  • Great garage fan although pricey and needs smart controls.
The garage always runs warm in summer and I don't like to leave the door open all night since it allows bugs and rodents to come in. I was torn in consideration due to the cost of essentially a fan in a thin metal box even with the included RF remote control pad. Also, it lacks smart control in a world where even a toaster has them! Nevertheless, I bought it and installed it fairly easily in my finished garage. I tested it and found the shutters not closing well but after pulling on the shutter spring a few times and trying different adjustment holes it worked well to open and shut when off. It's not loud but not quiet either and is about the same noise as a box fan. The wattage drawn came in at 48 watts and is about what it is rated at so it's fairly cheap to run over time. The metal enclosure is kinda thin but works. Unlike others, I did not notice any manufacturing issues or lack of QA so maybe they ensure the products are goid before shipment, which was fast via FedEx. I noticed that since it lacks insulation of any kind, the louver doors are about 9 degrees warmer (by infrared temperature gun) than the surrounding ceiling when off. I may have to cover it in winter to prevent heat loss. The included RF pad works but is kinda finicky and as others have said, and lacks a simple off switch. Thankfully the attic power box that comes with it has a cord and an easy to open double width box to use for modification to use smart controls. I wanted a solution that not only turns the fan on and off via a schedule (which is easy) but to read my temperature sensors outside and in my garage to turn on and off as needed according to my preferences. I already had the $30 set of three Diivoo WiFi temperature sensors which work with Smart Life so I just needed a Smart Life compatible power controller. I found the $15 TOPGREENER Wi-Fi Relay Module. I tested it on my workbench for a day using a custom smart scene I made for schedule time and temperature readings outside and inside my garage and it worked perfectly. I opened the fan power box, detached the RF switch, and inserted this wifi relay in place with load going to the fan, hot to hot input, neutral together and that's it. I pre paired the Topgreener relay so after plugging in, I had my wifi control up and running. I may add a backup physical master cutoff switch in case the module ever fails. So far in a week it comes on in the evenings when it cools enough outside and stops when my comfort point is set or when sun up comes. I give it a 4.5 overall but if they had smart controls it would be 5. It works and gets the job done with modification. UPDATE: 11-9-2023. Weather has changed to cold but all Summer this fan was running like a champ without issues. My smart controls modification worked flawlessly and is still enabled and ready for warm spring weater. I now may install a whole house fan next. • Great product, poor inspection/quality control.
Received my GA ES-1500 Garage Vent Fan with intact packaging so imagine my surprise and disappointment when on checking the fan blades, I find that one's bent out of shape (pic attached). I tried manually rotating the fan and found that it got stuck on the housing. A quick inspection of the outside wall shows the likely reason for the bent fan blade (pic attached). My impression is that the housing had received some sort of impact or pressure onto it from the outside, likely while being assembled (paint was not chipped on the outside just on the inside, likely when I tried to rotate the fan.) I considered returning for replacement but did not want to wait another 1+ weeks so I thought if I could beat the housing back into shape and the fan rotated, I should be good. So I removed the fan, padded areas that I didn't want scratched up and spent about 20 - 30mins slowly beating the dent in the housing back to shape. Having a circular hollow steel drill from a door lock installation kit handy was the main reason my plan worked. Threw a rag over the drill teeth. I straightened out the bend in the fan blade to similar to other 2 blades, reinstalled fan blade and had good clearance from the sidewalls. Plugged up the fan and blades worked without touching sidewall and nothing was wobbly. Installation thereafter was pretty straight-forward except for (i) step 7 where one has to screw the fan into ceiling joists (I didn't have any joist close enough to not be in the way of my placement (probably have to go back up and add boards to opposite sides); and (ii) step 8 when installing grille because some screws from step 7 were in the way of the grille sitting properly, the screws were removed. RF controller was already installed and pairing fan hub with the wall switch was pretty straight forward. Fan works great, moves air well in my 12 foot ceiling 3 car garage with garage doors open. With garage doors closed, one can feel it sucking air around the garage doors and even feel cool air being pulled from inside the house when that particular door is open. I currently only run fan with garage doors open. I'm awaiting my garage door louvers, which once I put in will complete my garage ventilation. Fan is not quiet but hums almost like my hvac fan which I hear only when outside the house, not inside. In a garage, the hum is not an issue. I think my garage door opening and closing is louder than the hum. Mine is not attached to the joists yet so maybe it'll get louder at that point. Since I want to be able to remotely control fan even when not home, I purchased a Wi-Fi plug and bypassed the RF controller. The fan works for my purpose, I could have done without all the extra work though. ... show more

  • Sheet metal quality control issues
Installed one day ago. Cannot comment on life-span. First: QuietCool's quality control could be better. Bent drywall flanges. Bent corner of grill. Fan blade could be better balanced. Grill stuck in the housing when unpacked due to sheet metal drywall flange insufficiently seated. A protruding section of sheet metal hung up the grill (pre-inserted for shipping) and almost couldn't get it out at all. The unit was well packed and box undamaged so this is NOT shipping damage! Second: Truly insane method of attaching the melt slug to hold open the fire dampers. (Tip: Watch the QC install video to do so. You have about 2 seconds to see how.) Third: I had to tighten some fan mounting screws here and there to make it a little bit less rattle-ly. That said, it was easy to install and pair the remote control (which works ok but is quirky). Noise level is not horrible but not exactly "quiet." Some sheet metal rattle/buzz etc. But it is in a garage where that matters less. Would not work for me as a whole house fan mounted inside the house. It does move a lot of air and I hope the power friendly ECM motor makes it worth the premium price. All in all I suppose the bottom line is that it works for purpose well enough for an "OK" rating and is far more energy efficient than most. ... show more

  • Should have installed this years ago
After thinking about it for years, I finally bought this to ventilate my AZ garage to purge chemical vapors and bring in cool air at night. Works great so far. Not silent but not loud. Installation is straightforward if you're comfortable cutting drywall and putting screws in your ceiling. Very happy with it. ... show more
