Purchased 2 of these for my grandsons 6 and 9 years. Prior to bringing the detectors out - my husband hide pirate treasure of metal coins in our sandy front yard - perfect for buried pirate treasure... The boys have been THRILLED with these. They come with a VERY hand storage/carrying bag - a hand shovel and a very handy claw for digging. I did separately purchased a sieve like scoop - which is very handy to sort through dug up sand and a hand held wand for checking spoils. Both have proven to be worthy extra purchases. In my opinion the boys have really gotten our money's worth out these already - hopefully they will last a while. I never hesitate to update my reviews should new info seem useful. These are great fun and have held their attention for hours at a time. Of course the buried "treasure" didn't hurt. Lots of safe excitement at home in the time of the virus when staying at home and having fun is sometimes hard. Mostly they are yellow and black plastic. And are pretty darn accurate. The media could not be loaded. I am just mind blown!! Not only at how there are somehow so many good reviews for this junk piece of plastic, but also how people are not flipping out when they receive this thing they just spent $65 on?!?! I order a lot of things from Amazon and understand, sometimes you just have to take things for what they are and do your best with them, but the “quality” of this is something you could buy at dollar general for under $10. I don’t know why I’m shocked that it didn’t work. The “LCD” screen never came on, couldn’t detect a quarter on the garage floor, etc. In the end.. I have a really disappointed 7 year old little girl that was super excited to go on an adventure, and a mom who assumed for $65 we could at least get 5 or 6 adventures out of it this summer. ... show more

In these coronavirus times, I needed something my 5-year old daughter and I could do together. I figured treasure hunting would be a great thing we could do together. This is light, easy to use for a 5 year old, non complicated, works well, good battery life. The thing I didnt expect, is my daughter doesnt look at screws, nails, soda caps, and misc metal garbage as treasure. So the expectations that arrived with this toy have not been met, as we did not find an alien spacecraft, buried gold coins, or other exciting metal objects yet. We got this metal detector as a starter tool for my friend's child birthday. He is a curious little boy who just turned 9. He loves rocks and nature and exploring and we found a fun book about metal detecting to go with this. I love that this came with a carrying case, rake and little shovel (although for rougher terrain, you may want a stronger spade). The detector is very lightweight so mom or dad won't have to struggle to carry it for them. The adult versions can be very heavy. We plan to take the boys to a couple Civil War battlefield to look for bullet casings. Meanwhile the kids tested this on floor studs then went outside to discover misc change, nails, and other parts. This put such a big smile on his face and I love toys that encourage learning and outdoor exploration. The height is ajustable by twisting the knob around the pole and pulling it the desired length. Parent tip: be sure to have a 9v battery to include or have ready since this does not come with one included. ... show more

So, these lil things are awesome. Bought it for my kids and they've been finding "treasures " all over the place. They are pretty powerful for a toy I guess. Took them to the beach, to an area where people like to sit down on the sand and chill and you know that's where all the coins come out of the pockets and dive in the sand. Between my 3 kids in 1 hour they found about $25 in coins. When they're too close together it gives false alarms, catches the other detectors sensors I guess but thats like inches apart. Bought this for my 5 year old grandson. It constantly gives false alarms and seems more like a toy than an actual detector. No matter where I used it or what I scanned...it never sent a good signal. Very disappointed! I do not recommend this product. (UPDATE): I changed my review from 2 stars (because the product was poor) to 1 star because the company has sent me no less than 10 emails asking me to delete my review. After telling them to stop, they waited a few months and sent yet another. I'll be reporting them in hopes their harassments will end. ... show more

The RICOMAX metal detector is great! It is sensitive enough to find even the smallest pieces of metal. I have already found multiple coins to add to my coin collection. It can be dissembled to fit into the storage bag (included) that can be hand carried or placed in a suitcase for travel. I haven't used it at the beach but like the fact that it can be used in saltwater! I highly recommend the metal detector. ... show more

    • UPDATE to review: Stopped working after first use

UPDATE: I contacted the seller and explained what had happened. They said the detector should not have failed as it was waterproof and said they would send me a replacement. I had to contact them a second time after not receiving the replacement within a month. I received the replacement today and the seller was apologetic about the delay and they were willing to help with any issues. The detector works well and the grandkids were thrilled with it. I have changed my rating to 4 stars. Previous review. This item was defective and stopped working after the first use at the beach. I contacted the amazon associate twice and they connected me with the manufacturer on the line. The manufacturer promised to send a replacement both times, but nothing was ever sent. Now, Amazon is saying they are not responsible, even though this item was "fulfilled by amazon". I will try again with another associated and have also contacted the manufacturer again. This item failed with the first use and now no one is standing behind this product. ... show more
