  • works GREAT, will charge a completely dead battery
I bought this battery charger because my previous, very old, charger finally stopped working. I purchased a different battery charger first but then realized that it would NOT charge a completely dead battery. This was one of the very few battery chargers on the market that will charge a completely dead battery. A battery charger that won't do this is worthless to me as I usually only get out my battery charger when I have a dead battery. Other than that this battery charger is very easy to use, reads out the charging current and battery voltage and even estimates how much the battery is charged. It will automatically shut off when the battery is fully charged as well. When it detects that the battery is "sulfated," a condition where a battery will not charge properly, it goes into a mode to repair the battery. This is very handy for older batteries. It will charge as low as 2 amps to maintain a battery in storage and as high as 30 amps for a very fast charge. It also provides a 100 amp battery boost which is the equivalent of a "jump start" to start a near dead car battery immediately if you are close enough to a power plug to plug it in. The battery charger is also very rugged and, of course, quite heavy too. If you drop it, no worries. It has some advanced features to diagnose a bad car alternator but I have not used this yet. ... show more

  • Kept my car battery alive for several months
I have used different brands of battery chargers and for the most part they have been pretty similar in capability. In this case though, I needed charger that also maintains the battery as well, as I go out of town at times for long periods and have come back more often than not with a dead battery in my car, especially with more electronics than ever in both the car and with the devices you carry that drain your car battery faster than ever. I was looking specifically for something that was powerful, feature filled and easy to use, especially since someone in the family might need to deal with the device if I was gone. The quality of the battery charger is very good with a sturdy casing and good quality metal jumper clamps. It is powerful with 100A which worked for my SUV with no issues. I really like the diagnostics mode which tells you if the battery or alternator is bad as well as it can bring back nearly dead batteries back. The one thing I like the most is that it is basically plug and play, with everything automatically done. In my case, I bought this after I left, because even though the car was being regularly started, the battery went dead anyways. This not only brought the battery back to life, but maintained the battery until I returned several months later. My car started like it was new, so the maintainer did its job. The jump starter has safety features including reverse polarity protection assures that the jumper cables are connected correctly. Th jump starter has an LED battery level indicator lets you clearly see the status of the battery level with a percentage. Even though this is a good size and has some weight, it is not burdensome to carry or use as it has a nice ergonomic carry handle. One of the biggest surprises is that the warranty is only one year on this charger, especially considering the price as compared to other similar devices. Pros: Portable Well-made, good quality Safety features such as overcharging protection, overloading protection, and overheating protection. Good ergonomic handle Set of good quality metal clamps with built-in safety mechanisms to prevent reverse polarity Battery level percentage indicator Easy to use, easy to charge Feature packed Maintainer works great Can do diagnostics on battery and alternator Cons: Short warranty Expensive 5 stars ... show more

  • GOOD PRODUCT
WORKS GREAT AND EASY TO USE. GOOD QUALITY

  • Voltage is weird; instructions inadequate
I'm charging a 12v long-dead battery still in the car. There are NO instructions as to how to get the charger into desulphating mode, nor how to gently charge a long-dead battery. Without pressing any buttons, when the cord's hooked up, the unit drops almost immediately into 30A Boost / AGM battery / Charging mode, it seems without waiting 30 seconds (11.Power-up AutoStart) or 10 minutes (11.9) like the manual claims [update: for the other car I timed it. Now it's 30 sec. Subjective error, or?]. Then the unit readout says it's charging at 12 volts. But the actual charge at the terminals, while charging, with the clamps hooked up, is 15.5 volts. Maybe this is needed to kick-start the battery. I don't know. We'd need a chemical engineer battery specialist to cover this. But for a car electric system designed for 12 volts, it makes me feel uncomfortable that it might not be healthy for the car/battery. So I switched from 30A Boost to 6-12A Charge. Currently [har, har] the battery is charging at 13.8v, varying in a pulsing wave down to a couple volts every few seconds. Maybe this is finally the desulph mode, who knows. --Unit should reflect actual voltage at the terminals, not ideal desired voltage, while charging. Or at least alternate between the two of them, along with percent. --Percent charge seems way off, again reflects surface charge, not the deep state of the charge. --Manual needs clear instructions as to how best to recharge a drained battery, for the following two cases: (1) you care about the health of the battery, and want to renew it and get it up to speed, gently, safely, no matter how long it takes; (2) you don't care about damaging the long-term health of the battery, and want to charge it as fast as possible. These are complete opposites. Second one is probably covered by BOOST, but should mention you're going to keep damage on the battery. First one, the most likely scenario in '20 COVID with unemployment and folks not being able to afford a new battery, needs to be covered clearly in the manual and on Amazon. --Manual clearly says "if START button is not pressed within 30 seconds, but a battery is properly connected, the unit will automatically switch to CHARGER mode." If my observation was correct, this language should be edited to something like "...will automatically switch to CHARGER mode sometime within that 30 seconds." I could be wrong. --Manual and Amazon instructions need more discussion about how excess voltage is necessary to pack electricity into a battery that's trying to push it OUT by its own self; how high this voltage can get; why it's not being reflected in the machine display; and steps taken by the manufacturer to avoid excess battery overcharging, also overheating. --Note a very-fast-charged battery will maintain relatively high voltage on the surface terminals for a while, but not have a strong charge on the deep parts. It all depends on the amount of amp-hours you push into it. Voltage is like the water-pressure on a hose, while amp current is the flow rate in "gallons" of electrons, basically how fat the hose is. You can have a high-pressure waterpik or power scrubber with a tiny diameter, that really pushes the water out hard, but not a lot of it. That's high voltage, low amp current, like most of the dinky 0.5A chargers on the market. You can have a fat firehose turned on low that gives you lots of gallons but no pressure. That's what you want normally, that's high amps and low voltage. Fills up your battery reasonably fast. A 30A system at 15 volts is 450 watts, that's half a hairdryer, that's a firehose turned on medium high. Good for filling up a bucket fast, but you wouldn't shower your aging grandmother with it. A compact car might have a 70 amp-hour battery, so if it's almost half-drained to 40 AH remaining, the 30A boost will take an hour to top it off. And if it's almost completely dead at only 10AH left, the 30A boost might in theory take 2 hours to fill it (30 + 30), back of envelope estimate, ignoring "stadium-filling" charging effects. But I'm not sure how good that is for the long-term health of an aging battery. So I'd really appreciate clear step-by-step instructions on how to desulphate a battery with this unit. Thanks so much. ... show more
