I bought the unit based on a response from the supplier that it would automatically adjust charge current for different batteries. The charge voltage is high--I measured close to 16V when trying to charge an 8 Amp-Hour Gel Cell. Measured with a calibrated Fluke multimeter. That is much higher than recommended for a gel cell, and may cause damage. It may be OK for larger automotive batteries which might survive the larger charge voltage. Also tried it on several other small batteries and it declared them defective. Though I was able to charge them fine with a different charger. Maybe I just got a defective charger, but I was disappointed, as I have always trusted Schumacher chargers. Actually I wish they were less automatic and gave the user more access to settings.     • Great value, and not just for farm use.
I bought this because I needed a second charger/maintainer for the garage. I keep an older battery on hand in the event that I need to jump start a car or take advantage of accessing a power source for mild-moderate use without having to run long extension cords. It indicates that it’s for farm use, but I find it works particularly well for what I need it to do. I hooked this up to an (almost) dead car battery (about 6v) as soon as I got it. I would have expected it to take about 10-12 hours to charge, but it had it fully charged in just under 9. That it self-adjusts its output based upon the batter its charging is really helpful. Additionally, I like the hanger feature. It seems pretty strong, but I don’t know how it would hold up under heavy use. Still, for my purposes, it works well to hang on the open hood of the car or on a hanger above the battery that I’m charging. I don’t have a lot of room in my garage, so I can’t really set aside space just for charging a battery and I need to take advantage of any spaces I have. For me, the battery sits on top the bottom plate of the garage wall (that, in turn sits on the cinder block foundation). The charger then hangs above this, keeping the cables out of the way and between the wall studs. The clamps and cables appear of good quality, and even though the clamps are a bit on the small size, they gripped the battery terminals without any problem. Overall, I have so far found this to be a pretty good value for the price. Again, I’m not sure how well it would do under heavy use. I’ve never worked at a farm, but I understand it can be brutal on equipment. For me though, it’s great for tighter spaces where one might need to charge a battery and not have to walk in and around cables (either on the floor or on a table/bench). ... show more

I don't have a farm - BUT I do have a couple acres that need mowing about 10 months a year (Thank You Florida sunshine!). This "Schumacher 12V Fully Automatic Battery Charger and Maintainer " keeps both mower batteries charged and ready for their weekly use. I use the large riding mower (Lawn Tractor) for the majority of the property and a smaller one for around the house and flower beds. I keep this charger on the bigger mower so that it's ready to start, then switch it over to the smaller mower so that it will be ready for the detail mowing. The length of the cables makes it easy to switch over to a different piece of equipment without having to move the equipment or the charger. This charger is really easy to hook-up and use safely and the mowers are always ready - even when I'm not...... The plastic hook for hanging is very convenient for hanging the charger. It keeps it upright and visible as well as easily accessible. The only comment /concern I have is that the hook is made of plastic and I'm not sure about its longevity and/or durability after constant exposure to the outdoor heat and sun. Most of the time, a battery maintainer will only have a very low trickle output of around 1.5A, which is fine for maintaining a charged battery, but wouldn't be practical to use as a charger. This unit, rated for 5A output, could actually be used as a reasonably respectable charger for smaller 12V batteries. I wanted a second maintainer so I no longer have to share a single unit between my portable generator and my lawn mower. Compared to my old one, this one is so much more convenient to use with my lawn mower, because I have a pegboard wall in my garage, and the integrated hook makes it easy to hook it in place on the wall. I also really like the fact that there is a start/stop button on it so I can turn off the charger with one press when I need to mow the lawn (my old maintainer would have to be unplugged to turn it off). I'm not so sure that the plastic quality of the hook would stand up to heavy commercial abuse in a farm setting, but if it's set in one place to stay put, it should work great. I've known the Schumacher brand for a long time as making high quality battery chargers, but this is the first one I've owned, and I'm quite pleased with it. ... show more
