  • The Classic Pens were scratchy and dry
Color: Artist's Gift Set 74-pc Size: 74 Count (Pack of 1) Style: Gelly Roll
When I received the package from Amazon, it had been ripped into, open, on my front porch. That was not a great start. But I thought that other companies can’t always be represented properly by Amazon and some of their tardo employees. No, I wasn’t late in getting to it. I brought it in within minutes of its arrival. I immediately proceeded to unpackage the Gelly Roll 74 Pen Set and enjoyed that a swatch card was presented along with the pens. It was helpful because hardly any of the pens were in their respective slots, which was incredibly annoying. It helped me at least to find out that I did, in fact, get all of the pens in the 74 Set I had ordered. Along with the Gelly Roll 74 Set, I had bought a cheaper set called Tanmit. On top of that, I bought a couple of packages of the Glaze Gelly Roll Set and a Gelly Roll Soufflé Set The worst of the Gelly Roll 74 Set was that all but two, the orange and the white, of the Classic Pens were scratchy and dry. So eight pens were more than terrible. Also, the burgundy is more like a dark brown, not a reddish purple color. Why don’t they call it dark brown! Oh brother! Moreover, I’m just not impressed with the Silver Shadow and the Gold Shadow Pens in that 74 set because the ink just creates a layer of metallic gold over a color (resting on top of five colors) and a layer of metallic silver (resting on top of five colors). The worst of them is the orange with the silver coating, that’s right silver not gold, on top of it. It was just ugly to be frank. What was slightly different, but still not great, was that each color left a kind of fine line of the color around each of the swatches. I could see that feature perhaps being appealing to people who just want to write letters or outline something with these pens...but not really for coloring because the layer of silver and gold weren’t uniform when laid down. They just looked splotchy and uneven. However, they weren’t scratchy. They did lay down effortlessly like most of the rest. The Moonlight Pens in the 74 set were great and so were the Stardust Pens in that set. The Stardust are basically Gelly Roll’s glitter pens. I do like that more of the Moonlight colors can be bought so there can be more of a variety of colors to be used on both white and black paper. I might actually buy them eventually. But as the Silver Shadow and the Gold Shadow Pens had an uneven finish so did the Metallic Pens. Again, these pens might be just fine for writing out letters but not really for coloring unless you are just going to use them for an outline of something. When I compared them to the ~$20 dollar set of the 120 Tanmit Gel Pens, I was even more disappointed in the Gelly Roll 74 Pen Set. This Tanmit Set pretty much all finished well, including its metallics, without looking uneven—except for what would be comparable to the Gelly Roll Classic Pens. They are called the Standard Pens and the Dyeware Pens. What is it with standard or classic gel pens or the like in sets that often seem to look awful? It’s just disappointing. But because I spent a FRACTION on them—than I did on the Gelly Rolls—for soooooooo many more pens, I would only be able to recommend the 120 Tanmit Pen Set over the Gelly Roll 74 Pen Set to others in good conscience. Also what was neato about the Tanmit Pens is that it has a bunch of Fluorescent Pens that finish with a beautiful colorful glittery effect that seems to match (though it may not) the colors of those pens, not just silver glitter added, as every other set—including its own—does to its Glitter Pens. (Wouldn’t it be better at least to add gold glitter to the warmer colors though, instead of just the silver glitter to ALL the glitter pens? I’m just sayin’!) It also had some gorgeous Neon Pens that laid down well, too, along with some pens called Pastel Pens that were comparable to the Gelly Roll Moonlight Pens. However, there just isn’t any more of them that can be bought to add to the group like we can the Gelly Roll Moonlight Pens. So the colors are a bit limiting. On top of that, there were some cool pens added to the Tanmit Set called Rainbow Pens. They are like the Pastel Pens in the Tanmit Set or like the Moonlight Pens in the Gelly Roll Set but have a swirl of colors that come out of them. I actually enjoyed them. Someone should capitalize on making a bunch more of those kinds of pens because there were only five. I dunno; maybe someone actually has. I haven’t really looked. The Gelly Roll Glaze Pen Set and Gelly Roll Soufflé Pen Set were just about all pretty great. My only complaint is that, in order to get all the colors in the Glaze Set, you have to buy another set of them which creates doubles. Just go and buy the missing colors individually. It’s just not worth it otherwise. It simply seemed dishonest or neglectful of the company to me not to have them all in just one set. My big complaint for both of these pen sets is that there is no comfort grip for each pen. I know that seems a bit picky, but when a person is coloring for hours, it can really help. I know because I bought a generic gel pen set from Hobby Lobby years ago that had these grips on them. I really enjoyed them. They no longer seem to sell the set. Otherwise I might likely buy them. I would be willing to pay more for this creature comfort in these newer sets. I’m more than sure I am not alone in this desire. Again, I’m just sayin’! So yeah...I was disappointed with the Amazon packaging, annoyed with the mixup of the pen groupings, and disappointed with the price vs. scratchy and dry quality of the Gelly Roll 74 Pen Set and put off by the missing colors (in order to make the customer spend even more money on something they don’t need to) in the Glaze Set. But I liked pretty much all of the pens in the Glaze Set and the Soufflé Set and the Tanmit Set (for the price Tanmit offered for its product though again the Standard and Dyeware—like the Classic Gelly Roll Pens—were horrid). You simply get way more bang out of your buck for the Tanmit. I wrote this review out because I just thought it was important for people laying out the kind of money I did for these kinds of gel pens actually to know what they are setting themselves up for so that they are not disappointed and annoyed and put off like me. 7-8-2021 Victoria Tribby ... show more

