    • A beginner metal detector
Back in the 90’s I had a friend who lost a class ring in the snow. To help him out, I bought a metal detector with my hard earned cash from my part time high school job and we spent hours waving the thing around until we found the ring. I used it for a while in the spring and found some loose change in a park then ended up selling it to a classmate for less than I bought it for. I always kind of regretted that. That is the extent of my metal detecting experience, but I’ve always found metal detecting a fascinating hobby as a result. In the box you get the metal detector in several parts, a pair of headphones, a collapsible probe/shovel with case, a nylon bag to hold it and a small instruction booklet. Assembly is fairly straight forward with the instructions doing a fairly good job of leading you through the process. The detector operates using two 9 volt batteries in the screen. The instruction manual give the basics of how to operate the detector on a basic level. The instructions are written in competent English and should be enough to get a novice started, though I will say that a helpful option is to look up metal detecting on a popular video site for more in depth guidance on technique and practical methods of being more effective. It has a lot of basic features found on metal detectors but is not as refined as a higher end model would be. It has three tones for different grade metals, a pinpoint mode that only uses one tone (unlike the sliding tone higher end models will have), several settings for different levels of sensitivity, a very basic signal meter and a toggable backlit screen. After playing with this detector this spring, I can say that it does work to become somewhat effective with it. It does seem better than I would have expected for a detector at this price point. Maybe the technology has gotten more refined since the 90’s. In the case of the screen and options available, it’s a step up from what I remember using all those years ago. Bottom Line: It definitely will take practice to get to the point of being effective with it and it’s not as sensitive as a serious user would like, but for a novice or a kid just getting started, it should be a great way to dip your toe in. ... show more
