  • Solid lock, wifi and plan not required for basic features
My goal was to find a lock that interfaces directly with the AirBnB system so that codes are sent directly to travelers. This lock does exactly that. It is listed on the AirBnB site as one of the preferred locks. Before purchasing, I read the reviews and like many others was a little concerned about nuances. The purpose of my review is to dispel the nuances. Is WiFi required? No. If you only want the lock to perform like a KwikSet simple electronic lock for example, you don't need to use wifi. The Lock State RemoteLock 5i works just like a KwikSet electronic lock without wifi. You can enter a master code that can be used to set temp codes and to change a few settings. All of this is described in the Lock State user manual on page 44. You can set things like local codes, master code, delete / add stuff, mute beeps, auto-lock...all the simple stuff you'd expect. When is WiFi needed? Here are the use cases I identified where wifi is needed. There may be more. These were the ones I cared about. - You want to access the lock from your phone using the RemoteLock app to perform an action - You want to connect the lock to AirBnB Do I need a monthly plan with RemoteLock? - If you only care about using the lock for the basic operations where wifi isn't needed, no. You don't need to create a RemoteLock account nor do anything with their website. Just install the lock and program it like you would a normal KwikSet electronic lock that doesn't connect to wifi. I verified this for a week while I used the lock as just a plain basic electronic lock. My local user code allowed me to lock and unlock the lock when I used the keypad on the lock. - If you care about the use cases where wifi is needed, yes you need a monthly plan with RemoteLock. The plans are listed here. https://www.remotelock.com/edgestate-pricing --- The BASIC plan, at the time of this review, lets you use the Remote Lock app to perform basic functions. I **believe** one of these functions is to be able to lock and unlock the door from your phone using the RemoteLock app. You'll need to verify this. It costs $3 per lock per month (at the time of this review). --- The PREMIUM plan is the one that lets you interface with the AirBnB system. It costs $6 per lock per month (at the time of this review). How do I connect the lock to AirBnB Their user guides and videos on YT are solid. Here is the basic process. - Install the lock in the door. Set the master code and local codes so that the lock at least works from the keypad. - Create a RemotLock account. Select a plan first! I spoke with their support team. It's important to have a plan selected first. - Get the app, log in to the app with your account creds - Follow the instructions to connect the lock to wifi - Finally, log in to your RemoteLock account in a browser on your computer and go to the Integrations section to select the option to connect to AirBnB. Follow the work flow. Is this lock worth it? It costs more than other locks that offer AirBnB access but this one works flawlessly with AirBnB and other hospitality systems. So if this sort of feature matters to you, this is the good lock. If you are only looking for a simple electronic non-wifi lock to use with local codes etc, no. Get the KwikSet electronic non-wifi model for under $100. Aside - the RemoteLock feels and looks just like a KwikSet lock which makes me feel like it's a quality device. I use KwikSet electronic locks for basic local code access. I use RemoteLock lock when I need AirBnB / hospitality-system workflows. Overall, I'm happy with my LockState RemoteLock 5i. ... show more

  • Tough set up, but gives remote access using only WiFi, not additional home manager
Wow, this was a challenging install and set up. I replaced a couple Kwikset keyless deadbolts with 2 of these. I think there are a few flaws that are noteworthy. First, the sound that occurs when pressing keypad is very soft. I emailed customer svc, and they told me there is no way to change it. I think the company would do well to fix that in next generation; currently, it is a significant hindrance, as the keypad seems irregular in its response to my deliberate pressing of the number buttons. I have had to enter the number code 2 or 3 times to get it to work. The actual install went smoothly. Reasonable instructions. The 2nd one took me 15 min, while the first took 45. The best part of these locks is their ability to connect directly to WiFi without an additional home management device (Nest, Apple Home). The phone app seems straightforward and helpful, notwithstanding the tech issues below. I found the shape of the deadbolt itself to be suboptimal. While it is a straight deadbolt, the strike plate on the door must be perfectly aligned for it to work. One of the doors (with a striker plate to accept the deadbolt that is quite standard, and slightly larger opening than striker plate supplied) has some play in how tightly it closes. If it closes 75% (the retracting door latch just catches the lower strike plate), it would not close with battery operation. Instead, even with manual turn, it encountered significant friction. And when I pushed door firmly closed, and (separate, round doorknob) handle latch engaged fully, it would catch or have excessive friction on the outside edge. Since I wanted to take advantage of the remote access capability of this lock, I took the deadbolt for each LockState lock to a machine shop, and had the brass deadbolt ground down into a more tapered (think of the tip of a bullet) nose. I had to do this 3 different times to get optimal function. The Kwikset 914 that I replaced has a deadbolt that tapers down very nicely, and allows friction-free movement of the deadbolt. I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING THAT LOCKSTATE SHOULD FIX AT THE MANUFACTURING STAGE, SOON, AND PRIOR TO 'NEXT GENERATION'. The web interface is reasonable, but there could be much improvement in the FAQ portions. Tough to make sure the wifi capability is engaged. Also, with 2 locks, it's a bit tricky figuring out how to make sure a newly-added code gets added to both doors (hint- add a new user, pick the device/door, and then go back and edit, adding a second 'door'). And do note that there is a $0.99 per month charge for each lock if you use the wifi capability. It then costs $3 per month to be able to get text messages, which can be sent to you anytime the door is accessed. You can get a report on the web interface however, without charge, it appears. The wifi, App, and remote functions seem good after a very long day getting these 2 locks installed, deadbolt ground down, and web interface installed, and user/ guest accounts being added. I'm fairly handy, and I'm a bit embarrassed to state that I spent about 6-7 hours on the install of these 2 locks (including 3 trips to a friendly machine shop to grind the deadbolts into a taper so the bolts would move smoothly. Finally, I installed Everyready Lithium AA batteries to minimize the interval that they need to be replaces. ADDENDUM 7-3-19: I took these things out after a couple weeks. They were so temperamental, and the locks did not close properly. They just weren’t worth the hassle. I put the Kwikset locks back in. I don’t even use them anymore. I did not spend any time going to see if the manufacturer had updated these locks anyway, so you might want to review their current product. ... show more

  • Great lock, great support!
We love these locks. We have needed technical support after installation, but RemoteLock tech support is top-notch. I recommend these to everyone I know who is looking for a programmable lock.

  • Works great Once you get it connected
I had U-Bolt but it kept loosing connection. I have an Airbnb 2 hours away so a disconnected lock is a problem. I switched to this for a couple of reasons. I can control the hour at check in and out. It is a direct Wi-Fi so no bridge. The App is clunky to get hooked up to WI-FI. I ended up using a combination of the app and a PC through the connect.remotelock site. Also had to go into my Wi-Fi setup on the phone and that seemed to work. The web user interface is much better than the APP. I have the app on i-Phone and a Samsung tablet. The one on the tablet is cleaner. Both are fine for adding users and seeing events etc. The one negative is the app doesn't seem to have notifications. I have found how I can get an e-mail, but not an alert on my phone. I get too many junk e-mails to have email alerts. The software has a text option, but no good instruction on how to add a phone number. I guess another negative is $3 per month for the service, but I actually don't mind that for a number to call and a connection that works. ... show more
