The 10x13 umbrella is huge. It shades my entire swim spa. You really do need to do some planning to account for the umbrella's "wing span" when opening and closing it. Once open, it rotates 360 very easily and the tilt adjusts easily as well. I am comfortable with it open in winds up to 10 mph. After 10 mph I would want all the tilt taken out and need to start thinking about what direction the wind if from, etc. The included cover is nice and goes on/off quite easily and quickly. All told this umbrella is serving us well and should last quite a few years. We will store it inside over the winters. I did not use the any of the optional purple leaf bases, I instead added 4x4 blocking between the joists under my deck and through bolted the included base portion with carriage bolts. I did quite alot of research before purchasing a new umbrella for my patio. The Purple Leaf umbrella appears on nearly every list of top rated umbrellas and it is easy to see why. I love it! As Purple Leaf recommends, I strongly recommend that two people assemble the umbrella as the pole is appr 8'2" tall and it can be a bit unwieldy to insert into the base. Although the base is quite large, it is a minor inconvenience and mitigated by the stability that it provides. I purchased the base with wheels and I love it as I can easily move the umbrella out of the way when necessary such as during the evening in order to enjoy the beautiful star-studded desert evenings. In addition, Emily at Purple Leaf provided outstanding customer service and remained in contact throughout the process. ... show more

After doing all sorts of searching for shade options for our pool here in North TX, I'm glad I spent the extra money on the 10x10 Cantilever Umbrella from Purple Leaf. Yes, it isn't the cheapest but you absolutely get what you pay for with this one! It is very well put together and while I likely could've installed it myself, having an extra set of hands to slot the umbrella into the base is definitely what I would recommend. Unlike other reviewers, everything showed up with the umbrella as expected - so all of the tools, screws, covers, and instructions came in the box. I also received the product fairly quickly - in less than a week's time for both the umbrella and the base (highly recommend spending the extra $ on the base with wheels - makes it so much easier to move and maneuver!). The one button handle makes raising and lowering the umbrella super simple and the provided crank makes rotating the umbrella to right the right angle a breeze too. In our case, it provides a solid area of shade during both the morning and afternoon sun that hits out pool. Given how our pool is setup, having multiple umbrellas wouldn't work but the large shade spots created throughout the day make a huge difference temp wise when we get into the pool. In terms of how it responds to the wind, we get plenty of it in the backyard but the umbrella design handles it with ease. A recent pop-up storm warning that indicated wind gusts of over 30mph made me lower the umbrella and secure it via the velcro straps just to be on the safe side, but it seems to handle double digit gusts (<20mph) pretty well. Funny enough, turns out my neighbor across the street purchased the same umbrella for his backyard last year and it still looks great! All in all, I'm incredibly happy with this purchase and with the color we picked which matched our pool setup pretty well. Highly recommend it as it will be money well spent! ... show more

I purchased this umbrella and the heavy duty stand three years ago. I am so impressed by the quality. We live on a barrier island on the gulf coast of Florida and generally leave it up almost all the time -- the only exceptions are very high winds and storms/hurricanes. It has held up amazingly to intense Florida heat, many unexpected high gusts of wind, monsoon rain, etc. The opening and closing mechanisms work easily and beautifully even after three years! I am also impressed that the turquoise blue canvas has very minimal fading (the photo that I have posted was taken today!) I also must commend the company on their customer service! We just recently lost a nut on our umbrella's extension arm. I contacted Purple Leaf customer service, sent them a picture of the part that we needed, and they sent us a new part, which fixed the problem immediately. My personal thanks to Tears, the customer service rep who assisted me. Tears was very professional and thorough in getting me the right part!!!
