  • Great Product If Installed Correctly....Plus a Few Caveats
Most parents/grandparents are more familiar with the pressure-mounted version of the baby gate. No need for a drill. No holes in your wall. Just turn a wheel to expand the gate until it's snug within the opening. They are easy to set up and can easily be taken down and moved to a different location. The downsides are they can be forced loose, or loosen over time which can ultimately pose a hazard. Then there is the threshold bar across the bottom (or trip bar), a trip hazard. For these reasons alone they are not recommended for stairway use. As grandparents, we own several versions of pressure-fitted gates. And we've encountered all of the hazards mentioned, especially tripping on the trip bar. So my search for a baby gate minus the trip bar began in earnest. There are not many gates that are designed without some kind of bar across the bottom. Of course, because of the difference in design, all the ones I found without the bar require attaching each end to the wall with screws, necessitating the need to drill holes in your wall. Ideally, you want the screw to find a stud in the wall for the most secure setup. But not every situation is ideal. So you will also need to rely on anchor bolts. Toggle and butterfly anchors are the best for this situation. Ultimately, I settled on this gate and purchased three of them. They are metal and have a very solid feel to them. The gate is marketed as pre-assembled and ready to install. So when you first pull the gate out of the box the first thing you will notice is the large signage warning you not to remove the zip ties and attached filler boxes until after the gate has been completely installed. Realistically, however, I found there is definitely more work and planning involved to get these gates installed correctly. One caveat, based on other reviewers of this gate, is the anchor screws included in the packaging haven't proven to be very reliable. So I opted not to use them and sprang for toggle bolts instead. Sadly, I was only able to rely on studs for one gate and one side of the second gate and finished up installation with the toggle bolts. My situation required putting the gate in the desired place, marking where the holes for the bolts would go, removing the gate, drilling the holes and inserting the bolts, then putting the gate back in place and securing it. Not exactly 'ready to install.' Another issue is there is some 'movement' in the gate while installing. After installing the first gate, I found that the latch didn't line up precisely because of the give-and-take while trying to secure the gate to the walls. I had to drill new holes and raise one side slightly so the latch would line up correctly. I made sure to pay attention to the latches when installing the remaining gates. I encountered no further problems and all three gates are installed and feel very sturdy. A few other issues - one of the screws was missing from the latch mechanism (pictured) from the first gate. I found the screw at the bottom of the box but when I tried to screw it back into place, I discovered it was stripped. Probably why it fell out during shipment. In fact the other two screws on the same latch were also stripped and I ended up having to superglue the entire latch mechanism so it wouldn't fall apart. The screws on the other two gates were solid, so is there a quality control issue here? Other issues were loose screws elsewhere that were not completely screwed in. So I found myself checking every screw on each gate to make sure each was secure. Also, one of the four brackets on one gate was found broken off. Not a big deal since it doesn't really interfere with the installation process. Overall, I am satisfied with the gates and would recommend them to others as long as it's understood there will probably be a lot more effort involved than their marketing would suggest. ... show more

  • Overall? Great! But... may need mods!
Background: Family of 6. 2 parental units (the *Adultier* adults 🤔😇), 1 21yo (*Adult* 🤦♀️), 1 Terdler (aka toddler, whom we love with all our hearts! 😁🥴), 1 10 month old (on the verge of walking!! 😮), and 1 4-legged critter who kinda resembles Slinky Dog from Toy Story. Annnddddd it goes a little somethin' like this..... Our Sweet Terdler doesn't understand that the house is not her jungle gym. Climbs on EH-VER-REE-THIIIIING. Especially in the kitchen. No cookie/candy/cracker/weird kitchen utensil is safe from grubby little lunch hooks! Started with cabinet locks. Well guess what? She figured those out. In like 2.5 seconds. 🤦♀️ Next step? Basic baby gate. Standard wood sliding one. Ya know, the ones they've had around since the Age of Dinosaurs? Yeah, that one. Well not only is my Terdler smart and beautiful, she's also a friggin Hulk. Standard wood baby gate? Challenge accepted. Hulk Smash. Parental Units: 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Terdler: Bring it!! Parental Units: Amazon!! Terdler: Ooooh! More toys! PU: Read TONS of reviews. Settle on this gate. Terdler: But I want T-Rex!! 😭 2 days later it arrives. Another 5 days goes by and the Hubby installs. We adjust, test, adjust, test. Keep Terdler away so she doesn't figure out latch by watching.... Pros: 1. LOVE the wide opening. Perfect when carrying baby, and Terdler and Slinky Dog want to go through it with you 3 wide like Nascar. 2. I have acrylic nails. Not crazy claws, but good length, and my hubby has arthritis. There are no issues pushing buttons on this latch. 3. Sturdy. Baby and Terdler have hung on it, shook it like they're trapped in jail (which is kinda true), 70lb dog we fostered for a month ran into it several times, and all of us of legal age have walked into it. Because clumsiness is hereditary. 🤣 4. It was easy to install. Cons: 1. If you have a Terdler like we do, they WILL figure out how to get this gate open. Period. End of story. Mic drop. Whatever. Its gonna happen. That's all she wrote. 2. This was achieved because of a slight flaw in the design. THE LOCKING CLIPS. They are about 90% secure. That 10%? It makes the section of gate that has the latch, ever so slightly slide back. Away from the lock. Therefore only a tiny portion of the pins are catching, and when the Terdler puts her foot on the bottom, (like she's going to step up), it makes that side drop just enough to pop it right open!!! She is utterly and ridiculously innovative. She's going to do amazing things in this life I promise you. ❤ Solution? We drilled 2 holes. 1 at the top. 1 at the bottom. Secured with screws. It has been 2 weeks since we modified it, and the kitchen is starting to feel safe again!! All utensils are coming back out of hiding, and I left some crackers on the counter that were still there when I came back from the back of the house! 🤣🤣🤣 Overall? Worth the money!! Another Pro? Watching your Millennial *Adult* try to figure it out after the Terdler broke the code!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 And if you read this whole review, THANK YOU! 😊 And I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day! 😁❤ ... show more

  • Very safe and stable after installation
I purchased and installed Regalo Easy Step 38.5-Inch Wide Walk Thru Baby Gate but it was very unstable and had to return it. End up buying this product, need a screwdriver to install but very stable.

  • Best baby gate EVER
So easy to install though I did have to do some rigging because I am using it in a doorway with a frame. I added a piece of wood to the closing side so that the brackets were flat. The hinge side gives you two hinge options so that part was easy. I love not having to step over a bar, turn those dumb things to tighten on the side. Perfect gate, worth the money for sure. • Well-made, but a Couple of Issues
Quality product; good materials. Good idea to have the small arm that prevents opening in one or both directions. Three issues: 1) Relatively easy to install, but two of the screws stripped during installation into dry wall. 2) Gate latch mechanism will not align properly to allow the gate to close and open as designed. If the gate width is set to engage the latch, the gate would not open. If the gate is narrowed to let the gate open/close correctly, the gate does not sufficiently engage with the latch. 3) The small arm that prevents the gate from opening in one direction can be easily rotated. My granddaughter initially easily turned the small arm to the open position as she tried to open the gate. ... show more
