  • Excellent product but not a DIY project unless you know what you are doing
Style: Surge Protection
Purchased/Installed the FS140 whole house surge suppressor in July 2021. Been working flawlessly since. Just sits there silently doing its job. Whole house protection at the service entrance is great piece of mind. I do note the price is up substantially since 2021 (thanks covid) but still an outstanding value in my opinion. However, not a DIY project if you are afraid of electricity or uncomfortable with working INSIDE a breaker box. Requires the addition of a dedicated two pole (240v) 20A circuit breaker (not included - purchase separately for your brand of panel) to your existing service panel so (1) make sure you have free space and (2) you will have to access the inside of the panel so BE CAREFUL. The instructions recommend the shortest run possible for the wiring from breaker to the device as well as keeping it close to the neutral and ground bars in the panel. Also, although the instructions did not specify distance from the main breaker, I made sure to put mine first in line (my main comes in the bottom of the panel and the breaker for the surge protector is first on the bottom right as circled in photo) as I figured it could not hurt to do so. This location was also close to ground/neutral in the panel and gave me a knockout close by to mount the FS140 device. Had to move some other breakers to accomplish this so again DO NOT ATTEMPT if you don't know what you are doing. If you are at all unsure of your ability to DIY this I recommend you google and read the installation instructions first to make sure you understand what is expected. PROs Small footprint Easy to Mount Clear Instructions Impressive protection specs Feels substantial/well built Visible LEDs report on protection status CONs May (likely) require additional materials to install Not for your average DIYer Would I purchase again? YES - even at its current price it is cheap protection and great piece of mind. Far better than relying on surge suppression strips of dubious origin and quality. ... show more

  • For those who don’t mess around.
Style: Surge Protection
Upon seeing this my electrician said: “Oh man, you aren’t messing around!“ (Side note: this thing is quite larger than it appear in the product photo- this is a serious piece of equipment.) And he’s right. I live in FL and power is shoddy. Also, lots of issues with power coming back on after storms and giving appliances surges. FPL wanted to sign me up for some surge service at a pretty hefty monthly cost and it struck me as rather backwards to pay them to protect me against their own poor maintenance of their system. Anyhow, regardless even with this unit which is at the higher end of the cost spectrum, and including the suppressor outlets, over time there will be substantial savings as well as protection from internal surges which the FPL service does not address. Most importantly I work from home on computer equipment costing more than my range, fridge or air handler. But this I feel is an essential addition for any homeowner, considering the cost of appliances and electronics hooked up in the average home. So, I thought it would be pretty senseless to cheap out on a unit designed to keep my most valuable possessions safe and I went for the top shelf offering- this unit from Siemens. That being said it should be installed in concert with surge suppressor outlets for best results. Couple of things people tend to not realize are: 1. Most surges happen from inside of the home. 2. Most damage is not clearly visible or obvious but manifests in accelerated deterioration of your electronic items, compressor motors, etc. 3. An alarm indicator is priceless in that it lets you know when the unit needs replacing so you don’t go unprotected. 4. Most mass-market surge protector strips etc. are rather useless. 5. Having protection at both the panel and the outlet is essential in mitigating internal and external surges. (I use the blue Hubble suppressors at key outlets in combination with this at the panel.) I chose the higher rated Siemens unit because of my geographic location as indicated in the map from the manufacturer as well as a general desire to not have to replace damaged units endlessly. Consult their documentation or ask them directly to find out which model is right for you. I did a lot of research and this series from Siemens seems to be the best option. Of course, read the documentation thoroughly to ensure the best results and it would be wise to have this installed by a qualified electrician. If mounting indoors there’s a plate available on amazon which I also purchased and would recommend. It’s on the pricier side at around $35 but makes the installation appear much cleaner while also maintaining easy access to the unit. So I guess the question to ask yourself is:(insert Dirty Harry voice) do you feel lucky? For me, I’d rather spend a couple hundred now than a couple thousand later. ... show more

  • very well made
Style: Surge Protection
I installed this recessed in drywall with the very expensive but very well made mount plate, it looks great this was the only place I could access due to design of my panel - avoid the always live service entrance side for safety!!!! . Anyway this SPD is very highly rated (google it and you get a lot of info), it appears to be very well made the wire is decently long about 3 ft (but make as short as you can per instructions) and heavy 10ga wire much more solid than other items I considered. Yes it is pretty expensive BUT when you think of all the devices in your home the cost is worth it. About a year ago I lost several items in a power outage after a storm and have been considering adding a SPD since.... but after replacing my AC unit (not power related, just worn out), I decided this was something I needed now as we have frequent storms and a few outages every year - think about the hit everything takes as power comes back on all over the area at the same time. Whole home surge protection is standard on new homes so adding it to an older home makes good sense - will it save my stuff???? who knows but much better than nothing. The first one I received was damaged (stuff rattling around inside it) but Amazon replaced it within one day and the installation went very smoothly after that but a quick word of caution: If you dont know how to install this hire someone - it requires some skill and opening then working inside your service panel and cant say this enough: this can be very dangerous IF you touch the wrong thing it can kill you be very careful!!!! great item and Im very happy with my choice ... show more
