  • I liked the larger backboard size (54 inches) relative to others ...
Style: Portable Pattern Name: Basketball System
I had researched many different portable hoops before deciding on the Lifetime XL. I liked the larger backboard size (54 inches) relative to others in the same price range. I purchased it from Amazon (not a third party) and only paid $220, which I consider a bargain. Amazon delivered the hoop to my doorstep in less than a week. I consider myself fairly handy when it comes to assembling products - this hoop took me 2.5 hours to assemble. It would have gone a bit faster if I had a second adult to assist. I thought the instructions were fine, in fact much better than many products where the instructions seem to be a literal translation from chinese to english. We filled it with sand so as to avoid the potential of the water freezing during the winter and subsequently cracking the plastic base. Once filled the base is substantial yet easy enough for an adult to move over pavement (trying to move in the grass was a two person job). My children (15 year old daughter and 9 year old son) enjoy the height adjustability. Both of them are able to adjust the height by themselves with no difficulty. The backboard is a bit flimsy when compared to a high school gym backboard but I expected this when considering the very reasonable price ($220). The orange rim is very substantial and solid - a pleasant surprise. When a ball hits the rim the ball deflects off with no movement of the rim itself. So, overall an excellent product that will encourage my kids to set down their electronic devices and get some fresh air and exercise! :) ... show more

  • Nice product for the right price
Style: Portable Pattern Name: Basketball System
This is a pretty solid product as I would imagine as this is Amazon’s top seller. The 4” pole makes it look very sturdy. The backboard has a steel frame and is also very sturdy. The instructions were ok but also used YouTube to help assemble. Not as bad as others has said. You can also use the bilt app to see step by step instructions. The backboard does shake a little but is expected with all portable hoops. It adjusts to any height easily. For this price, the quality is very good. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a basketball hoop. ... show more

  • Great unit, great customer service!
Style: Portable Pattern Name: Basketball System
We have had our hoop set up for about 8 months. It gets a fair amount of use by three families on our block, and it has been outside in snow / rain / wind. Set up was challenging, and definitely required two people with power tools who have assembled things before. Getting it into position before the base was filled was tricky. However, since it's been set up, the kids have been having a great time, and the unit seems to be standing up to the weather well. A shout-out here to the customer service department at Lifetime: We lost a couple of the caps when we moved the unit, and they readily sent us replacements. It was a great experience! ... show more

  • Assembly Disaster
Style: Portable Pattern Name: Basketball System
Well- I never write reviews, but have wasted so much time on this that I felt obligated to spare others. My wife and I have spent over 8 hours or so trying to put this thing together- and we had to stop about halfway through because the parts weren't machined correctly. The directions are confusing, but if you read closely and use the videos you can figure it out. The problem is the hardware itself isn't really machined well. The bolts don't line up easily, some of our screws that were supposed to just screw on easily wouldn't even go on with the use of a vice. Now we have done about 40% of it and we need to hire someone to complete it. Such a waste of time and money. We are pretty handy generally and have assembled all of our other kids products including a large play structure. We tried contacting customer support but they just regurgitate copy and pasted lines from a generic email and really are of no help at all. Stay far away from this product! ... show more

  • Works perfectly. Complicated assembly.
Style: In-Ground Pattern Name: Basketball System
ASSEMBLY/INSTALLATION TIPS: 1) Pay very close attention when assembling the post. what you do here is not easily reversable so you must get it right the first time. there are slots in the bottom section of post (that gets cemented in the ground. These slots will be parallel to the back board. THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT after installation! you Must get these slots lined up with you court layout before your concrete sets up. This is the main reason I dinged this item a star. This was stated in the instructions, but it wasn't called out clearly and almost cost me dearly. Also, make sure you line up the screw holes with the slot on the other two posts. I don't think you will be able to turn the posts once they are "tapped" together. 2) I know this is a pain, but go through all the parts and figure out which letter code belongs to each screw, nut and washer. You may even need a tape measure here. There are plastic and metal parts that are similar in size, but go in different places, so you will want to know which is which. I would even put them in labelled piles/bags. If you don't do this. you will spend a lot of time staring at pictures and fumbling through the instructions trying to figure out what you need. 3) Plastic bushing are used between parts that move or rub, metal parts are used as spacers. As I said before, there are both metal and plastic parts that look similar are included. In general, the plastic pieces go between two major parts that may rub against each other as the mechanism moves. REVIEW: I purchased this hoop for Christmas, but just recently got it installed during a break from this winter. I don't know how many people are buying permanent-install basketball hoops any more, all I seem to see are the "portable" ones. I went the permanent route because I live in a windy area and I am lazy. I know I would leave a portable one out to be blown over and broken. Overall, I am very pleased with this product. The backboard sounds a little hollow, but that isn't surprising to me for a product in this range. It is sturdy and bounces true, and that is what really matters. 10 ft sure seems a lot higher to me with a clear backboard outdoors, but that could just be me getting old. One thing to note is that there are no "stops" in the adjustment mechanism that I can feel. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. It is good, because if you are a little on your installation of the post, you can still get the hoop to the right spot (i do mean a little, you can't go much over 10 feet). On the other hand, you will probably need to spend a little time with a tape measure and magic market making your own registration marks if you plan to adjust this very often. First things first, the packaging for this is big and heavy. If you aren't going to install it right away be prepared to look at it, work around it, and deal with it in general, because you WILL notice it sitting around. I did not have any of the problems I have seen on here with missing parts or damaged pieces. Everything was intact and pretty well packaged. I did have a few things floating around in the box where they shouldn't have been, so I would recommend taking inventory while you are still in the return period. I was able to assemble this by myself without too much frustration. I wouldn't recommend doing the final few steps of the install yourself unless you are tall and strong like me or like hernias, but it is possible for some people. The assembly is a complicated process with a lot of parts that are pretty similar. I am pretty mechanically-inclined, but there were a couple times where I had to disassemble stuff I had already put together and do it again. All told, I would estimate that I spent 3-4 hours putting this together and installing it. The assembly instructions are middle of the road. I have seen both better and worse instructions. TL/DR? If you are looking for a cheap, permanent basketball hoop this will fit the bill. Just be thorough and careful when installing it and you will have an enjoyable setup in about half a day. ... show more
