  • Excellent product that is close in quality to Klein - but less expensive
I buy a lot of Klein tools because they are top-notch and they last forever. However, I bought a pair of SK wire strippers similar to this pair about 35 years ago...and they just wore out....so I decided to buy another pair. The cost was about half the cost of a similar pair of Klein strippers. The thing I like best about these pliers is that they operate very smoothly right out of the box. No "breaking in" is required. These pliers are a great deal for the money...highly recommend. ... show more

  • Decent strippers, maybe a bit overpriced. Good style for electricians, especially for conduit.
I do maintenance electrical work, so I'm not a full-time electrician but I do enough of it that I have some fairly strong opinions on wire strippers. My favorite pliers are ChannelLock 968, but when my pair fell off a scaffold into a basically bottomless pit I replaced them with a set of Milwaukee pliers since that's what was available. I was never really happy with the grips. they're just large and chunky. These have nice grips, they're dipped and appear to be well applied and bonded well. The needle-nose tips are very good, they have nice sharp teeth and the grind on the stripper portion is also excellent. Everything lines up very well, I stripped some fine stranded 18AWG and had no issues, which the Milwaukee pliers struggled with stripping it cleanly. The outside jaws have a nice square corner and are well-hardened, I tested deburring a piece of 1/2 EMT and they did just fine. I also tested cutting a #8 screw, and they gave a nice clean cut that threaded in nicely afterwards. Overall these are more than usable and are better than the Milwaukee pliers. I don't like them as much as the ChannelLock, but those are also much more expensive ($50 vs $29 for these SK pliers). However, they are USA made. I'm deducting a full star for the misleading "100 years of American Ingenuity" photo in the listing and the slightly high price for the value. I have some old SK sockets that I inherited from my granddad, and they were a solid tool on the level of proto or wright. However, they got bought out and are now offshore owned by the same folks who own shop-vac. This isn't a bad plier, but the marketing that says "SK an American Brand" tries to mislead people into thinking they're better than they are. They are nicer than the Milwaukee pliers, but they are also charging an extra $10 over those. This is a mid-tier plier, but is definitely useable. ... show more

  • Solid Performer, SK vs Knipex vs Milwaukee
Well made tool with tight manufacturing tolerances and hardened blades. Stripping wire is quick and easy, cuts are clean. Feels solid in the hand, operation is silky smooth. I own both the Milwaukee and Knipex models that are similar to this tool, I'll do a brief comparrison between the 3. The Knipex is still the clear winner in my oppinion, but also costs the most. The SK or Milwaukee are both great budget options and handle #8 solid and #10 stranded better than the Knipex. All 3 are 5-star tools, with minor differences. SK 8-inch 4-in-1: + Slightly smaller in length than the similar Milwaukee and Knipex models, easier to fit in some tool pockets/pouches + Sharp cutting blade and precise stripping + Easy to read markings on both sides of the tool + Strips #10 stranded and #8 solid (beats Knipex here) + Smooth operation, blades perfectly aligned + #6-32 and #8-32 screw cutters are easy to use and produce clean cuts - Basic grip coating, not as comfortable as Milwaukee or Knipex - Narrow plier ends, good for holding #6 or #8 nuts, but not as useful as the other two tools with wider jaws. - No locking mechanism, not necessarily a con, just noting it Knipex 8-inch Forged Wire Stripper w/Comfort Grip: + Most comfortable handles + Sharpest & strongest blades, cuts require less force + Cleanest result stripping wires + Widest plier ends, almost like a lineman - Only rated up to #10 solid. Will do #10 strnaded but requires care to not damage strands. - Annoying lock mechanism, many users remove this Milwaukee 9-inch 7-in-1 High Leverage Combination Wire Stripper: + Very comfortable handles, most leverage of the 3 tools + Strips #8 solid and #10 stranded, beats the Knipex and ties with the SK here + Locking mechanism does not get in the way like the Knipex - Cutter blade not as strong as the other two tools, works fine but is damaged easily ... show more

  • A sturdy forged steel stripper
I'm pretty happy with this SK wire stripping tool. I've got a couple of well used and worn stamped steel Klein strippers that needed to be replaced, so when this was listed as an Amazon Vine item I ordered it. The fit and finish is top notch, as I've noted for other SK tools I've reviewed. I'd only used the stamped steel strippers, and there's a big difference using this forged steel one. It cuts 12/2 Romex like butter, and it strips from 8AWG solid to 20 AWG stranded wire. I stripped and hooked the 12/2 shown in the pics, and the conical jaw made bending a nicely formed hook a quick twist of the wrist. It cuts 6-32 and 8-32 screws with about as much force needed as the Kleins, and the cut screws spun right out. The cut was clean and it didn't leave mangled threads at the tip of the screw that require a screwdriver to get it out of the stripper. The stripper won't need to be tightened regularly to keep it cutting right either. I'd prefer that it had a crimping jaw behind the hinge instead of the short serrated jaw that this one has, but overall it's a solid stripper There are a few other forged steel strippers on the market, usually at a higher price, and this one works very well plus it's well priced. This is a good stripper for wiring plugs and switches on residential and commercial jobs. I've done my share of this type of work, and I appreciate the design and solid feel of this stripper. It's a keeper in my book. ... show more
