I have an iMac 2020 27" Retina display with an internal 512 GB SSD and no way to add additional internal storage (I picked up the iMac 2020 at a too-good-to-be-true price from a friend of a friend for this reason). I've been using a SAMSUNG T7 2TB SSD for 16 months on my iMac as permanent external storage for home directories instead. Fortunately the iMac 2020 has a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s) port and it works as desired with the SAMSUNG's USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. In testing I measured 850-860 MB/s (Write) and 900+ MB/s (Read) on the T7 configured as an unencrypted APFS volume on my iMac 2020; that's reasonably close to the maximum vendor-claimed 1,000 MB/s speeds. Overall system performance configured this way has been great with two caveats: 1) The iMac must be configured to mount home directory volume(s) on the external SSD at boot time or else intermittent problems occur, and 2) iCloud Keychain for home directories on external volumes stopped working with the Monterey 12.6.4 update the end of March 2023 but was restored to proper functioning in the Monterey 12.6.5 update that came out on April 10th. I *think* Apple more or less officially supports home directories on alternative volumes, but not all of the support staff are familiar with this configuration. (Before buying the SAMSUNG T7 I had attempted to build a DIY Fusion Drive using the internal SSD and an external USB rotating rust drive to replicate the pleasurable combination of SSD and rotating rust I had in my older 2014 iMac. Although this seemed possible (and appeared to build correctly), each attempt I made failed in unexpected ways when put into use. Since my family has way too much data to put us all on the 512 GB internal SSD, and I was unwilling to go back to rotating rust performance, I opted to go for an external SSD for user home directories. So originally I had a harsh paper weight review from confusion and not being as tech savy as I thought. However, after toggling and playing I was able to figure this little piece out. Helpful hints, avoid videos and customer service unless you need an adapter for an older phone. There is an app in the play store that is the samsung portable ssd, initially I thought with the app it would have formatted some type of opening functions, but after plugging in the t7, on samsung at least go to your my filed in your samsung, you'll see the t7 (under a USB addition). Copying and moving filed was frustrating at first with little guidance, but you'll go to your folder (photos, text etc) and click on it, I was moving one at a time and finally got to the setting to group the photos, long hold and select, select all, press copy (or move but I'm too nervous for that move) and then it does transfer files insanely fast. It's my first day so Idk about how successful and I had alot of issues with the cord saying removed unsafely restart phone while the t7 light was on and connected fine. Overall, before giving up, keep toggling, watch a few YouTube videos and this this cqn be amazing and I'm hoping to keep safe memories available and be able to reflect on my life moments. ... show more

When reliability matters, this probably your first and last product for SSD storage. The 2TB storage is more than plenty in terms of volume of storage but the fast record rate is really the beauty with this product. Having used this for over a year now in a 2022 Tesla Model X, the T7 SSD is the perfect companion for any Tesla. With up to six cameras recording simultaneously at any given moment while in drive or in park with the car's sentry mode, this SSD has stood up to any scenario thrown at it. With hot trips to Las Vegas and Fresno in the middle of summer, or winter trips to Yosemite, this SSD is able to survive the ambient temperatures from the long days or long nights from being parked outdoors. I've purchased a number of lower cost large capacity SSDs (external and internal) and have to say I've been quite dissapointed over the long haul. But when I saw Samsung on the label, I just had to try it. I'm coming up on the end of month 4 and have had zero issues, something I can't say about some of the other large capacity SSDs. I'm using it to hold my virtual PCs images that I run using Oracle's Virtual Box and I love the response time. It's got decent speed and have yet to find it anything other than very close to room temperature. When I'm looking for another drive, I'll be buying one of these. ... show more

It doesn't get hot, it just works. I really couldn't detect a faster speed of access by going solid-state. It has no moving parts so the chance of failure is greatly reduced which is why I bought this. When I connect it to my desktop Dell with a new solid state HD also in it, it still takes time to read all the files so you can access them. The files aren't unusually large. Reliability is the main reason I got this drive plus I can move it around to my other computers. The portability is very nice and necessary these days. When your HD goes out, it is a disaster, so do invest in a solid state drive before you wish you had. ... show more

    • Great SSD For Gaming - Runs A Little Warm

I have this as an external drive using a USB 3.0 connection on a Win 10 box. I am using it to store and run Steam downloaded PC games and it works great for that and has been flawless with zero issues. It does seem to get a little warm when transferring a lot of data so I just set it in one of these metal mesh business card holders to give it some ventilation which seems to be working well to keep it a bit cooler.
