I've been keeping fish on and off for decades. Recently, I had an issue in my fully cycled 29 gallon tank that has been operating without issue for a full year. The water suddenly turned murky, then green. Research pointed me to a UV sterilizer, and I bought this one. The manufacturer says "not recommended for 24 hour use", so at first I ran it for 6 hours - not much of a change - bumped it up to 12, again, little (but some) improvement. I finally bit the bullet and set it for a continuous 24 hour run. In 5 days, the water was pristine, easily the clearest it is ever been. I believed the recommendation to avoid 24 hours is due to the bulb life - this little baby will burn out quickly at that rate, probably within 6 months. I plan to try a 12 hour cycle, and if the water stays clear, maybe bring it down to 6 hours. But one thing is for sure - this has become a permanent fixture in my aquarium setup, now that I've learned all it can do. And, I'll be buying one for my quarantine tank, since it's a great way to clear ich and other disease causing bacteria. At this price point, I have no issue replacing the unit every 6 months, and I love the fact that the bulb is shielded, meaning no fried inverts or fish. Happy as a clam! Small, easy, and effective (for small tanks)

So far, I like this little thing. I've actually bought two. I use them primarily in my small tanks, a 5G and three 2.5Gs. Within a day, it clears the water right up! I haven't tried it in any of the larger tanks. It's a small wattage and a small unit, so I don't know how effective it would be in a tank 20G or more. But I've tried a lot of UV sterilizers, and most of them leaked. These are not like that. They just hang on the inside, and water flows through them as the currents in the tank take it. Like I said, I have two, so I use one in a couple of small tanks, clear up that water and move them to another if needed. ... show more

This Surprisingly Does Prevent Algae Water Blooms

UPDATED: I overall like this device and its effectiveness toward controlling algae, however, be aware the bulb has s limited lifespan. I had read from other buyers that after a year they need to replaced, but it seems that I lucked out because my unit lasted 1 1/2 years before the bulb wore out. However, my aquarium water which previously was consistently cloudy due to algae in the water has remained crystal clear and this device also dramatically reduced my artificial plants, rock and other decor from becoming covered with dark algae. I had been using a liquid algae killer water additive, but recently introduced a pet blue crayfish and it would’ve been harmful to that creature. And for the record, the algae killer liquid chemicals did not seem to work for any extended length of time, so was not as effective as this underwater ultraviolet light device. The underwater cords are generous in length even for my 40 gallon tank. My only slight consideration is the device is somewhat large in size, so you need to camouflage it with plants or place it where it remains out of sight. There are other units where you can change the bulb, but I like this one because it uniquely has a cover that camouflages the light and protects both your fish and human eyes. Surprizingly Amazing

Using this item for 10 hours a day cleared the green water out in 3 days. I will keep it going for a while longer to see if it will help limit the algae growth. I don't think it bothers the fish, snails or shrimp. When it comes on they do go away and stay away from it but other than that they are not acting any different. Update: After 2 months, I still love this. I have three tanks and I use this in rotation on all of them. So far, I have not noticed any issues with any of the snails, shrimp or fish. I was worried about the baby shrimp going into it as a great place to hide but so far there are no dead baby shrimp (or blind ones) falling out when I move it. Awesome purchase. ... show more

Not shielded

This is supposed to be 360 degree shielded to protect fish and other critters, but it's absolutely not. You can clearly see the light on one side. I'm trying to figure out if there's a covering or something, or a way I can keep the light more covered so I don't nuke my fish while I'm trying to clean the tank. I have another light that is totally shielded and it works well. I have other small unshielded UV lights that fit into the water filters so the light doesn't get where the fish are. I'm not sure what I can do with this except use it in tanks or containers with no life. Or break it apart and move the little shield, because it's actually in there. It's just positioned incorrectly, so the light is very visible. Eh, I'll probably return it. I don't actually need another, I just thought it would be convenient to have. ... show more

Exceeded my expectations.

I have a 3 year well established 30 gallon fresh water aquarium with mostly Mollys. I have been trying to clear cloudy, milky water for about a month. I suspect was caused by an algae bloom perhaps due to the death of many snails. I tried adding additional filter media, water changes, and commercial water clarifiers without success. I ordered this self contained UV light to see if it would help. I chose this light because it’s designed to place directly into the tank due to its shielded bulb. My plan was to allow 5 days before expecting any results. After running it for 24 hours I knew this was the solution. It’s been 5 days now, water is crystal clear. Fits in a smaller tank

I needed a small UV light for a small tank. I wanted to prevent an algae bloom but wasn’t experiencing one in the tank I put this in. What I like about this is that it is short enough to fit in my smaller tank and that I could set a timer to work just a couple hours a day. I can see just a hint of light, so I know it’s on. Although the length of this fits in my shorter tank, it’s still pretty big. And although it’s a bit of an eye sore in my little tank, I feel it’s helping to prevent an algae bloom. I like it’s a stand-alone light so I can choose to remove and only use if I have an algae bloom or keep in the tank to supplement maintenance. There is a loud beep when the light comes on and turns off which is slightly annoying but at least I know it’s working. I wish there was an option to turn this down. I don’t know how well it works with an algae bloom, but I’ll update on how this works if I do. ... show more
