On the practical side it is accurate. In boiling water it reads 212 deg F (exactly what it is supposed to at sea level), fluctuating only 0.2 deg above and below. It can display in degrees F or C. A backlight comes on when you turn it on, so you can read it grilling meat outside for diner or heating up milk for baby in the middle of the night. It shuts off by itself if you forget. Numbers are large and easy to read. It is fast, reading with a second or so. Temperature range covers both meat and candy temperatures. It is small, no bulky round dial on the end, so it takes up little space in the drawer. It has a loop on the end to hang it up. Stainless steel. On the aesthetic side it is beautiful to look at and a pleasure to use. It is expensive, but it cost less than the three cheepos I threw out that didn't work. They were the dial type and when the round part turned on the post it would move the temperature dial all over the place. Easier to justify the cost in terms of perfectly cooked meat, perfectly heated milk for baby, and creamy fudge. A practical luxury. I use it everyday and love it. Update: May 2017. After approximately 10 years, my thermometer quit. Changed the batteries, nope. Coming from a family of engineers, I cleaned the contact (center pin down inside the battery compartment) with a little rubbing alcohol for a minute until it was shiny, not dull. Wiped the screw-in cap as well, as it is part of the connection. Works great. Shiny stainless still looks new. Still accurate. Used to use it to check the temperature of milk for baby, now he is almost 9. Such a pleasure to have something that is beautiful and just works and works. Used 2 Energizer silver oxide 357/303. Purchased in 2008, 2009 and as a gift in 2012. ... show more

    • Cheap - not what you’d expect from Rosle
Replaced older Rosle SS chef thermometer that failed after 6+ years of daily professional use. Was the best of its class. Just received a new one which is an embarrassment to not only Rosle but to me as well for spending this much on a sloppy plastic remake of an originally brilliant product. This is the first negative product review I’ve ever written in my life. As a life long Rosle customer, I will be finding another brand as I feel totally ripped off by what passes off as a professional grade thermometer at this price. ... show more

    • Very accurate thermometer, use it for all uses
This is a very nice, durable thermometer. I've tested it in boiling water and against a high end tire pyrometer (used for testing tires) and other thermometers. Very consistent and precise. I use this to set the temperature that I press coffee at and my coffee always comes out superb. I've used this to measure temperatures in the room (always matches my digital WiFi thermostats), attic temps, and especially cooking meats in the oven and Komado style grill. Our steaks turn out superb (rare just the way we like them) over and over again and guests rave about our BBQ dinners. Bought this thermometer because of my personal experience with other Rosle products even though there are less expensive thermometers on the market! I figured I probably would not be disappointed and so far I'm not! Excellent product, very easy to use, simple to clean and takes up very little space in a drawer - I store mine in a cute little wooden box with my other Rosle tools on my counter. I have used it to check mainly meats on the barbecue and in the oven and it has been accurate every time and meats have been perfect. I got this for its sleek look and quick digital read. I was also excited bout the shape of it in hopes that it would fit into the arm pocket of my chef jacket. Unfortunately, it is just too long. It's not convenient to carry around a kitchen. The only thing protecting the tip is a small rubber piece that is not easy to hold onto. WANTED SOMETHING A LITTLE CHEAPER THAN ONE OF THOSE HIGH DOLLAR PROBES AND THIS ONE HAS FIT THE BILL. NOT QUITE AS FAST MAYBE BUT FAST ENOUGH FOR MY NEEDS. My cheaper thermometer would take 30-40 seconds before getting a reading. This ROSLE thermometer generates temperature reading within a few seconds. Great product!

I've owned about 6 or 7 of this thermometer. We've ruined a couple by mistakenly forgetting and leaving then in the oven, or, when we first started using them, leaving them too close to the side of an extremely hot pan. That said, if treated with reasonable care, this is an accurate, attractive, handy little instant read thermometer.