  • GREAT INVESTMENT. YEARS OF USE.
Color: Artist's Gift Set 74-pc Size: 74 Count (Pack of 1) Style: Gelly Roll
I bought these at least 10 years ago (picture/swatch is from 2025 though). The colors are still just as vibrant and the ink has only dried out in 6 of the “classic” colors. I use them a few times, put them away for months, then go back to them and they work just as well EVERY time! Yes it may take some rolling to get the ink going if you let them sit for a long time, but only 6 have completely dried out after all these years and I think that’s amazing compared to the lower quality gel pens I’ve bought in the past. I remember beating myself up for the price when I first bought them, but I promise it’s worth it. So many different colors, types, and even thickness. No repeats unless the pen comes in 2 different sizes, then you get both. It also comes with the “Clear” pen and that one is usually sold separately. It’s a great investment because these are the best quality gel pens you can get. (Attached picture is a January 2025 swatch of all except the 6 non-functioning pens. You can see which ones don’t work anymore.) ... show more

  • Solid glitter pens! Not the most quick drying but pretty nonetheless.
Color: Multi Colored Metallic Size: 10 Count (Pack of 1) Style: Gelly Roll
I use these pens for writing and taking notes. They are great quality and the colors are very pretty, but they do take a little longer to dry than I prefer which may cause issues if you’re a lefty or if you like to color with them as they will smear. However, that’s the nature of glitter gel pens, and it’s not enough for me to not love them and use them consistently! ... show more

  • Not what I was looking for
Color: Dark Metallic Gel Size: 5 Count (Pack of 1) Style: Gelly Roll
I was disappointed with these. The color is more silver/gray with a HINT of the desired color.

  • Nostalgia take me away!
Color: Artist's Gift Set 74-pc Size: 74 Count (Pack of 1) Style: Gelly Roll
My 90's peeps will understand when I say I REALLY missed the sweet smell of these fantastic gel pens. The last time I owned these was when I was around 6-7 years old. These pens were a writing statement piece when I was a kid. I loved these gel pens and the smoothness and color they brought to each paper I wrote on or colored. Now I know it was weird for me to say that they have a smell, but those who have previously owned these as a kid they will understand that there is a smell to some of these pens. The metallic gelly rolls have this familiar smell I am talking about; if you know what I am talking about, you will truly understand what I mean. Now I have completely forgotten about these pens since I last had them as a kid. I know; shame on me, right? I was recently reminded when I was looking for my 2023 planner. I have switched from a regular planner to a Hobonichi, and I was hunting for the best pen to use for the Hobonichi. I have read that these are only the best to use in the Hobonichi if you are willing to wait for the ink to dry since they do smug when wet. I am eager to take the risk for these spectacular pens ever gifted to planet earth. I usually don't take the time to write product reviews on here, but after using the Gelly Rolls again, I had to stop all that I was doing to tell anyone debating on getting these pens to just do it. I bought the 74 pack. I know it's a hefty price for these pens, but trust me, it's worth every penny to have these pens in your life. Also, try and name a good pen on the market that is worth $1.16 each. No other pen on earth writes as smoothly and beautifully as these do. I honestly can't think of a brand of pen that will bring such vibrant and perfect color to your papers or journals. They don't rip or jump on your paper. It's just a smooth buttery writing session with these sweet little pens. Buy them and don't regret your purchase because this will be the best purchase you have made in a long time. ... show more
