I've been keeping fish on and off for decades. Recently, I had an issue in my fully cycled 29 gallon tank that has been operating without issue for a full year. The water suddenly turned murky, then green. Research pointed me to a UV sterilizer, and I bought this one. The manufacturer says "not recommended for 24 hour use", so at first I ran it for 6 hours - not much of a change - bumped it up to 12, again, little (but some) improvement. I finally bit the bullet and set it for a continuous 24 hour run. In 5 days, the water was pristine, easily the clearest it is ever been. I believed the recommendation to avoid 24 hours is due to the bulb life - this little baby will burn out quickly at that rate, probably within 6 months. I plan to try a 12 hour cycle, and if the water stays clear, maybe bring it down to 6 hours. But one thing is for sure - this has become a permanent fixture in my aquarium setup, now that I've learned all it can do. And, I'll be buying one for my quarantine tank, since it's a great way to clear ich and other disease causing bacteria. At this price point, I have no issue replacing the unit every 6 months, and I love the fact that the bulb is shielded, meaning no fried inverts or fish. Happy as a clam! So far, I like this little thing. I've actually bought two. I use them primarily in my small tanks, a 5G and three 2.5Gs. Within a day, it clears the water right up! I haven't tried it in any of the larger tanks. It's a small wattage and a small unit, so I don't know how effective it would be in a tank 20G or more. But I've tried a lot of UV sterilizers, and most of them leaked. These are not like that. They just hang on the inside, and water flows through them as the currents in the tank take it. Like I said, I have two, so I use one in a couple of small tanks, clear up that water and move them to another if needed. ... show more

Ok day 1 here we go: unpacking love it looks great uniform clear instructions I also use chat GPT to get an idea for my tank size and how to put it in highly recommend. Im using it 4 hours a day on a 6 gallon tank so I expect this to take a week im dealing with free flow algae of 3 months. I work doubles give me a break. I will update often. this is by FAR the best UV light I have ever owned. FORGET the ones that are also a pump/filter... this one (as opposed to those) is maintenance-free. I place it close enough to the current created by my pump/filter so that water GENTLY circulates through it, and that's it! (IF you do not place it near a current, it won't clear tank... needs to access all of the water) ... show more

I was skeptical, but the reviews convinced me to give it a try. I should have trusted my gut. Placed it between the filter intakes so it would get some water flow through it. I was surprised it didn't have any sort of pump built in to move the water. After a week of running 24 hours a day, nothing has changed. I had been battling algae in my tank for about 2 weeks trying all sorts of different things to try to combat it. I eventually stumbled across this after having no luck finding a UV filter that would fit my tank and man oh man am I glad I found this. The two pictures are 48 hours apart running the UV for 18 hours a day. I will be looking into what happened in my tank to try to prevent it from happening again but it’s comforting to know that if I do have a bad bloom I can quickly and safely get it taken care of. 10/10 recommend! **update** After a few more days I dialed it back to 8 hours a day and my tank water is the most clear it’s ever been! ... show more

I needed a small UV light for a small tank. I wanted to prevent an algae bloom but wasn’t experiencing one in the tank I put this in. What I like about this is that it is short enough to fit in my smaller tank and that I could set a timer to work just a couple hours a day. I can see just a hint of light, so I know it’s on. Although the length of this fits in my shorter tank, it’s still pretty big. And although it’s a bit of an eye sore in my little tank, I feel it’s helping to prevent an algae bloom. I like it’s a stand-alone light so I can choose to remove and only use if I have an algae bloom or keep in the tank to supplement maintenance. There is a loud beep when the light comes on and turns off which is slightly annoying but at least I know it’s working. I wish there was an option to turn this down. I don’t know how well it works with an algae bloom, but I’ll update on how this works if I do. ... show more
