I was looking for a replacement for my aging Nexus 7 tablet recently because the battery is going bad and the speakers are now rattly for some reason. I really only use a tablet for streaming video, web browsing, reading books, and listening to audiobooks. A big part of that usage is video streaming. Guess what this thing is TERRIBLE at? At first I thought I was having internet issues, but all my other devices streamed from any source just fine. This device, however, kept buffering all the time. This not only happened when streaming from a source on the internet, but also just from trying to view a video from my home server. I then began to suspect the wireless connection. That *seems* to be OK but regardless of whether or not I used 2.4 or 5GHz, it would still have trouble keeping up. The video player would have to stop and buffer ever thirty seconds or so, usually for another thirty seconds. Simply terrible. I also want to stress that this was not from one particular app, but from various video players, YouTube, and Crunchyroll. The performance was so bad that this is the first product I have ever returned to Amazon in the many years of heavy ordering that I've done through them. While I'm griping about this thing, the touchscreen seems sluggish and inaccurate, with no way to calibrate it that I could find. Also, the speakers are in a really bad location - both on the bottom (side) of the unit, so regardless of whether you are holding it in portrait or landscape, you are probably going to cover them with your hands. Seriously, how hard is it to think just a tiny, tiny bit about how your product is used? I really expected more from a name brand like Samsung. In short: DO NOT BUY THIS TABLET. There is nothing special about it and it is nothing but a disappointing. A tablet from a decade ago would still be a better choice. ... show more

This is my second Samsung Tab A. Loved my first one, until I accidentally dropped it into the laundry. So I purchased a new one (SM-T290) expecting the same performance or better. Unfortunately, the new one is a huge step backwards. UPDATE: Don't buy this edition. What should have been a great tablet was seriously misrepresented in Samsung's advertising. Even thought it has an SD card slot, you cannot move apps to it. There is not enough RAM (only 2GB) to allow it to perform reasonably – even browsing the web on the Chrome browser is very slow and very sluggish. It is not nearly as good as my 2017 Samsung Tab A. I'm also disappointed that it is missing features that were included with my 2017 version of the Samsung Tab A (SM-T380): 1) My old tablet had a USB-C port, the SM-T290 has old school mini USB port. 2) My 2017 tablet turned off/on when closing/opening the cover; closing the cover (a new one from the same company as my old one) on my new tablet doesn't turn the tablet off, so the battery runs out much too fast if I forget to manually turn it off. 3) The front camera on the new model is only 2 MP (old one was 5 MP), and 4) The new tablet at 1.1 lb is considerably heavier than the old one (0.79 lb). The new tablet runs on Android 9.0 (Pie), while the old one was Android 7.1. So I did get an upgraded operating system. I'm not techie enough to evaluate how the Qualcomm SDM429 Snapdragon 429, Quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53, compares to Qualcomm APQ8017 and Quad-Core 1.4GHz on the old one. I assumed that the new one would be faster but that's not been my experience. This does work good as a Kindle reader (if I can get books downloaded), but I'm having trouble getting my books moved to the SD card. Urgh! Don't buy this if you care about performance at all. I KNOW YOU MAY NOT THINK I'M REAL, BUT I LOVE THIS TABLET!!! My last tablet was stolen and I searched for a new one for months that was perfect with the perfect price. I needed a tablet to hold ALL of my apps (10 apps for bills, 3 social media apps, 15 shopping apps, Microsoft app for my book(s) I'm publishing, and at least 10 game apps for my kids) and I still have space. Love how light it is compared to the older model I have. Very fast processor and awesome screen, colors are nicely done. I do everything on this tablet instead of my cell phone. They Wifi card reaches a long way from my house which is a plus. You wont go wrong buying this product.

They finally moved the buttons onto the screen. No hardware navigation buttons. Love that. Very nice screen, clear, bright. What I don't like: 1: The screen seems to collect scratches easily. Can't see it with the screen on but they are there. 2: Occasionally a little slow...could use a faster processor. 3: At 5% the screen goes dim. There may be a way to turn that off. Have not found it yet. Overall I would buy again because there is very little at the same price point that can match it. I use it to surf news and to read Kindle books. Works fine for those activities. I have not played any games on it. ... show more
