  • Brings back dead batteries
Great charger, light years ahead of other chargers I've had. Brought back a very dead deep cycle. I bought a renewed unit and it had a generic manual packaged with it that caused a lot of confusion initially but found the correct version online. Overall a way beyond my expectations.

Charging a car battery

  • Does Its Job But With a Few Quirks
I received the charger today and tested it on a 900 CCA flooded lead acid (FLA) battery. This is a very large 3-month-old battery, installed in a vehicle that gets only occasional use. The car’s alternator, running at 14.1 volts, can’t keep the battery fully charged at below freezing temperatures. When first connected, the charger displayed 12.4 volts and a state of charge of around 70 percent. To observe the charger’s performance, I placed a DC ammeter on one of the cables, and a voltmeter across the terminals. The charger began charging a few seconds after the battery type and charge rate were selected. Almost immediately, the voltage increased to 15.5 volts, and current increased to 5.8 amps – within my expectations. What I didn’t expect was the charger shutting off after only 15 minutes, and illuminating the green “charge complete” LED. A battery this big, at 70 percent, would have needed several hours to charge at the 6 Amp rate. I unplugged the charger, waited a couple of minutes, and then reconnected. The charger began charging again, at 15.5 volts. It continued charging at the same voltage for about an hour, while the current tapered from 5.8 amps down to 3.8 Amps. At that point, with the charge indicator showing 98 percent, the charger again shut down, illuminating the green LED. It seemed odd that the charge terminated while still running at 3.8 Amps. I’m guessing that the charger was sensing the charging current’s rate of change, and terminated the charge when the current became sufficiently stable. The battery has been off the charger for 8 hours. I removed the surface charge with a 100-amp load, and then tested the battery on a digital analyzer. The battery now shows an open circuit voltage of 12.69 volts and SOC of 100 percent. The charger seems to have done its job, despite some “flaky” behavior. When I called Schumacher’s customer support line to speak with them about the issues, I had to listen to a “YOUR CALL IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US PLEASE STAY ON THE LINE” recording, repeated over a hundred times, before I finally had to hang up the phone. A half hour of my time was wasted during the unanswered phone call. The lack of customer support didn’t inspire my confidence in the brand. ... show more

  • I like the older chargers from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Built better, lasted longer.
In the past, all I had to do was connect the cables and plug it in. For starting mode, you flipped a switch. AND THEY TOOK A BEATING. This one was exciting at first because it was new. I liked the fact you could turn it on and off and check the battery voltage etc. But soon I realized the LED display can't be read in the sun light. Switching from 30 amps to 100 amps was frustratingly slow. It wouldn't always take a charge if the battery was too dead. I would have to baby the charger until it took hold. All these things are just my frustrating opinion and I would have given it a 5 star rating over all despite my dislike of the display and settings. It did charge my batteries and the 100 amp start worked better than my old charger, but my old charger was 30 years old, had been run over twice, left in the rain, dropped out of the bucket of my tractor, and still worked when I bought this charger, but it was mangled pretty badly. This charger is 3 years old, never dropped, never ran over, never left in the rain. But it's dead. It won't charge. 3 years is all I got out of this cheaply built piece of ****. But that's par for the course. It seems like nothing is built the way it used to be. ... show more

  • Sturdier than the smaller ones
The smaller ones have served for approx five years each, before I accidentally pulled the plastic charging handles off. These handles are much stronger and worth the additional money. PS. I am not a mechanically inclined woman or perhaps I could repair the inferior handles on the smaller chargers. Or, I will happily enjoy my new durable handles. ... show more

  • Portability.!!!!!!
I was in need of a battery charger/ engine starter, in the beginning is my research, I was looking to purchase a wheeled unit that would be stored in my garage until needed, when needed would roll to the vehicle. I also own a boat that requires 4 batteries, if there was a need to use a battery starter on the docks, I would be able to wheel it down. Also the batteries on the boat and motorcycle are AGM, I would need a unit that had the capability to charge and start both, ( most charger/starter won’t do both) with a little more research, I found the Schumacher SC1308. It's a small unit from a company that’s been around forever, trusted mechanics I deal with, stating if they were to purchase, this would be one unit they would. They also stated to have the capacity to charge different battery classes, with the extra boost amperage, would be an excellent choice. Also explained the options to be able to tell you the state of the batteries, with the auto 6 or 12 volt charging, timer, and the ability to pick it up with one hand transporting any where without carrying a big bulky unit around works for me. One Caveat though they sell two units almost identical to each other with this unit having the higher boost capacity with the other having I believe only 30 Amps. But make no mistake this unit needs to be plugged into AC current for its operation, it’s not a portable starter unit that you would keep in your glove box of your vehicle. All in all I think it’s a great unit with many operations that it will automatically do for you to give you a well rounded review of your battery while charging or starting ... show more
