Poorly sealed/Only last 1 seasonof use.
I have been using this for the last 3 years, required a new one every season. Removed and taken inside during the winter but the following season it would start to work then stop or would die just as the new season starts. Tried rechargable batteries, new batteries at start of season and always would have issue and failed the next season after purchase. Device is poorly sealed and would take on water or screen dies. It was designed to stay outside but not sealed to survive water, it is poorly manufactured. I have paired with orbit timer and my orbit at least last me 3 years before it malfunctioned in same location and weather. Warranty is only a year and is a shame as I like this timer, other brands offer better warranty. I love the dual start/run feature but sadly I cannot keep buying this timer for that feature, especially every season. I will seek other reliable timer.

Obvious poor design if pulling the old batteries out kills it
Went to change the batteries for the first time and the product has died. Display is blank. Tried 3 different sets of new batteries. Confirmed the batteries work in other things. Looked up the manual has no trouble shooting section. Would return it if I could but it has been too long. Obvious poor design if pulling the old batteries out kills it. Was happy with it up until that moment. Way too expensive to only last 2 months.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me 4 times and I should have tried a competitor a long, long time ago.
I've owned four. All four broke. One lasted a year and one lasted just one single day. Eventually the system seizes either won't let water pass or lets water pass continuously. Whatever the cause, Rain Bird needs better quality control.

Unreliable and getting worse.
Timer system worked as advertised for about a week or two, then it began to fail. I had it set to turn on for 45 minutes twice a day, and it would initially turn on and off as programmed for both times each day. Later, it began to turn on and off properly the first time, and on, but not off the 2nd time. I could manually turn it on (even though it already was on) and off, and the valve would properly shut. Now, it is beginning to fail to turn off after the first run, so it's just on all day after the first time is set. None of the programming was changed, and there are fresh batteries in the device. It simply doesn't shut the valve off reliably when it should. There shouldn't be any mineral buildup as it's connected to house water (from the city/county) and has only been operating for a short time. I have this connected to a hose straight off the house spigot into a misting system for my greenhouse. Very disappointed. UPDATE -- June 19, 2017 -- Not only does the unit refuse to turn off as programmed, but even when the dial is turned to OFF, it will continue to turn on at pre-programmed times. So, even when OFF, will turn on at either/both times set and refuse to turn off automatically after the allotted time. Garbage product. Almost certainly a software defect as the valve will turn on as programmed and can manually be shut off with some trickery (telling it to run manually even though it's still on, then turning dial to off will shut it off).

Real reviews for real working people!!
I ordered the rain bird automatic waterer cause it was used and it was priced right, I have to say it’s really nice quality and it has better programming than orbit or other models like from TSC or Sutherland or McCoys, and from Alamo best.. I have used all these brands from these stores and I have to say Rain bird has outdone them all. I can set 12hr, 1 day, 2day and so forth on orbit and other brands.. but on the Rain bird you can set times! Which is really nice cause I can set the timer for 6:30 am and then 8:30pm which is really nice to keep my watering during the night to keep evaporation down and so it’s less wasteful.. PROS: price Quality Programming Tuning Rain button CONS: when I find one I’ll update the Review

Works well, fixed one that died, but why should I have to?
Update on May 11, 2019 We're still using the original units we purchased. Bring them inside for the freezing season/rainy season. I've had to open them up a few times to dry them out and apply some tape/sealing stuff to keep the moisture out of the electronics. I've also had to troubleshoot leaks which just turn out to be the washers needing to be replaced and ensure they are stuffed into their homes AND use tape to get a good drip-free seal. I still like the dial and the logic for how you set up the watering. It's working for our needs since we're not committed to a specific landscape design on our property yet (we need a new kitchen, first! lol!) Original Review May 26, 2017 We picked up a few of these to assist with watering while we were out of town and ended up using them to help water all summer long. The way you set them up is great. The connections are fantastic if you use washers or some plumbers tape. However, after 1 season, we had one of the units give up the ghost. Changing batteries did nothing. Since we were nearly 1 year on with them I unscrewed the back and took a look inside: there was condensation on some inside housing and components. I dried up what I could (there's an exposed copper wire that looks like the rubber tubing around it had shrunk due to weather) and the unit works again! I don't know if I'll have to do this with the others at some point, but it makes me think that most are likely serviceable and can be weather-proofed even more for long-term use. I shouldn't have to do this, though, hence the "4 star" becomes "3 star".

Best I Have Found So Far, But Still Some Minor Issues.
I have never had good luck with mechanical or battery powered water timers. Either the pressure drop is to high and my downstream water pressure is inadequate to operate the sprinkler, they leak, or simply don't function correctly on the timer. These timers appear to be the best I have found so far. I don't have an issue with the pressure drop and the four I have worked well over the past year. They do all have a small amount of leak by (one worse than the others), but since they are all on soaker hoses right now, I have found the leaking acceptable. All-in-all this is the best option I have found short of an expensive irrigation with timer system.
