It’s precisely what I was after. The way my desk is setup I needed a hub with the HDMI on the end such as this so cables wouldn’t be crimped at odd angles. Additionally, and one thing I couldn’t confirm before buying, the USB-C (output) will charge another device using the power from the laptop. I charge my 12.9 iPad in this manner; the caveat is the wattage is a trickle in comparison to the conventional charger, but it does work. ... show more

My use: Power to '19 macbook pro; driving external monitor, driving external camera - after 2 days of use (maximum 5 hours), the device started to act flaky. It heated up very much adn stopped processing the camera signal consistently first, then power got glitchy... Depending on your use this may be wonderful, but my use was apparently too heavy for this device. ... show more

I purchased this to use with my new iPad Pro 12.9 and conventional computer desk equipment. Paired with the appropriate power level AC adapter (60W or greater power adapter) works perfect as it should. Connect monitor with HDMI cable and boom - screen image is mirrored to the monitor as well as sound. If your external monitor doesn't have speakers, the iPad will not produce sound through its speakers. To work around this I recommend connecting some USB speakers to your monitor. This item allows this type of use while either charging the iPad or using the power from being plugged in. In addition, there are a variety of ports on the dock that the iPad doesn't have allowing for greater flexibility use of the iPad. ... show more

[EDIT ON THE REVIEW] Contacted customer service and it seems that sometimes you need to reset your USB-C ports, which also seems to be a limitation of the standard USB-C. In any case, customer service advised me to follow a simple procedure and the adapter works again. Why doesn't Satechi make this guidance public? Or part of the FAQs when you buy the adapter? At the end of the day, customer service rocked and that's the reason for 5 stars. ----- Initially, I was very happy with my purchase as it would work flawlessly. 98% of its use was to connect my MacBook Pro to an external monitor. Today, the adapter won’t even turn on the blue light indicating it is connected to my laptop. I understand adapters may have a lifespan but this one is not even 5 months with very light use. Style and looks are not more important than durability, especially when you pay premium-price. Wouldn't buy again - total disappointment. ... show more
