  • A Real battery charger
If you spent any kind of time around real working auto repair shops growing up or even had an uncle or father that was into such you probably remember the big roll-around battery chargers everyone had. They were usually beat to death looking and filthy but would charge or start anything from a little import car up to a semi. One of the keys to these guys effectiveness was what you have here, manual control. And while that is a bit of a double-edged sword and there is a place in the world for small digital automatic battery chargers, this isn't that. This is legit. Pro's: Sturdy housing and handle, unless you beat it with a hammer you aren't going to hurt it dragging it around to wherever it needs to be. The clamps feel sturdy, no plastic or light weight metal. The cable and power cord length are enough to make things happen as needed. It's heavy. 40lbs or so, and not unlike car batteries weight is a good sign in a battery charger. High jump-starting amperage, way more than you're likely to need or get from most little jump packs and such. Con's: This is nitpicking but the wheels on the one I got are not as large as pictured, and bragged about, on the box. They roll fine but if you're trying to cruise over broken ground or air hoses laying across a shop floor it might be a little lacking. Did not come with a user manual. Granted it's pretty self-explanatory and if not, you can google it and find out what you need to know, but still. This is really nitpicking but the sticker on the face of the unit where the controls are is installed crooked, I always hate to see a lack of attention to detail and QC like that. It's not the end of the world, but I noticed. While the clamps are solid and the cables to them are of adequate size and plenty pliable, the sold point of support is the solder joint where they attach to the clamps. I'm going to zip tie or something the insulated part of the wire to the clamp for long term durability, but someone should have noticed that. There is a loop of steel wire that might have offered some support if the wire was larger, but it does not as delivered. Fixable but of note. The box says compatible with AGM and gel and other types of batteries but there is no setting for such, I have plenty of battery tenders that figure it out on their own so many this one does to. This last isn't really a con, but you need to know how to read an amp gauge and interpret what it's telling you in relation to how the battery is charging. This is how it was done before the advent of automatic digital chargers and it's perfectly fine, even an asset in my opinion, but you kind of need to know how to read it and pick the charge time from the timer control. Again, nothing you can't google up and learn. All in all, good stuff and a happy addition to my shop. I am a little puzzled at this particular model number not being listed on Schumacher's website, but it isn't unusual for vendor specific models of things to be made these days, just slightly annoying. If you want/need a burley, real manual battery charger you could do a lot worse than this one. ... show more

  • Mostly easy to use. The timer is tricky.
Okay so this is fairly easy to use. It is easy to read and easy to maneuver as well. The manual timer is nice, but one downfall with it, is that you really have to know how long you need to charge the battery for. Which can be tricky to calculate. It performs well and produces good results. The price would be high for a 12 volt, but this goes up to a 24 volt battery, so the price is pretty decent, considering that. So overall, the quality is nice. ... show more

  • Gets the job done and is easier to move around and set up than older units.
Made in Mexico, this is a plastic-shelled wheeled battery charger/jump starter. It has a bit more power than a similarly sized Craftsman unit that I've had for 20 years or so. That unit is all metal and can be a beast to move around while this Schumacher unit can easily be lifted up to get over obstacles. The Schumacher also has far more flexible battery attachment cables, making use of the cables much easier than with the old Sears unit. Further, it can be set for lower power charging, higher power charging, or for jump starting - and it has a timer, so you can't walk away and forget all about the fact that you've got a battery on charge in the garage. The ammeter works comparably to most battery chargers, gradually dropping down as the battery charges, but otherwise providing little information about the battery's overall condition. I'd love to see a digital readout instead of the analog dial, with intermittent displays of the battery's resting voltage (during a break in the charging process). It would also be nice to have a smart processor in line with the charger so that batteries cannot be charged too fast or for too long. That said, so long as you have some battery charging experience, this unit lets you individualize the output sufficiently. My test on a couple of old batteries on my shop shelf suggests that the unit works properly and achieves the desired goals. I've got some user interface issues with it - the handle comes up and locks into place but doesn't seem to have any way of going back down - I can't find a release anywhere. The wrap points for the AC cord aren't large enough to truly hold onto the cord. The clamp points for holding the battery clamps don't quite work given the form factor of the clamps. Of course, my old Sears unit doesn't have a set of wrap points or clamping points, so the mere fact that they exist on the Schumacher is a nod in the right direction. I'm pleased with the wheels and the ease of juggling it among the other gear in the shop, so that's a big plus. And the plastic shell won't ever rust or corrode, so that's a good point as well. ... show more

  • Let's try this one again...
I've owned the same thing from the same manufacturer just an older model. That model lasted me only about a year before it just stopped working one day. I'm hoping it was a fluke and am willing to give it another shot because I see their stuff everywhere in the automotive battery charging space for years. It was right outside their warranty period when I called them. I like the fact that this can charge my regular 12v car stuff but has an option for 24v for some bigger vehicle types like larger diesel trucks. This is a mechanical charging unit meaning you have to have a basic understanding of what you are doing and what you need. There is no computer to help you here. The advantages are these types of manual chargers tend to last a lot more time due to the simplistic design. The disadvantages are obviously no protection or fallback here like reverse hook-up protection. Overall I recommend and obviously, I cannot comment on the reliability of this new unit yet. Only time will tell on that on. ... show more

  • I'm happy with this jump starter
We have a box truck with 2 batteries that keeps draining and we are yet to find the problem. I was so happy when I saw this available for me to test. It came right on time. It jumped start my drained batteries quickly, and it's easy to use.
