a colorado trail. When reeling the wire back in the fuse blew. Had to wrap all the wire on my bumper until I could get it changed out. Same thing just happened on the 4 runner I installed a 5 amp fuse to replace the 3 amp. No problems yet. ... show more
