  • Merry Xmas to ME! Drives inside (Review for 14TB External STEB14000402)
I bought 2 of these from Amazon for the purpose of shucking them & using inside my case as internal SATA drives. To my great delight the drives inside were "Seagate IronWolf Pro 14TB NAS" 7200rpm Internal Hard Drives! (See pics. I numbered my drive & blacked out identifying #s. for pics here) ...The drives were NEW and Pristine. The model externals I bought had the STEB14000402 model number, but I notice those don't seem to be available right now on Amazon since my last purchase. The 14TB external available now is: # STEB14000400. So maybe the STEB14000402 models, at least right now, may have the IronWolf Pro's in them. ...I believe this just varies at any given time though depending on what Seagate has available at the time of manufacture. But you will get I think, either these 7200rpm IronWolf Pro's OR an Exos 7200rpm drive in these externals no matter what the model # is for the 14TB external. ...It seems to be just "Luck of the draw"! In any case, shucking took 5-10 minutes and the drives do not need any special partitioning or formatting etc. once shucked and installed as bare drives. Windows 10 recognized them the same as when they were attached via USB 3.0 and they are VERY fast! ...The NEW Ironwolf Pro's are around $200 - $250 MORE if you buy the bare drives. By shucking the externals, you will save a BUNDLE. However, as most who would attempt this know, you will VOID ANY WARRANTY on the drives. The case tabs are going to break when they are shucked/removed from the external enclosures (They are designed that way!) ...So you COULD still put it back together to use for yourself for other drives etc., but you could NOT put the original drive back in and send back to Seagate for warranty repair. They would KNOW it had been shucked is the point. But any drive failure would most likely occur after the 1st year anyway, and that's all the Externals are covered for. ...Just be sure to check your new external using "CrystalDiskInfo" and maybe "Seatools" before shucking to check for any issues or bad sectors etc. that it could have left the factory with. Check them BEFORE you remove from enclosure! ...These do work great and very fast as just USB 3 externals btw. But if you're brave enough I say "Shuck it"! ... show more

  • Slow transfer and download speed
Color: Black Capacity: 16TB Style: Desktop HDD
it works, and it is really 16 TB, but the speed to transfer or download anything on it, takes a while.

  • It works... but it is SO DAMN LOUD
Color: Black Capacity: 16TB Style: Desktop HDD
I've had this for two years. It's serving its purpose. It works quickly and I can even run Final Cut Pro while referencing files on it pretty smoothly most of the time (as long as I have enough memory free). However, it is so ***ing loud. I also use it for my Time Machine backups, so it's actively writing a few times a day. It GRINDS, it CRUNCHES, it's SO distracting and honestly frays my nerves. However, I've been told by the company this is normal for mechanical drives. My previous Seagate of smaller capacity didn't sound CLOSE to this-- maybe a bit of buzzing when it whirred on for a backup but this is crazy. I'm a content creator, so I have to actually disconnect it while I'm filming or recording in the same room because even my directional microphone picks up the noise when pointed in the opposite direction. I've tried dampening the sound by putting it on top of silicone which helps but it's still craziness. It starts as a small annoyance, and the value almost seems worth it. But I'm looking for a replacement due to how distracting the noise is all day long. If you're using for time machine backups, I'd look elsewhere. ... show more

  • Still a great Exos X16. **Warranty no longer showing valid HDD S/N***
Color: Black Capacity: 16TB Style: Desktop HDD
Have 5 of these drives now, 4 I bought early last year, and 2 I just bought to add to my server. In early 2020, if you added the X16's serial number into Seagate's online warranty checker (or add to your account), the warranty would come up as ~2-2.5 years; odd it wasn't the full 3 for the X16, but it was more than the 1 year that the Seagate Expansion drive's S/N comes up with. I chalked that up to manufacturing time between the drive being made and it going in to the Expansion. That isn't the case anymore. When I went back into my Seagate account to add the two I just bought, I noticed that the other 3 now showed warranties had ended in 4/2020. Same happened when I tried to add the new ones. Other I drives I had were now accurate. I removed all the drives, and re-added them with the Expansion S/N's, and all obviously still come up with their respective 1 year warranty expiration dates. Moral of the story? Still a great drive at better price than can be had otherwise. The shorter warranty is what it is; it sucks, but doesn't really surprise me. Just want others to be aware of it :-). However, if you intend to use the X16 without the included Expansion case, you had better hang on to that case for a year (or at least the bottom half if you have more than 1). ... show more

  • Got 16TB but theres 2TB missing.
Color: Black Capacity: 16TB Style: Desktop HDD
I havent used it much and recently I used it with my computer which told me its true max capacity. I bought the 16TB one and its actually only 14TB. Its past its return date by about a year or so and I came on to amazon to give a not so great review until I saw how much the price has changed and now I feel lucky with the 14TB lol. I bought it new for $300 and saw its now almost $700 so I will happily keep the 14TB LOL. Also, I saw several reviews saying that it sucks because of how much noise it makes but honestly, I like the noise because it lets me know that it is working without having to make sure the little blue light is on to say its working. And plus its not that loud, just a bunch of low volume thud like sounds. Other than that I do love this device, since I bought this thing, I have only been using Seagate external drives. ... show more

  • Great for the most part, But…
Color: Black Capacity: 10TB Style: Desktop HDD
Love the extra space. Bought this as an external hard drive for my Xbox Series X and the 10TB was just what I needed. Still have 3TB remaining. However the only con and might be a big one for you as I wasn’t aware before purchasing, is that this hard drive makes noise. Every time it’s “working” you hear it come to life. This isn’t a SSD or utilize flash storage, but I wasn’t aware that it would make noise whenever it’s used. ... show more

  • This drive is a TANK!
I bought 2 of these drvies; 16TB a couple months ago and the 14TB last week-ish. They ARE, IN FACT, Seagate EXOS series drives in the enclosure (7200RPM 256MB cache). I moved all of my TV shows to the 16TB and Movies to the 14TB. Neither drive has pegged out when accessing from multiple sources using Emby... i'm talking about 10-15% average when hitting the drive over the network from 3 separate households. The raw/usable space isn't what's advertised most likely because of over-provisioning and/or error correcting seeing as how these drives are used primarily in data centers; hence the speed and the fact that they are helium sealed. 14TB and 16TB is too big of a drive to risk losing that much data in one whack! Read/Write speeds are on par with what is advertised... something around 220MB/s or so (I haven't checked in a while, but it's up there). Alls I can say is, if you need the space AND the speed, possibly even for gaming, these drives don't disappoint and as long as they are still in production I will always buy EXOS drives from now on :) ... show more

  • Died after about 14 months of use
Color: Black Capacity: 10TB Style: Desktop HDD
Used for additional storage for the xbox one worked great but died without warning after about 14 months of use. I had it on a surge protector and it was kept on a open shelf for ventilation and was not dropped. I really have no clue why it failed but I suspect an internal short circuit somewhere in the product. ... show more
