  • Solid charger that seems to be built to last...
I had another electronic style charger, purchased a few years ago from Sam's Club. Not bad, just not durable and it gave up the ghost... I was referred to Schumacher by some friends in the auto repair business and wanted a unit that was reliable and was versatile, charging different types and sizes of batteries. We have a vehicle and a motorcycle that doesn't get used regularaly and I needed to be able to top off various batteries. 1st impressions, this thing is HEAVY compared to other brands! Not a big surprise since I have to assume they use a more robust transformer than other brands. On the flip side, the battery leads are lighter and smaller than I would have expected. They work great and since Schumacher has been doing this for quite a few decades, I'm sure they will work well for the long haul- I just expected larger gauge wires and larger clips. As a plus, the smaller clips actually are easier to connect to various batteries, especially if they are still installed (motorcycle). Other surprise is this thing is loud, with a constant hum when plugged in. It is normal based on the transformer, but it is different than the cheaper chargers out there. This is not a bad thing, just a little different. I have already used this charger on a truck battery and a couple smaller batteries with no problems. It works as advertised and quickly. I like the fact that it will automatically charge then shift to a float charge mode and includes a desulfide mode if needed. Since some of my stuff sits (bike and lawn mower) the desulfide function is great to recover a battery. Haven't tested the start function and likely won't but it's there if needed... Overall, pleased and would buy again. ... show more

  • solid despite some negative reviews
This one was highly rated on other website reviews. Here at amazon there were some very harsh negative reviews so I was cautious, but still felt this was the best purchase for a car battery charger. GOOD: - automatically changes to float mode after full charge - some diagnostic tools, shows voltage (approx only) and % charge. i've not used the alternator check yet. - has a desulfination mode which is nice - can jumpstart a car, but i haven't used. I have a Clore JNC300XL Jump-N-Carry which I've used dozens of times and it works amazingly well already for jumping BAD: - cord length is decent but could be better - clips are a bit small but they work - lettering is kind of small on the label, but i can see it fine, LED numbers are big and bright - does have a gentle humming sound, not annoying at all or high pitched. i don't mind TIPS ON USE: - to attach -- attach red, then black, then plug in (plug is 2 prong by the way) - to detach -- unplug, then detach black, then red - always defaults to diagnostic mode when first plugged in, voltage shows, AGM mode. I like to change to % (left button), standard battery (middle button), small battery (right button). This has charged my honda pilot battery in less than 1-2 hours typically from a low 9% capacity. I believe a low Amp charge creates less wear and tear on the battery over time and generates less heat as well. - people have said it "freezes" while charging. Actually when charging the middle LED stays solid. Mine "freezes" occasionally (often at 80-90%) but the middle LED starts blinking. This is de-sulfination mode. After a while it continues until 100% and the middle LED becomes solid again. - one time I did get a bad battery indicator, but I had turned on my car lights while charging. I think it got messed up. I would make sure all lights and car devices are turned off before attaching this thing OVERALL: I only use it for car batteries and it works perfectly. Nice to know I can charge other options, but I haven't tested any. My car battery is good still (per sam's club battery guys) but I noticed I had to jump it a lot because kids left lights on a bunch. This has fixed my problem and allows my battery to tolerate much better accidental trickle drains. The bad reviews that said it malfunctioned while charging (freeze problem), overcharged, overheated... I did not find to be a problem. I strongly recommend reading the directions front to back first time. I can strongly recommend this for car battery charging usage. Would not use a trickle charger though for cars not often driven as there are cheaper and more energy efficient models for that purpose. ... show more

  • A lot better than I had!
Out of the box I was impressed. Heavy and rugged enough to handle the jobs I would put it to. What I replaced was a homemade charger that has worked for 30 years and is the same today. I went with a replacement because of over the years the batteries have changed and gotten more sophisticated and need more than turn it on and come back tomorrow and its ready. On the two batteries I tried, a small gel cell and my regular truck battery, both charged and the charger completed and all looks great. The problem was (and still is) a minor one; the digital readout on the second number, the top center bar does not light so sometimes you might think the battery is at 40% but it is really at 90% or vice versa until something changes and then you can tell for sure. 100% looks like 1U0% but understandable. Not something I would ship it back for but should be better. Maybe something happened in shipping but doubtful. I have a problem seeing the very small print on the front so I am going to use my P-touch labeler to make labels big enough to read with these tired eyes. I wouldn't think the font needs to be that small and a red background with white letters just doesn't cut it for me. I will be working on a few more batteries in the future so I may post other results or comments. Update. I did ship it back for the digital readout problem (suggested by Schumacher) and Amazon was great (as usual) about the whole thing. I got the new one in just a few days and it is working great! Had to make P-touch labels again and that helps a lot. I did email Schumacher about the font and colors and they said they are working on changing this. I tested the charger on more batteries and I do admit it is basically hands free and does a great job. I did take it apart and peek in and looks to be top notch. I recommend it. ... show more
