I'm picky about my home office chair, because I don't want to be one of those people who keep whining about how their back hurts, without doing anything about it. For years I used an ergonomic kneeling chair, which I loved in every way, but sadly it doesn't fit my new job and my new home office setup. I have actually tried four of these wheeled chairs to find one that works with no problems. This is the fourth, and I think it's a keeper. In retrospect, maybe I should have just sunk a thousand dollars into a really upscale chair, but as they say, you only have 20/20 vision in hindsight. Anyway, the thousand-dollar chairs are weird looking, and I'm not sure I would have been happier in the long run. PROS: (1) METAL, NOT PLASTIC - The Serta Ashland chair has all metal parts on the base of the chair, so you are not relying on a piece of plastic to support your weight. Previously I had a Flash furniture midback executive chair that I loved until one of the plastic cones at the bottom broke, causing the chair to tilt suddenly and try to dump me onto the floor. This Serta chair is all metal on the bottom, and the metal feels very sturdy. (2) EASY INSTALLATION - The instructions were printed in English with good pictures. The parts are clearly labeled. There are only 4 bolts to install, and an extra bolt was included just in case. All the holes lined up correctly with the parts. The only thing I would add to the instructions is, put in two diagonal bolts first, then the other two, then keep tightening the bolts in a circle, 1, 2, 3, 4, until they're all equally tight. For best results, don't try to tighten the bolts one at a time, but keep going around the circle until done. (3) COMFORT - Once I got it adjusted correctly, I found the Serta Ashland to be a very comfortable chair. However, getting it adjusted was not easy, so read on to the CONs for more information. On the plus side, I like the wrap-around feel of being cradled in the chair. My elbows fit inside the armrests if I don't want armrests, or I can raise my arms to use the armrests. Even after working on the tilt for quite a while this afternoon, I still don't think it tilts quite as far back as shown in the product advertisement illustration, but it tilts far back enough for me to be comfortable. Previously to buying this chair, I tried the Flash furniture high-backed executive chair, but the high-backed style didn't work for me because it forced my shoulder blades forward and gave me a backache. I also previously tried a Union & Scale task chair from Staples that didn't work for me, because although it looks like an old-fashioned steno chair, they made the back too wide and curved it in such a way that I can't hold my elbows in a comfortable position. This Serta Ashland chair (minus the cushion) lets me hold my shoulder blades and elbows in a comfortable position, and the mid-back style lets me lean back, in a back-arched position, to stretch every now and then. CONs: I think the PROs outweigh the CONs, and some of the CONs are very minor, but here they are: (1) SEAT HEIGHT - The chair comes with a thick cushion that is meant to be Velcroed onto the chair seat. I am about 5'8", and with the cushion on the chair, the chair sits much too high for me, even with the chair seat lowered all the way. Ergonomically, you should be able to sit in the chair with your feet resting flat on the floor. A shorter person might actually find their feet dangling. I nearly gave up on it, until I had a brainwave that obviously the cushion can be un-Velcroed and put in a closet. Unfortunately when you do that, the Velcro strip on the chair seat sticks to your pants. I solved that problem by folding up an attractive piece of printed fabric and using it as a seat cover. I like a firm seat anyway so I don't miss the extra layer of cushioning. Ideally, Serta would supply two cushions, one thick and one thin, but of course that would make the chair more expensive, so I'm just as happy without. (2) TILT ADJUSTMENT STIFFNESS - I nearly gave up on the chair, because at first I couldn't get it to tilt more than a couple of inches, even when I followed the printed instructions exactly. However, then it occurred to me that maybe it was stiff because it was new. I made sure the control bar that controls the seat height was pulled out and not pushed in, as shown in the instructions. Then I put on cotton gloves so my fingers wouldn't slip, and worked the tilt tension knob back and forth a bunch of times, and gradually I was able to turn it farther and farther to the right until the chair would tilt backward. The knob was VERY stiff, and I type for a living so I have strong fingers, and I used to use those finger strengthening gizmos that they sell in sporting good stores, so this is NOT just a "girly" comment. However, eventually I achieved success with the Serta Ashland chair tilt. I just tried the same thing on my old Flash furniture high-back chair, and it still won't tilt, so not all chairs are created equally in this regard. (3) ODOR - The fabric cover has an acid kind of new-fabric smell. I prefer to have everything 100% non-toxic, but beggars can't be choosers. The odor is not too strong, does not seem super-toxic, and I'm sure it will fade. I would actually have paid extra for something more eco if it was available with the same feature set. (4) RATTLING NOISE - The metal casters rattle when you roll the chair, and are a little jerky. However, I still think metal is an improvement over plastic because it's less likely to break and should wear a lot better in the long run, so I can live with the rattle. Overall, the feel and fit of the chair seemed weird at first, but the longer I sit in it, the better I like it. I think I will be happy with this chair, and I'm glad I kept shopping.

