  • Great little HD Clock Radio
We have had the Sangean HD Clock radio for about 1 month now, so it is time to write a review. Bottom line, we like it quite a bit and are happy with it. We have been wanting an HD radio for quite a while and when we saw this one on Amazon we thought it was worth a try. We live in a large metro area so there are quite a few HD radio stations and the signals are strong; we thought it would work OK. It is better than OK, the reception is excellent and the speakers are very clear. The first HD station I tuned to is a classical opera station, just to see how good the speaker really is and it is excellent. I had this little radio playing in a room with cathedral ceilings and it filled the room. Not like a full stereo system, but pretty impressive. We actually use it for a bedside clock tuned to the HD news in the morning - no more garbled talk. It does come with an instruction manual, and it is a little challenging to set up at first, but you do get used to the sequencing. It has 3 alarms - the radio comes on softly at first and then moves up to volume, i like that feature. It also has a weekday/weekend setting for the alarms. It is quite a bit smaller than what was described (I think they gave the box dimensions, not the clock). The only issue I have seen, is that when you lose power, you get to reset the clock. We lost power to the house a few times when we first got it (storms), so we got used to setting it up. ... show more

  • Important: this radio is missing a battery backup!
First, it's a clock radio, so I am okay with its sound quality. It has three alarms, which is one more than I needed, but okay. It seems like there are a lot of steps to setting the alarm(s), but after you've done it a couple of times it's easy. I can receive HD subchannels, which is what I wanted. I had to play with the display brightness and contrast settings until I found something that works for me. BUT....if you experience power outages this may not be for you because it has NO BATTERY BACKUP. I woke up one morning to find that the clock went back to dashes. All settings and presets were gone. I'll keep the radio, but I will be sure to use a backup alarm on my phone for those important appointments. ... show more

  • Excellent HD receiver, easy to setup for me
Replaced a 15 year old Boston Acoustics Recepter HD, which is in a comatose state...wanted a decent radio with HD FM. This one does not disappoint. I was a little skeptical on FM reception with just a wire antenna and no provision for an external. The Boston REQUIRED the included wire dipole to be hung on the wall/window. The Sangean can receive all the local FM HDs and some distant ones with the little piece of wire hanging off the night table. Didn't even need to tack it in place. Excellent selectivity as well. AM is pretty good too, though there is local HD AM around here, but analog stations come in very well considering the high noise environment of the typical home. It was easy to setup. Never opened the manual. The display is kind of bright even on it's lowest setting. As far as the sound quality, well it's a small clock radio with a mono speaker. 1.4 watts of rated output. It's loud but not blasting and well, a clock radio. That being said, it does have a line level out and piped into a good stereo receiver or amplified speaker, it is a GREAT HD tuner for under a hundred bucks. You can also plug stereo headphones into it and enjoy pretty decent stereo sound. Considering HD radio choices of CURRENT design are limited, Sangean seems to be the ONLY reputable company making HD radios and I am glad they are still coming out with new models using current HD radio chipsets and modern electronics. The only other choices are decade and a half NOS or used stuff that has buggy software and first gen receivers which aren't as sensitive and won't last and have no factory support. ... show more

  • A great value in a HD clock radio, withpoor sound quality
Thanks to non-profit WCLV and public radio stations WCPN and WKSU, Cleveland and Northeast Ohio has been an amzingly strong region for classical music on the radio. For decades my clock radios have always been chosen for their good sound quality. But as of late March, broadcast classical music from midnight to 6 am, would be available only on HD radio. The Sangean HDR-15 HDR-15, the lowest-cost HD clock-radio, was my first purchase to deal with this situation. Its electronics were good and it's a lot of radio for the money. But the HDR-15's little speaker and small plastic enclosure can't produce good, clear, easy-to-listen-to sound. I returned it and bought the Sangean HDR-18 HD Radio. ... show more
