  • Coolest NVMe PCIe 4.x SSD
Capacity: 4TB Style: 530 NVMe - Gen 4
I use laptops/notebooks pretty much exclusively since around 2008. Never had SSD temperature issues before, but my MSI GT77 Titan was cooking my SSDs, so I went looking for the coolest SSD I could find. The WD Black SN850X had incredible performance for the price, but it would get over 70° C and be disconnected in the middle of large transfers. The factory Samsung 980 Pro already has bad blocks, and it had only been half a year before they started showing up. Pretty much every SSD I tried would idle around 45° C and get up to at least 60° C while gaming (no load on the SSDs, just temps inside the laptop). I assumed that the Crucial P3 Plus would have better temps since it's a slower drive, but it was actually one of the worst of the bunch in terms of temperatures (it's an incredibly good deal for the money aside from the temps though). The Sabrent Rocket Q4 has decent temps, a bit above the 980 Pro. The SK Hynix P31 and P41 have temps that are at least as good as the 980 Pro, and while they use very little power, they still weren't the coolest. I even purchased a second laptop with - I kid you not - a liquid cooling loop. This definitely helped the overall temps, and the Tongfang bottom plate helped because it's metal and not plastic like the MSI (so the bottom plate is like a big heatsink). Still, SSDs could hit 60°C. I lucked out only when someone on the XMG Discord server mentioned how cool the older Firecuda 520 and 510 were for them. I am completely blown away with how low the temps are while the performance is excellent. The performance is not quite as good as the SN850X, but this is comparing a drag racer with a formula 1 car; they are both so much faster than anyone realistically will ever need, so the speed differences don't really matter at all in real life. Far more important is the fact that the Seagate runs about 20° cooler than the WD... Yes, it's seriously that much. The Firecuda tends to idle in the 30 to 40 range, and I've only seen it hit 60 or even the upper 50s when under extreme load. When I say extreme, I mean something like installing about a terabyte of Native Instruments software in a single go, nonstop reads and writes. You definitely pay a premium for the cool temps as well as the performance and brand name, but when you're talking about potentially destroying several terabytes of data with hotter SSDs, it's worth every penny. Right now I am only running Firecuda 530s in every M.2 slot, and the temps are both consistent and cool. Everything else is in an external enclosure that acts like a big heat sink as well. I never would have gotten my issues resolved without switching to this specific SSD. ... show more

  • Great drive with decent capacity and a straightforward installation process.
Capacity: 2TB Style: 530 w/ Heatsink NVMe - Gen 4
While installing it, it took me about 10 minutes to realize the M.2 support screw on my motherboard was already installed instead of being in the bag, so that was a waste of time lol. But other than that, installation was straightforward (bit annoying due to how small M.2 screws are though, but that's not SeaGate's fault). Loving it so far. Didn't have to do any extra setup to get it working, just plugged it in, cloned my drive, removed the old one, and loaded up the computer again. A lot of modern games aren't optimized to take advantage of NVMe speeds, but it is still a great choice for gaming given that it's on the motherboard (so it's *slightly* faster than a SATA drive). I personally use all 2 TB (and need more now, lol), but if you don't have a ton of games installed the 500 GB or 1 TB models will be fine for you. I do recommend getting the model with a heatsink though, as gen 4 drives can get quite hot (and my M.2 slot is located just above the GPU). Oh, and make sure your motherboard supports gen 4 - mine's only gen 3, so it's underclocked right now due to that. TL;DR - Great drive with a lot of space, a straightforward installation process, and no hassle for getting it to actually work. ... show more

  • You get what you pay for. Reliability > Speed.
Capacity: 2TB Style: 530 w/ Heatsink NVMe - Gen 4
Don't get me wrong, this thing is fast. It's just not what sets it apart compared to the competition. I got this after a WD SN850x failed in my brand-new top of the line PC one week after installing. Having a critical failure happen on your primary system drive after configuring a $4000+ PC build is a stress-inducing nightmare. I got suckered by the high speeds and low price of the WD. There is a reason it is cheap though. They take mid-tier NAND flash with a cheap controller and overclock the snot out of it, using black magic to get it just stable enough that *most* of them work. After learning from my mistake and doing some more research I discovered the Firecuda 530. At first glance, it is easy to pass over. It is significantly more expensive than competing WD and Samsung drives. Although the performance is great, it is also *slightly* behind those drives generally in terms of raw speed. Where the Firecuda truly shines is in endurance and reliability, which I have learned is the most important metric for judging storage. It is rated for literally *double* the TBW and DWPD of competing hard drives. (Terabytes written/Drive writes per day) On top of the five year warranty, they offer 3 years of free professional data recovery. That is a feature usually reserved for enterprise-class storage, and shows that they are confident in the reliability of their product. Highly recommend this product, especially if your fault tolerance is lower than the average person upgrading a PlayStation 5. One thing is that I wish I hadn't gotten the one with the heatsink. It was a PIA to install, and the heatsink that came with my motherboard is sitting in its box now. The standard one wasn't available at the time unfortunately. Other than that, my only regret is not opting for a 4tb unit. Lol. ... show more
