Furst I connected the unit incorrectly to a 12v battery that was wired for 24v that produced an immediate noise that sounded like turbine engines starting then there were two loud pops, and alit of white mist came out of the unit, I figured the unit was dead, but surprisingly, replacing the two fuses allowed the unit to function correctly when connected to just a 12v battery. Later I connected the unit to a 12v battery incorrectly by connecting positive on negative and mmbegative on positive, that produced a huge spark and the unit is dead, but that unit was probably a pretty good unit before I killed it, so I'll give 5 stars. ... show more

    • Versatile, simple case style. Works fine at it's rated output.

I chose this unit because of the simple smooth case design, and the informative display. The display shows power output in watts, and shows input and output voltages. I mounted it in a motorhome and was able to cover the case with wood grain vinyl that matches the motorhome trim. The LCD display can be snapped out of the panel and inverted, if it's makes viewing easier. I applied the rated maximum load and the inverter produced the needed output. I lowered this one star because, even though the fan runs only at higher outputs, it is not variable speed and is a bit noisy. Also, the power LED is way, way too bright for using in a dark room, and is unnecessary since the LCD has a blue backlight. I relocated the green LED way back into the case to make it dimmer. This was clearly the best choice for me among similar sized inverters. ... show more

This inverter is a great value, it's actually pure size wave! It puts out 120v 60hz power, at idle with no load it uses .37 amps. I put a 400 watt load (inductive heater) connected to a fully charged group 31 AGM, the display showed 400 watts being pulled but doing the math it was pulling approximately 475 watts from the battery (that makes sense with the conversion efficiency loss). I will say the voltage display on the unit itself is always 0.2v off from actual under load. Overall the unit stayed quiet under light use (putting 400 watts on it did cause the fans to kick on continuously). I can't complain for the price, personally I will be making some thicker gauge battery leads for it since the ones it came with seem a bit thin for the 50-60 amps this inverter could theoretically pull which might be causing a voltage drop. (I took it camping for 3 days and it did great power my laptop/portable fridge and phone, even at around 100 watts of load I couldn't hear the fan and the unit itself stayed cool to the touch) (Packaging includes the inverter, alligator wires, and 12v power socket (limited to 120 watts in this form) ... show more

    • Packaging or lack thereof is the worst I've every seen.

I bought the 500w and from the label it appears they use the same box for all their units up to the 800w. The inside cushioning is for the 800w so this smaller 500w is basically loose flopping around in the box. I wouldn't be surprised if many don't work out of the box . Very disappointed. There is a smell that irritated my lungs a bit, hopefully it goes away. I returned a different Chinese brand that also had poor packaging and smelled very strongly like a can of spray paint, this is due to a capacitor or a battery leaking. Hopefully this is not the early signs of that. The fan is very noisy, sounds like a blow dryer in low mode, it comes on around 100w of use on a warm day in my van and blowing that smell around, giving me a headache. It seems to go on full blast for 30 seconds, then stops ever few minutes or so which is annoying. Not variable speed based on temp. And it's blowing the fumes of whatever it is, it's toxic as my lungs are irritated by it and gives me a headache. Just the past couple of hours of this smell is really making me consider returning it if it doesn't get better in a few days. The two outlets should be orientated 90 degrees or flipped 180 because the way it is now you cannot plug in power adapters into as it needs to hang down but there is no room to do that when it is mounted on the wall or floor. I don't don't use the battery clips, I'd rather have a cable with bother terminal connectors on both ends. Pros: - I like the manual power switch - I like the display for the AC and DC voltage, and wattage being used, also the LCD lighting is always on a little too bright imo. Should have a timer to turn off or something. - I like the fused being on the outside and accessible as some are inside. - I like that is came with a cig adapter ... show more

    • Great 400 w inverter for my chest freezer

This little 400 watt inverter is excellent. I was testing a different brand (a 1000 watt inverter) to run my 8.8 cubic foot chest freezer. The freezer uses 220 kw per year so I was expecting the freezer to be pulling somewhere around 60 watts. I have a decent battery app that was reading the freezer using approximately 90 watts with the thousand watt inverter. I bought this bad little boy and now it's reading exactly in the area I expected with an average of 58 Watts. When the inverter is idling the draw is so little it don't even show up on my battery monitor. That is very good news for this little inverter and very bad news for the thousand watt inverter. The fan came on when I first turned the inverter on and hasn't come back on since running this little bit of wattage. I highly recommend this 400 watt inverter. I can't tell you how long it's going to work but you can't tell how long any of them will work until they don't. Yeah for under 60 watts an hour I can run an 8.8 cubic foot chest freezer. Sense the freezer is not continuously running I should get some pretty good mileage out of my 200 Ah lithium battery. I definitely will be getting another one of these for backup. ... show more
