  • 9 Months Later and Going Strong

Installed 40A Renogy B-to-B charger in my A-Frame pop-up camper last year after upgrading the camper's "house" battery to a Lossigy 200ah LiFePO4 (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) battery. Reason? The standard battery charge lead from the tow vehicle never supplies more than 8 amps which meant that we had to drive for at least 12 hours to restore even 50% of the new battery's capacity! (Ok, you may want to skip this next paragraph unless your tow vehicle is a hybrid.) So, our favorite mule, a 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, posed some questions because we would be tapping the 288V NiMH hybrid battery instead of an alternator to supply the charge current (by design, there is no 12 volt alternator on this vehicle, and the transaxle-mounted motor generator is virtually inaccessible). However, the car does have it's own 12V AGM accessory battery which receives its charge from the hybrid battery via step-down converter. So before getting too far into this project I sampled the current flow in and out of the 12V AGM battery with the ignition on and found it often hit 60 amps or more when the AGM battery needed charging. This seemed more than enough to supply the 40A DC-to-DC charger as long as the AGM battery is in good shape! Whether or not your tow vehicle is a hybrid, the Renogy unit incorporates some useful features for protecting the vehicle's 12Volt system, and in this regard I can't say enough good things about the LC (Limit Current) feature. What does this do? It allows the user to set the current draw at either 20A or 40A. Why is this important? Because when towing, especially at night with all the running lights on, there is potential for sudden high current demand from the vehicle's 12 volt electronics (in my case the hybrid battery and OEM step-down converter). So, to minimize any risks of over-taxing the vehicle I leave the 20A LC feature enabled while towing. In five hours, 20A of current will provide 100ah or 50% of the 200ah battery's full charge - more than enough! But what if we're camped somewhere for a few days and need additional charging? Simply connect the camper's umbilicals to the tow vehicle, turn off AC and all the 12V accessories, fire it up, disable the LC, and . . . get 40 amps! (See attached photos: one shows the DC-to-DC charger unit mounted on the forward bulkhead under our dinette table, and the other is of locking push-button illuminated switches I mounted on an interior wall panel. The buttons are wired for switching the DC-to-DC charger on/off, and for enabling/disabling Current Limiting or LC.) Btw: I priced DC-to-DC chargers from other manufacturers and found that units with the LC feature are generally priced in the $400 - $700 range. Couple of things to be mindful of, no matter what your configuration: 1. Several reviewers have mentioned the importance of properly wiring the D+ lead so that the DC-to-DC charger will shut off when tow vehicle's engine is turned off so as to prevent draining the 12V starter/accessory battery. I chose the cigarette lighter (aka: 12V Port) circuit for this since it is only active when the vehicle is actually on. (Some have chosen the running lights circuit, but it's just too easy to forget to turn off lights, especially when parked somewhere during daytime.) 2. To avoid significant current loss and less than-optimal-charging, it's very important to use heavy gauge, minimum resistance wire (I chose 6AWG Marine Duplex) for the circuits that will be carrying charge current between the respective batteries and the DC-to-DC Charger. Expensive, but worth it. On the other hand, the signaling circuits (D+ and LC) can be much lighter 14AWG - 16AWG, depending on length of wire runs. ... show more

  • Trustworthy
Size: 40A
House LifePO4 battery charged up like a champ from the car, never had a worry after 2 months of car-camping. Quality workmanship and design. We gave a lower score for value for the money. We did find this for about half the price including shipping directly from the apparent OEM in china, identical but unbranded through an OEM channel, and when an opportunity arose, purchased the even still cheaper 20Amp version thus for a different vehicle in single unit sample quantity. Yes, importing did take more than 45 days to deliver. Trust that one as I do this one, identical setup, merely a different colour. The point being that the price on Amazon has a bit of a margin on it, they purchase with a higher MOQ, yet when one can get an engineering sample cheaper from manufacturer. Price does buy convenience stateside. ... show more

  • It does the job
Size: 60A
It is very simple to install however they should have made it voltage sensing like any other automatic smart battery relay. It's silly to have to run an extra wire to tell the unit it is powered on. Just detecting the alternator voltage increase is easy enough to do.

  • Check the fan direction
Size: 40A
I followed the instructions and mounted and wired it up to find out it over heated and shut off. At least the high temperature cutoff works. Come to find out the fans on the input side blow outwards, so its backwards for airflow. Otherwise seems to charge at around 39 amps with 25 feet of 2 awg wire going to the lithium batteries. Oh also, i think there is some voltage leakage from starter to house batteries, i am buying a circuit breaker so i can disconnect it when not driving. ... show more

I bought this for my campervan and it works great. It was fairly easy to set up. It is fairly quiet. The only thing is, I wish it had a switch.

  • Perfect to charge 2nd house battery for 12V car fridge
Size: 20A
This is exactly what I wanted and worked exactly the way I wanted it to. I got a 12 V DC car fridge for our 4,000 mile, 2 week road trip. I installed a 2nd “house” battery in my vehicle and used this to charge the 2nd house battery while we were driving. The house battery ran the fridge during the night while we were stopped, and got charged during the day while we were driving. I never drained my primary battery for starting my vehicle. This product perfectly charged my battery at the optimal voltage and current limit to prevent overheating the battery and prevent overloading the alternator on my vehicle. Since both batteries and the charger were in the engine compartment, I installed a switch so I could turn off the charger in slow traffic when there wasn’t good airflow, then turned it back on at highway speeds. This product was exactly what I wanted. Hopefully it lasts a long time, I really like it. Instructions were good. I basically installed it just like the instructions and diagram showed. ... show more