Not as squishy as I thought it would be, but idk if I'd want it to be. Replaced my grandpa's office chair from the mid 80s I had been using with one of these. I got the lavender one. Pretty good back support, it no longer hurts to stand up, my back isn't sore, I don't dread sitting at my desk for work anymore. Solid upgrade. It came mid morning, i took lunch and had it inside and ready to sit in about 10 minutes. Really easy to assemble. It's like 4 screws on the bottom of the chair and everything else just snaps together. Wheels kinda suck, but I'm not trying to race anyone in an office chair. If you've been looking at this watching the price fluctuate, just get it when it drops again, you won't regret it.

Pros • I love the material of the chair. You don’t get that icky sticky feeling that is common if you are wearing shorts and your skin sits on a leather chair. Especially in any kind of warm or humid situation it breathes better. • Well-padded with memory foam and coils so there is no pain from pressure on the underside of your legs from sitting long periods. • I wanted armrests but for them not to get in the way of my arms, these are fairly wide and out of the way enough not to bother me. • The armrests are NOT adjustable but happen to fit under my IKEA desk which is basic just a flat surface with legs no drawer or thickness. (see specs on clearance in the listing photos to determine if that will be the case for you) These complete specs as shown are very helpful in determining how this chair will fit an existing desk setup. If they didn't fit under my desk I wouldn't want the chair. • It is stylish. I am using it in an apartment that will also be used for an Airbnb rental and wanted something that would give it a hotel room feel. This works. • You can adjust the seat height (see detailed specs) • It tilts and has knob to adjust the tension of the tilt, or it can be locked to prevent tilting. • It comes with great instructions, the only tool you need to assemble comes with it, and it is a quality tool with a comfortable handle. • It was really easy to put together relative to any other chair I have had (see photos series) • The back sits just below my shoulders. This allows me to “Twist Stretch” in a way that a high back wouldn’t. Also, I can put my elbow on the chair back to stretch my shoulders and back in a way I hadn’t thought off prior to this chair but am appreciative of now. Cons • The only real con is that there is no headrest (if that is requirement for you). I spend long hours working in a chair and thought it was something I might want, but since having this chair haven’t thought twice about. I feel the very slightly reclined sitting angle of this chair is comfortable. I’m not using this for gaming so if I was so tired I needed to lay my head back, it would be difficult to type anyway. Also, I don’t believe they style of this chair would look right with a headrest anyway. Additional info • I was not paid for this review or received a discount. • I needed a stylish chair that looked like it belonged in a hotel room but worked for me for long hours of sitting and working, I was sold on this one over a few others I’d been stalking on Amazon because of the memory foam cushion with coils, design, and tilt. It was between this and the other Serta, and this looked the cushier. • It had some kind of mill scruff/scratches on the base of the chair’s chrome star base (slightly visible in the photo). I called and spoke with the service department and spoke with “Rio” whom was really nice and helpful. She sent out a replacement immediately. • The seat cushion has a Velcro strip to hold it in place on the base however after a few weeks of heavy use I found my seat cushion seems to slide out a little. The Velcro strip seems to no line up perfectly with the one on the base. This is a newer line of chairs so these minor bugs are to be expected. As I mentioned, so far service has been awesome and far exceeded these minor issues. I’m going to contact the seller to inquire about this and will update. • The Wooden campaign desk I’m using with it is from World Market: [...] UPDATE: 11/12/16 I was sent a replacement seat cushion after contacting customer service. So far I'm still enjoying the chair. One thing I am planning is getting the beige Serta in the future to go with my thicker desk. It has a half-arm which will allow the chair to slide in under my thicker desk while still at a higher elevation. UPDATE 7/19/2017 I Still enjoy the chair however because of the way that back is angled in a slight lean back configuration, I had to get a lumbar support pillow to provide more upright seating position when doing office work. I alternate between using the lumbar pillow and not, sometime daily, sometimes for a few a week or more just depending on which is more comfortable at the time. It's like laying in bed any one position gets uncomfortable after awhile. Although I do think they could have put a little more padding in the back rest area as it seems less so vs what they did for the seat cushion. For this reason I may remove a star. Also, I'm considering removing the wheels on this chair are repurposing it to the living room, then getting the other Serta chair Serta Leighton Stoneware Beige Home Office Chair The reason for this is that I have another thick edged desk and this chairs arm design is not really compatible with me sitting position being as high up as I want to be in relation to the edge of the desk. Not all desks are like mine so this isn't the chairs fault. However the other mentioned chair has a partial arm that would allow me to get the height and closeness I'm after (I think) short of getting a regular office chair with fold up arms. I'm been using it pretty much fine to this point and enjoyed it, however I am thinking of ways to optimize my seating position now.

Have been searching for a replacement office chair for our home office for several years to swap out with a much-loved but incredibly worn out original. This is literally the 5th chair I've purchased. Functionally and comfort wise, this chair is a score. Yup, it was pricey but the value it there. My one and only issue is a flaw in the leather on the top surface of the chair back (very visible). I was super careful assembling the chair - keeping the plastic covering on the leather surfaces while I attached all the hardware and leg assemblies. I was super bummed when I put the chair in place in the office, removed the plastic bag and saw the leather flaw. No way am I going to take it all apart and package it back up! I'll live with it. Lesson learned. Check it all out thoroughly when it arrives! YUP....the old chair is headed to the curb!! Score.
